One should not begin any kind of creative work, nor should one eat, until one conducts this search for chametz. One is however permitted to eat a small snack, such as fruits or less than the volume of an egg's worth of bread. Even if one has a regular habit to study Torah at a specific time in the evening, they should not study until they have conducted the search.
