**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**After eating the *matzah***, one takes some of the *chazeret*, (a type of) *maror,* and dips it in the *charoset*,¹⁹⁴, 8:8 and recites, “To eat the *maror*.” One should not leave bitter herbs in the *charoset* too long since it will negate the taste of the *maror*. One should eat an olive's amount along with the others who are eating without leaning since it is not a symbol of freedom but a reminiscence of subjugation, as Scripture states, “They embittered their lives.” Therefore, one does not eat it in the manner of freedom.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**After eating the *maror,*** one takes the third piece of *matzah* and makes a sandwich-wrap with the *hazeret* and eats it. The *Rambam* OB”M writes that one dips it in *charoset.*¹⁹⁵ One eats an olive’s amount while leaning along with all the other participants as a reminder of the Temple according to the custom of Hillel who did so in the Holy Temple. One does not recite a blessing when eating it. The *Rosh* also writes that one dips it in *charoset* since this is what Hillel did when he ate *matzah* and *maror.* The author of the *Ittur* writes, There are those who dip (the sandwich) in the *charoset* but our custom is that one eats the *matzah* and *maror as* Hillel without dipping in the *charoset* since the poison is killed by the first dipping and there are those that say that the *matzah* kills it. Rav Amram also writes that one does not dip the *matzah* and *maror* sandwich-wrap in *charoset.* Ibn Yarchi was surprised about this and said, “Did Hillel really not dip in *charoset*, as a reminder of the mortar!¹⁹⁶ Author Abraham ben Natan - was born in the second half of the 12th century, probably at Lunel, Languedoc, where he also received his education. **Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
Why do we eat *matzah* and bitter herbs as a sandwich-wrap? It is taught in *Pesaḥim*, ch. 10 (*Arvei Pesaḥim*): “They said that Hillel would wrap *matzah* and *maror* together and eat them, as it is stated: “They shall eat it with *matzot* and bitter herbs.” (Nu. 9:11) Rabbi Yoḥanan said: Hillel’s colleagues disagreed with him, as it is taught: I might have thought that one should wrap *matzot* and bitter herbs together and eat them in the manner that Hillel eats them; therefore the verse states: “They shall eat it with *matzot* and bitter herbs,” meaning even this, the *matza*, by itself, and that, the bitter herbs, by themselves. ”¹⁹⁷ Now, we say the law is neither like Hillel or the sages. Rather we do it (eat them together) as a reminder of the Temple, and we also eat them by themselves so that the *maror* (which is rabbinic) does not negate the taste of the *matzah* which is a *Torah* commandment. Therefore, we recite the blessing for *matzah* first and eat an olive’s amount of it, and then we recite the blessing over the *maror* and eat an olive’s amount of it and then we eat the two of them together without a blessing since we have already filled out belly with them and one does not have to recite another blessing. The *Sefer Aruch* states in the time when the Temple was still standing Hillel used to recite the *matzah* blessing for eating *matzah* and the *maror* blessing for eating bitter herbs and then they would make a sandwich-wrap of *matzah* and *maror* together since they both were from the *Torah*, one could not negate the other. But in this time when *matzah* is a *Torah* command, as is stated, “You shall eat it, *matzah and bitter herbs” -* in a time when there is a *Pesaḥ,* we do so; in a time when there is no *Pesaḥ*, there is no obligation to eat them together since the rabbinic command would come to abrogate the *Torah* command*.* Rather we eat each one separately and afterwards we eat them together in remembrance of the Temple. Since we have already recited a blessing over the *matzah* and over bitter herbs, eating it is only a general remembrance and we do not recite a blessing on it.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**Ibn Yarchi writes** that one who wishes to perform the *mitzvah* of *korech* optimally, should not speak until he has made the sandwich-wrap like Hillel so that the blessings of *matzah* and the *maror* include the *korech*. For it is stated we do not perform the *mitzvah* like one or the other but strictly like both of them. Here too, regarding the blessing we need to do it for each of them, and one must be wary of common conversation interrupting the blessings.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
Afterwards one can continue their meal and eat whatever they want. Afterwards one eats an olive’s amount of the *matzah* that is wrapped in a cloth for the *Afikomen*, as a reminder of the *Pesaḥ* offering which was eaten when a person was already satiated. One should taste nothing after the *Afikomen* so that it marks the conclusion of one’s meal and the taste of *matzah* remains in one’s mouth. One must eat the *Afikomen matzah* before the mid-hour of the night and if one doesn’t do so one has not fulfilled one obligation for the Pesaḥ which can only be eaten until the mid-hour of the night.

