But thisnote is impossible, because this prophetic reading is not on a matter of repentance, and one must say the second of the two of repentance, as we said. And this is written in the order of Rabbeinu Tam, and I also heard it is the custom in France and Provence. And Rabbeinu Saadia wrote that on the sabbath between Rosh haShanah and Yom Kippur one must conclude with Isaiah 55:6-56:8.

And the Midrash punningly says that they established to say at the beginning of the prophetic readings of consolation "Comfort, comfort my people" (Isaiah 40:1) — that is to say, the Holy Blessed One said to the prophets, "Comfort, comfort my people!" Upon this the congregation of Israel responds, "But Zion says, 'the LORD has abandoned me!'" (Isaiah 49:14) that is to say, "I cannot be reconciled to the comfort of the prophets." And it says "Rise, rise, dress in strength, arm of the LORD; rise as days of old!" (Isaiah 51:9). And in places where it they conclude in place of this prophetic reading "Unhappy, storm-tossed" (Isaiah 54:11), it is as if to say the prophets respond and say before the Holy Blessed One, "Lo, the congregation of Israel is not reconciled to our comforting!" Upon this the Holy Blessed One responds and says, "I, I myself will comfort you" (Isaiah 51:12), and what's more, "Rejoice, barren one without children" (Isaiah 54:1), and what's more, "Rise, shine, for your light has come!" (Isaiah 60:1). To this, the congregation of Israel responds, "I will rejoice, rejoicing in the LORD" (Isaiah 61:10), that is to say, now I have something to rejoice and celebrate! "My soul will cheer in my God, who clad me in clothing of salvation" etc.

Rabbeinu Saadia wrote: a sabbath where there is mourning for a sage, conclude with the portion of I Samuel 4:1–22. And I found written in a responsa asked to the rabbi Shmuel ben Gershon, and this was his word and what was told to you, that when the Rambam of blessed memory passed away, when the congregation was gathered to the synagogue, they read the blessings and curses, and concluded prophetically with "Moses My servant is dead" (Joshua 1:2). Thus we have also heard, that Abba Mari of blessed memory wrote in his laws of mourning: when Rabbeinu Sherira, the father of Rabbeinu Hai, died, they read that Sabbath the portion of Numbers 27:15–23, and concluded with I Kings 2:1–21, but in place of the verse "And Solomon sat on the throne of David his father" they read "and Hai sat on the throne of Sherira his father, and his reign was greatly established."

And when a festival falls on the sabbath day, they read according to the matter of the festival and not per the order of the sabbath, and so too they read a prophetic reading of the festival. Nevertheless, one does not read in the afternoon of the sabbath prior or the Monday and Thursday prior the beginning of the portion for the festival, but rather the beginning of the portion for the sabbath, and they will return to the start of that portion on the week after the festival, after reading it the week before the festival. Thus it can so occur that they read the opening of *VaYhi BaYom HaShmini* seven times, and this is when Passover falls on the sabbath, so they read the beginning of the portion in the afternoon of the sabbath prior, and Monday and Thursday before Passover, and the afternoon of the sabbath of the first day of the festival, and the afternoon of the sabbath of the last day of the festival, and Monday and Thursday afterwards. And so too it can occur that they read the opening of *V-Zot HaBrakha* four times, and this is when Sukkot falls on the sbabbath, so they read the beginning of the portion the afternoon of that the sabbath and the Thursday before Sukkot (since they wouldn't read it on Monday since it is Yom Kippur) and they read it on the afternoon of the sabbath of the first day of the festival, and the afternoon of the sabbath of the last day of the festival, since Simḥat Torah is the first day after that.

