**Sefaria Community Translation:**
"Our ancestors" — Meaning our teachers, who are called "fathers," as it says (2 Kings 2:12), "Elisha called out to Elijah, 'My father, my father,'" because he was his teacher. And in the Moed Katan 26, it says: "Father — this refers to one’s teacher who taught him wisdom."

###### Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:2
[Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Binyan%20Yehoshua%20on%20Avot%20D%27Rabbi%20Natan/r/5:2:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
"If they had known" — This refers to their careful consideration of their words, meaning that the intent of their ancestors was to teach that they served [God] without expecting a reward.

###### Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:3
[Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Binyan%20Yehoshua%20on%20Avot%20D%27Rabbi%20Natan/r/5:2:3)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
"They would not have said" — Their mistaken belief concerned the resurrection of the body. Since they heard that people should serve God out of love and that their reward would be doubled in the World to Come, they surely believed in reward and punishment. However, their erroneous view was that while the soul would receive its reward in Gan Eden with great delight, the body would return to dust and have no reward. They denied only the resurrection of the body, not the concept of reward. This is why they scrutinized the language, saying, "Is there a labourer who works all day and does not receive his wages?" — alluding to the physical body that toils all day, only for its efforts to be in vain. Therefore, they concluded, "If our ancestors had known" — meaning they did not believe that the physical body would return as it was to receive eternal reward, since it is made of dust and returns to dust.

[Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Binyan%20Yehoshua%20on%20Avot%20D%27Rabbi%20Natan/r/5:2:4)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
"And they would use" — This refers to Antigonus and his students, who were wealthy and would use silver and gold utensils. Nevertheless, their hearts were not arrogant because of this, as explained in the earlier teaching.

###### Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:5
[Binyan Yehoshua on Avot D'Rabbi Natan 5:2:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Binyan%20Yehoshua%20on%20Avot%20D%27Rabbi%20Natan/r/5:2:5)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
"That not" — And in some texts, it reads: "And their hearts were not arrogant about it." This is what Tzadok and Boethus would say: Even though the Pharisees use silver and gold vessels, they are not arrogant about it. Rather, it is a tradition in their hands, meaning a received teaching, and there is no reason for unnecessary suffering — that is, for the body, as mentioned above. See also Rashbam in Bava Batra 115b, who brings this teaching from Avot D'Rabbi Natan, and in Tosefot Yom Tov on Chapter 1, Mishnah 11.