(Wikipedia) wrote in the name of his father, since there are three matzot that are named, “the *matzot*” it is good to perform a *mitzvah* with each of them. How so? **If one only has three matzot for the two nights** Ibn Yarchi writes that this should be enough for them. How so? When one recites the *HaMotzi* blessing and *Le’ekhol matzah*, one should break part of the broken piece only and eat from it. One should make the sandwich-wrap from this broken piece and not touch the whole *matzot* at all that remains. Then one can make the Second night Seder with them just like this first Seder.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**Between the (first)** if one wishes to drink, one may drink. Between the third and fourth (cups) one may not drink.¹⁹⁹ 117b In the Jer. Talmud says, “Why? So that he should not become drunk and forget to finish *Hallel.* The question is asked, “Isn’t he already drunk?” ***Peirush***: Since one could drink as much as one wanted during the meal. It answers, “wine during a meal does not cause drunkenness; wine after the meal causes drunkenness.”²⁰⁰ 10:6, although the *Talmud* states all of this somewhat differently. The *Halachot Gedolot*,²⁰¹ (lit. great halachot) is a work on Jewish law dating from the Geonic period. It exists in several different recensions, and there are sharply divergent views on its authorship, though the dominant opinion attributes it to Simeon Kayyara. Rif, and the Rambam OB”M write that it is forbidden to drink after the *Afikomen* except for the two cups of wine, the one that is prefaced by the blessing (after the meal) and the one that follows *Hallel*. This is the custom of the people in order that he not become focused on the wine and be like a person who eats the Pesaḥ offering with two gatherings, and also so that one does not appear like one who adds extra cups of wine. The Ri offers another reason for this custom - since one is obligated to spend the whole night (conversing) about the laws of Passover and the Exodus from Egypt, and recalling all the miracles which the Holy One performed for our ancestors until sleep overcomes them. If they drink, they might become inebriated. We read this in the Tosefta: “A person is obligated to be involved with the laws of Pesaḥ the whole night,”²⁰² and we learn “The story of Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Joshua who sat together in B’nai Brak and told the story of the Exodus all that night…” But if one wishes to have a fifth cup of wine, they are permitted since there is support for this from the verse, “I will bring you…” (Ex. 6:8) If one wishes to drink water, one may do so.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**If one forgot to eat the** *Afikomen matzah* until after one washed hands in order to recite the *Birkat HaMazon* or if one already said, ***hav lan v’navrikh***,²⁰³ version of the *Mizuman* or the *Zimun*, or the introduction to the *Birkat HaMazon*, when there are three or more men eating together for traditional Jews. Ashkenazi Jews begin *Rabbotai Niva rekh…*. “Let us bless…” or one has already recited the *Birkat HaMazon* but before the blessing over the wine, the *Avi Ezri*²⁰⁴ he was prominent amongst the Tosafists of the middle-ages, and the *Rosh* write, one should wash one’s hands again and recite the *Motzi* and eat it. But if one didn’t remember until after the blessing over the wine, one should not eat the *Afikomen* since one must recite the *Birkat HaMazon* and recite the blessing over the wine again and it would appear as if one were adding a fifth cup of wine. Further, we have established that one does not drink wine between the third and fourth cups. We can say that it is fitting to rely on our *matzot* which are all ‘guarded’ from the time of kneading and the last *matzah* that one ate can be assumed to be in place of the *Afikomen*. If one raises an objection (and says) maybe *matzah* was not the last thing one ate - rather one ate fruit or sweets - this does not prevent it since we only say *Ayn Maftirin l’achar haPesaḥ Afikomen*, (One may not conclude the *Pesaḥ* offering with an *Afikoman*). But they did not say if one ate food after making the *Pesaḥ* offering one should make a second *Pesaḥ* offering, since the *Afikomen* is only a remembrance of it. Rabbeinu Peretz writes, even though one has already said *Hav lan v’navrikh*, one is still able to eat the *Afikomen* without reciting the blessing, even though (saying the *Zimun*) is usually considered to mark the end of the meal. This is so since the *Afikomen* is a commandment which the All-Merciful decreed upon us; that is to say we depend upon the table of the All-Merciful One.

