**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Laws of Honoring Father and Mother (Yoreh Deah 240):**
If one has a father or mother, he should endeavor to attend to their needs, for this is a positive commandment from the Torah and is the most stringent of stringent obligations (as stated in the Jerusalem Talmud at the beginning of Peah). A person must honor his father and mother and fear them, and one must be extremely careful in their honor and fear, for their honor and fear are compared to the honor and fear of the Omnipresent, blessed be He. For it is written "Honor the Lord with your wealth," and similarly it is written "Honor your father"; it is written "Fear the Lord your God," and similarly it is written "Each person shall fear his mother and father." There are three partners in a person: the Omnipresent, blessed be He, and his father and mother. Our Sages said: When a person honors his father and mother, the Holy One, blessed be He, says, "I account it as if I dwelled among them and they honored Me." And when one causes pain to his father and mother, the Holy One, blessed be He, says, "It is good that I did not dwell among them, for if I had dwelled among them, they would have caused Me pain." It is obvious that one must love them as his own body, for this is included in "Love your neighbor as yourself." But regarding one's father and mother, their love is compared to love of the Omnipresent, as stated in the Zohar Tetzei: Like a person who strives for his father and mother, loving them more than himself, his soul, spirit, breath, and all his possessions—he considers all of this as nothing when it comes to doing the will of his father and mother. Our Sages said that the entire commandment of "Honor" applies to the father, and [also] to the mother—it is repayment of a debt that the child owes to repay his father and mother for the goodness they bestowed upon him. One who does not honor them is called wicked, as it is written "The wicked borrows and does not repay." And if so, included in this repayment is that he should love them with intense love, just as they loved him, and they should not be a burden or load upon him. If a person does not honor his father and mother, harsh decrees come upon him, as it is written regarding honor of the Omnipresent "Because this people has drawn near with its mouth and honored Me with its lips, but its heart is far from Me...I will continue to astound [them]..." And since He equated their honor with honor of the Omnipresent, then the punishment is also equal. Therefore, just as one who curses God's name is [punished by] stoning, so too one who curses his father or mother is [punished by] stoning (see all this in the Tur and in Sefer Charedim regarding positive commandments dependent on the heart).

###### Chayyei Adam 67:2
[Chayyei Adam 67:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Let the mouths of those who speak falsehood be silenced—those who say they need not show gratitude to father and mother, for [their parents] intended only their own pleasure, and the child was born as a result. Since he was born from them, the Holy One Blessed Be He gave nature such that father and mother raise their children, like the nature of every beast, animal, and bird that raise their young, and the children do not show gratitude to their parents. Let them be muted and silenced and shamed, as it is written, "Let lying lips be muted" (Psalms 31:19), for they themselves testify about themselves that they are like animals, and God did not grant them a heart to know and understand. Concerning this the Sages said: "Whoever denies the kindness of his fellow will ultimately deny the kindness of the Holy One Blessed Be He"—for according to their words, they also need not honor and fear the Omnipresent, Blessed Be He. Since we are the work of His hands, it would be fitting [for Him] to be good to and show mercy on His handiwork. There is no doubt that those who say such things are deniers in their hearts.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:3
[Chayyei Adam 67:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:3)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Honor consists of three dimensions: thought, action, and speech. In thought, as it is written: "He despises a contemptible person, but honors those who fear the Lord" (Psalms 15:4). This means honoring in thought—for if one says that in his heart and eyes they are contemptible, but he honors them only with words, then they are equal in his eyes to himself, since he too is contemptible in his own eyes. Rather, it must mean that he honors them in his heart—that they are important in his eyes and heart. That is, he should imagine in his eyes that they are great and honorable people, even though in the eyes of other people they are not considered important at all. This is the essence of honor—for otherwise, it is written: "With their mouth and lips they honor Me, but their heart is far from Me" (Isaiah 29:13), as I wrote.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:4
[Chayyei Adam 67:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:4)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
In action, how is one obligated to honor them? With his body and with his wealth: to feed them, give them drink, clothe them, and attend to all their needs. As it states in the Mekhilta: "Honor your father" — I might think with words alone. Therefore it says, "Honor the Lord with your wealth" (Proverbs 3:9), thus equating their honor with the honor of the Omnipresent. Now we can conclude: feed them, give them drink, clothe them, bring them in and take them out. And whatever one gives them should be done with a cheerful countenance. For even if one feeds them fattened fowl every day but shows them a grim face, he is punished for it. And conversely, even if one makes them grind at a mill, yet his intention is for their benefit — to save his parents from something harder than this — and he speaks words of appeasement to their hearts, showing them that his intention is for their good and that he cannot provide for them in any other way, until they are appeased to grind, he inherits the World to Come. And one is obligated to serve them as a servant serves his master. (See Kiddushin 31b in Tosafot s.v. "Kabed" and s.v. "VeTordo")

