אמר הרה"ק ר' ישראל מרוזין ז"ל, רבים אומרים על הבעל שם טוב זצוקללה"ה כי לכן קראו אותו בעל שם טוב יען שימש בשמות הקדושים, אבל באמת לא כן הוא, הן הצדיק מושל ביראת ה', והקב"ה גוזר והצדיק מבטלה (מוע"ק דט"ז ע"ב, שבת דס"ג ע"א) ולכן קראו אותו בעל שם יען הוא ביטל כמה גזרות אשר נגזרו מאת השי"ת ב"ה כביכול על כל איש מישראל.

The holy rabbi of Ruzhin said, many people claim that the he was called the Baal Shem Tov because he used holy Names,¹⁰ but this is not the case. Rather, “The Tzaddik rules with the fear of G‑d” (II Samuel 23:3), for “G‑d decrees and the Tzaddik annuls.”¹¹ 16b. He was called the Baal Shem because he annulled many decrees issued by G‑d against all the Jews, as it were.¹²