From this we learn that it is optimal to seek out at least three to recite *Hallel* so that one might recite *Hodu* to the other two. The *Rosh* writes that if it is impossible to find three then it is enough to recite it with his wife and minor son.²⁰⁵ 113:3 Since the person chants הַלְלוּיָהּ הַלְלוּ it implies that one person is calling on two or more to sing praises to God.

**The reason for the custom** of beginning with “Pour out Your wrath upon the nation who do not know you,” (Jer. 10:25) is that there are four cups of wine for the four the cups of retribution which the Holy One is going to mete out to the nations of the world, as we said above. So writes Rabbi Yitzchak ben Giat. But Rabbi Chaim Kohen writes that one does not need to conclude *Hallel* with a blessing since it is enough (that one did so) with the concluding words of *Yishtabach.* Why have a concluding blessing twice on the same matter? *Rabbeinu* Saadia Gaon also writes this in his order of prayers.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**Regarding the (concluding) blessing,** “On the wine and the fruit of the vine:” There are those from the *Gaonim* who say that one must recite the blessing “On the wine and the fruit of the vine” after each cup. *Rabbeinu* Hai *Gaon* writes we have not seen anyone recite “On the wine” (on each cup) except after all the cups since they drank them all in one place and one has not changed one’s mind (about drinking more) so that after the final cup is sufficient. The *Rif* writes one recites the blessing “After the wine and the fruit of the vine” after the first two cups and after the second two cups. The author of *Sefer Hashalama*²⁰⁷, designed to complete the *halakhot* of Isaac *Alfasi, explaining its difficult passages, (JE) writes it makes sense that the *Rif* is of the opinion that wine before the meal does not exempt wine within the meal because one is for drinking and the other is for soaking.²⁰⁸ Similarly wine within the meal does not negate wine after the meal because one is for soaking and the other for drinking. Have I not received from my father and teacher that wine within the meal does not negate wine after the meal for this is for drinking, and it is better to drink than to drink for the purpose of ingesting. The *Ra’avad* also writes this in *Berachot.* Therefore we do not recite the blessing “For the wine and the fruit of the vine,” until the end of all of the cups. And this is the general custom.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
**The Rif writes:** One who wishes to recite a blessing in two or three houses, how does one do so? First one recites the blessings in one’s own home and one eats all that one wants. Then one recites the *Birkat HaMazon.* Afterwards one may recite the blessing in each house and drink the cup of *Kiddush,* and the *Haggadah;* one eats the greens and *matzah* but one should not eat other things with them. One leaves them to finish his meal and recite the blessing after the meal. Then he may go back to the last house and do the same, and so on from house to house. Even though these are “blessings of enjoyment” (*birchat nehenin*), and we have established that one cannot recite a “blessing of enjoyment” for others unless one participates in the meal with them, the blessing over the *matzah* and *kiddush* are different on this day because they are an obligation. Therefore, one may recite the blessing even though one doesn’t benefit (from the object of the blessing). One must have the intention that one is not reciting the *Birkat HaMazon* to taste the food with them for one (knows) that one can not eat anything after the *Afikomen*. In the end one returns home, finishes *Hallel* and drinks the cup of *Hallel*. If one wishes first to go to the houses of others, recite the blessings without eating or tasting anything with them, and then one can return to one’s house to recite the *Kiddush*, the permission is in one’s hands, and it is alright. End of quote. If one desires, one can complete the entire Seder in one’s home and afterwards go to the houses of others to recite Kiddush without eating or drinking, then the permission is in one's hands. One should not