לעולם קורין בשנה פשוטה פקדו ופסחו, פי' צו את אהרן בשבת שלפני הפסח, מנו ועצרו, פי' במדבר סיני שיש בו מנין ישראל בשבת שלפני עצרת, צומו וצלו, פי' שבת שלפני תשעה באב קורין ואתחנן ומתרגמי' וצליתי, קומו ותקעו, פי' אתם נצבים בשבת שלפני ראש השנה. ובמעובר' במקום פקדו ופסחו קורין סגירו ופסחו, פי' זאת תהיה תורת המצורע בשבת שלפני הפסח. וכדי שיקראו אלו הפרשיות בעונתן תקנו לקרות בשבת אחד שני סדרים כמו שכתבנו למעלה. וטעם פקדו ופסחו מפני שבצו את אהרן מדבר מהלכו' הגעלת כלים וצריך להזהיר עליהם קודם הפסח שנא' וכל כלי חרש אשר תבושל בו ישבר ואם בכלי נחשת בושלה וגו' ואמרי' בזבחים בפרק דם חטאת שאנו צריכין לעשות מריקה בחמין ושטיפה בצונן בכלים שנשתמשו בהן הקדשים להכשירם מדין נותר כמו שאמ' הכתו' בגיעולי גוים כל דבר אשר יבא באש תעבירו באש וכו' והגעלת כלים הנבלעים מאיסור החמץ אנו למדין גם כן מגיעולי גוים. וגם במעוברת שקורין סגרו ופסחו מדבר בפרשת זאת תהיה בענין טהרת כלים שנא' וכלי חרס אשר יגע בו הזב ישבר וגו' שהוא כעין הגעלת כלים. מנו ועצרו כדאמרינן במגלה בפרק בני העיר תניא ר' שמעון בן אלעזר אומ' עזרא תקן להם לישראל שיהו קורין קללות שבתורת כהנים קודם עצרת כדי שתכלה שנה וקללותיה שעצרת ראש השנה לאילן הוא דתנן ובעצרת על פירות האילן. ונהגו לקרות גם פרשת במדבר סיני קודם עצרת כדי להפסיק בפרש' אחת בין קללות לעצרת כמו שאמרנו למעלה. צומו וצלו מפני שכתו' בפרש' ואתחנן כי תוליד בנים ובני בנים וגו' העידותי בכם היום וגו' ומפרש בשלהי גטין שרמז להם שיגלו ממנה לסוף תתנ"ב שנה כמנין ונושנתם והוא הקדים והגלם לסוף תת"נ כדי שלא יתקיים בהם כי אבוד תאבדון וזש"ה וישקוד ה' על הרעה ויביאה וגו' צדקה עשה הב"ה עם ישראל שמיהר להביאה שתי שנים לפני זמנה. קומו ותקעו כדי שתכלה שנה וקללותיה קודם ר"ה ונהגו לקרות גם פרש' אתם נצבים קודם ראש השנה כדי להפסיק בפרש' אחת בין קללות לראש השנה כמו שאמרנו למעלה.

וכל העולה לקרות בתורה פותח בדבר טוב ומסיים בדבר טוב חוץ מפרשת האזינו דאמרינן בפרק הקורא את המגלה עומד שמתחילין סימן הזי"ו לך שקורא הראשון מן האזינו עד זכור ימות עולם והשני מן זכור ימות עלם עד ירכיבהו והשלישי מן ירכיבהו עד וירא ה' וינאץ והרביעי מן וירא ה' עד לו חכמו והחמישי מן לו חכמו עד כי אשא אל שמים ידי והששי מן כי אשא עד סוף השירה. והטעם שפוסקין בענינות אלו מפני שהיא תוכחה כדי שיחזרו העם בתשובה. והטעם שנתנו חכמים סימן להפסקות פרשה זו יותר משאר פרשיות התורה כדי שלא יתקוטטו עם שליח צבור העולים לקרות בעבורם מפני שהם הפסקות רעות.

ונהגו שלא להפסיק בקריאת שירת הים ועשרת הדברות וקללות שבתורת כהנים ושבמשנה תורה אלא אחד קורא אותם. ואע"ג דאמרינן במגלה בפרק בני העיר אין מפסיקין בקללות ומפרש שם אמר אביי לא שנו אלא קללות שבתורת כהנים אבל שבמשנה תורה פוסק מאי טעמא אמר אביי הללו בלשון רבים אמורות ומשה מפי הגבורא אמרן והללו בלשון יחיד אמורות ומשה מפי עצמו אמרן אעפ"כ נהגו שלא להפסיק בשניהן. ויש סמך למנהגנו מדאמרינן בירושלמי דמגלה בפרק בני העיר אין לך טעון ברכה לפניו ולאחריו אלא שירת הים ועשרת הדברות וקללות שבתורת כהנים וקללות שבמשנה תורה. והכי איתא במסכת סופרים.

וגרסינן בפרקא קמא דבבא בתרא ובמנחות בפר' הקומץ רבה אמר ר' יהושע בר אבא אמר רב גדל אמר רב שמנה פסוקים אחרונים שבתורה יחיד קורא אותם בבית הכנסת דלר' יהודה יהושע כתבן ולר' שמעון בן יוחאי משה כתבן בדמע ואליבא דתרויהו הואיל ונשתנו משאר תורה נשתנו לקרותן יחיד. וכתב הר"מ במז"ל יחיד קורא אותם בבית הכנסת ואין צריך עשרה. והשיג עליו הראב"ד וזה לשונו א"א לא ראינו מעולם מי שאמר זה ומה שאמרו יחיד קורא אינו אלא שלא יפסיק בהן והכי איתא בירושלמי דמגלה ונהגו העולם שהעולה הוא קורא והחזן שותק ומה שכת' ענין זרות מאד והצבור היכן הלכו עכ"ד. וכן פר"ת יחיד קורא אותם שלא יפסיק בהם לקרות זה ארבעה פסוקים וזה ארבעה פסוקים והכי איתא בסוף מימרא דירוש' שהבאנו למעלה ר' יוסי בר' בון בשם רב תמניא פסוקים אחוראין שבמשנה תורה טעונין ברכה לפניהם ולאחריהם פי' מפני שאין מפסיקין בהם אלא יחיד קורא אותם והכי איתא במסכת סופרים.
