אין צביעה באוכלין; ולכן מותר לטבל פיתו במשקה הצבוע אפ על גב דהפת נצבע; וכן מותר ליתן באוכל דבר שצובע אם אין כוונתו לצבוע, אבל אם כוונתו לצבוע, אסור גם באוכלין, מאחר דכוונתו לצבוע. ואף על גב דאמרנו כל שאין כוונתו לצבוע אין איסור צביעה באוכלין, מכל מקום במים ושאר משקין צריך להיזהר, אע"פ שאין כוונתו לצבוע, משום דדמי לעושה עין הצבע, דאסור מן התורה לדעת הרמב"ם ז"ל, וכאשר כתבתי בזה בסה"ק "רב- פעלים" בס"ד. ולכן מה שנוהגים פה עירנו שמביאים על השולחן במסיבה גדולה שני כלים של זכוכית גדולים, וממלאים אותם מים צבועים כגוון של "קרמז" ליופי ונוי, שיהיו נראים כאלו הם מלאים שכר אדום - שלא יעשה צבע המים האלו בשבת. ואסור להניח "כחל" בעיניים בשבת, משום צובע.

There is no such thing as dying food; therefore it is permitted to dip your bread on something liquid which has a colour itself even if the bread gets coloured: and also it is permitted to give to put something that colours into food if there is no intention to colour it, but if there is an intention to colour it, it is also forbidden for the food itself, since one had the intention of dying it… and it is forbidden to put make-up on on the eyes on Shabbat, on account of colouring.