start the Seder at home, recite the *Haggadah* through "*Ga’al Yisrael,*" say the blessings over the *matzah*, and then visit other homes before returning to finish the meal. This is because one should not interrupt one’s meal to go elsewhere, even if one leaves someone elderly or ill behind. However, if one goes out to perform a *mitzvah,* such as receiving a bride or groom, one is allowed to leave. Helping others who are not familiar with the *Seder* is important, but the *mitzvah* of greeting a bride and groom is a rare opportunity, so it takes priority. When assisting those who need help with the *Seder,* one should do so either before or after the meal, rather than interrupting it in the middle.²⁰⁹

footnotes:
²⁰⁹ Note that I owe this paragraph to AIChat. After translating it literally I found the sentences were too cumbersome - this is how AIChat suggested it be stated. Here is my original translation: One should not begin at home, recite the Haggadah to Ga’al Yisral, motzi and al achilat matzah, then go to the other homes, returning home to finish his meal. (This is because) one should not uproot oneself from one's meal to go to another place even if there is an old or ill there, but doing so in order to perform a mitzvah, one may do so, such as greeting a bride or a groom. It goes without saying that it is a mitzvah to help those who are not expert fulfill their obligation, but the commandment of greeting a bride and groom is a passing opportunity so that you are allowed to uproot oneself from the meal, while helping those who are not expert in fulfilling their obligation (at the Seder) one can go out either before the completion of the meal or after the meal.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
The author of the *Ittur*²¹⁰, *Ittur Soferim*. writes that it makes sense that one can not recite *Borei p’ri haAdama* on the other greens (*karpas*) since one (the visiting leader) does not taste them with him, but one can only say blessings over the *matzah*. One must act like Rav Hisda who recited *Borei p’ri ha’Adama* and *Le’echol haMaror*²¹¹ since *hazeret*, or romaine lettuce can be used for *maror*. Later when he fulfilled the mitzvah of maror, he no longer needed to repeat the blessing. on *Hazeret* (at *karpas* time) and ate it and then when he came to the *maror* he ate it without a blessing. The *Rosh* writes that this is not obvious (what the *Ittur* meant), since *karpas* is a rabbinic decree so that children will take a note of it, like *matzah*, a person can help others fulfill their obligation even though they are not tasting it (the karpas). The *Rif* writes that it is a decree that they should recite the *Birkat HaMazon* for themselves if they know how. But if they don’t know how, Rav Amram there is no decree that one should fulfill for if he does he cannot recite the blessing over the wine in his own house. The *Rosh* writes if they do not know (how to recite) the *Birkat HaMazon,* there is a decree that he should coach them word for word just as (we do) with a minor who recites *Hallel* and the adults repeat it after him, as we said there that this is not considered a blessing in vain. Rabbi Yitzchak Gi’yat also writes this.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan, 2023:**
Harav Yaakov ben Ha*Rosh* writes that it is possible that one may recite the *Birkat HaMazon* in order to help others fulfill their obligation for just as (one may recite) the blessing over *matzah* which is an obligation so too the *Birkat HaMazon* (is an obligation) since the sages decreed that we drink four cups of wine and they decreed that one of them should follow the *Birkat HaMazon,* making it an obligation*.* But this does not appear correct in my eyes and the proof is what is stated in the Jer. Talmud. Ch. 3, (*Perek Mi Sh’Meito*): “For every obligation that a man is exempt from, he may help the congregation to fulfill their obligation, except for Grace…But have we not taught: “Anybody who is not obligated may not help the congregation to fulfill their obligation?”²¹² 3:3 But, “You shall eat, be satisfied and bless,” If one ate on may recite the blessing. It is correct to follow the opinion of the *Rosh.*