###### Chayyei Adam 67:5
[Chayyei Adam 67:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:5)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Regarding speech: If one needs something in the city and knows that people will fulfill his request for his father's sake—even though he knows they would also do it for him personally—he should not say "Do such-and-such for me," but rather "Do it for my father," in order to attribute the honor to his father. If he is uncertain about the matter, he has permission to do as he wishes. However, if he knows that his father has enemies in the city, he should not make requests in his father's name, for this would only bring disgrace to his father, since they will not do it for him.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:6
[Chayyei Adam 67:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:6)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
One is obligated to honor him even after his death. If one relates a teaching heard from him, one says: "Thus said my father, my teacher—may I be atonement for his resting place." Similarly, when signing one's name, one signs as "the son of my master." All this applies specifically within twelve months; after twelve months, one says "of blessed memory." Likewise, the Kaddish prayers customarily recited are rooted in the obligation to honor father and mother, for one is obligated to honor them in death.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:7
[Chayyei Adam 67:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:7)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
One is obligated to stand before one's father and mother to their full height. It seems to me that the law is like that of one's primary teacher in section 242, meaning that once he sees them from as far as the eye can see until they are hidden from him or until they sit down, he is only obligated to stand morning and evening, except in the presence of others who do not know that he already stood before them. Some say that even a hundred times a day he is obligated. If they are in an upper story and the son is below on the ground floor, he need not stand before them since they are in a separate domain.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:8
[Chayyei Adam 67:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:8)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
What constitutes fear? He should not stand in the place designated for his father to stand in council with his colleagues to deliberate, because it appears that he considers himself among the counselors and equates himself with his father. He should not stand in the place designated for his father to pray there, nor sit in the place designated for him to sit in his house. Rather, he should stand before him as a servant before his master. He should not contradict his words. If his father disputes with another person, whether regarding a matter of law or other matters, it goes without saying that he should not say "so-and-so's words seem correct," for that contradicts his words, and all the more so he should not say "the truth is not as you say." Rather, even if his father's words seem correct to him, he should not say in his presence "my father's words seem correct," for this is a disgrace to his father as it shows that his opinion is more decisive than his father's opinion. But if he has a response to the disputant's words, he should respond to him—and this specifically in his presence. But not in his presence, it is permitted to say "my father's words seem correct to me," for on the contrary, this is honoring his father. Even to dispute with his father is permitted when not in his presence. However, if there is another who holds the same opinion as his father and he wishes to dispute his father's reasoning, since there is another, he should not mention his father's name but should say the opinion of that other person who holds like his father (Turei Zahav). He should not call him by his name, neither in his lifetime nor after his death, but rather says "my father, my teacher" and "my mother, my teacher." If his father's name was the same as another person's and it is an unusual name that people are not accustomed to, some permit [calling others by that name] when not in his presence. Similarly, if it is a name that many people are accustomed to, such as Abraham, Isaac, etc., and the like, some permit calling others by it even in his presence, and some forbid it in his presence. In any case, nowadays we are lenient about it, for presumably his father forgives.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:9
[Chayyei Adam 67:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Chayyei%20Adam/r/67:9)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
One whose father's or mother's mind has become disturbed should try to conduct himself with them according to their mental state until they receive mercy [from Heaven]. If it is impossible to endure this, he should go away and appoint others to care for them properly so that they not come to disgrace.

###### Chayyei Adam 67:10

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
If he saw his father transgress words of Torah, he should not say to him "Father, you have transgressed words of Torah." Rather, he should say to him "Father, thus and thus is written in the Torah," as if asking him, and not as if warning him, and he will understand on his own and not be embarrassed. If he said a teaching in error, he should not say to him "you erred," and even regarding a matter of law, he should not say to him "that does not work."

###### Chayyei Adam 67:11

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
How far does their fear and honor extend? If the son was dressed in precious garments and sitting at the head of the congregation, and his father and mother came and tore his garments, struck him on his head, and spit in his face—and likewise even if they took his purse of gold coins and threw it before him into the sea—he may not shame them, nor be distressed before them, nor become angry with them. Rather, he should be silent and fear the One who commanded thus. Nevertheless, he may sue them in court that they should pay him for what they damaged. Some say that before they caused him loss, the son may prevent them from causing him loss even though they have means to pay, in order not to go to the trouble of standing in court before a judge. Nevertheless, after they already caused him loss, it is forbidden to shame them, for what has happened has happened. If they do not have means to pay, everyone agrees it is permitted to prevent them from causing him loss, for he is not obligated to honor them except from their own means, as below in section 12. This specifically applies where there is actual monetary loss, but if they wish to remove from him mere profit, it is forbidden for everyone to prevent them and cause them distress. Moreover, even if his father and mother are sleeping and the keys to his son's shop are under their heads, it is forbidden to wake them from their sleep even though he will thereby lose much (Turei Zahav subsection 10). But if profit comes to his father and if he does not wake him he will be more distressed by the loss of profit, it is a commandment to wake him since his father is happy with this. Similarly, when waking him to go to the synagogue or for a matter of a commandment, for everyone is obligated in honoring the Omnipresent (Shulchan Aruch section 337).

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Feeding and giving them drink from their own resources if they have them. But if they do not have and the son does, we compel him to support them from his own as a form of charity. Therefore, even though we do not compel fulfillment of the commandment of honoring parents because it is a positive commandment whose reward is stated alongside it—"that your days may be lengthened"—which implies there is no reward in this world except the punishment of not lengthening one's days, nevertheless in this case we compel him, for one's father is no less than any other charity case, since we compel charity giving. It is forbidden to give charity to another poor person, as one's father takes precedence over everyone. If his means allow it and he supports his father from his own charity funds, a curse should come upon him for disgracing his father. If the son has nothing, he need not go begging door-to-door to feed them. However, some authorities hold that only when he has nothing at all need he not go begging to give to his father, but whatever he has he must give to his father even if he will need to go begging. For all agree he is obligated to honor and serve him in matters that do not involve giving his own money. If the son has that day's sustenance, even though this will cause him to neglect his work and tomorrow he will need to go begging, [he must serve his parents]. But if the son does not have that day's sustenance, he is not obligated to neglect his work and go begging or fast that day, and he need not even honor them with his body.

If his father tells him to violate words of Torah, whether a positive or negative commandment, even a rabbinic commandment, he should not listen to him, as it is written "Each person shall fear his mother and father—I am the Lord"—you are all obligated in My honor. Therefore, if they commanded him not to speak with so-and-so and not to forgive him, but the son wishes to make peace immediately, he need not be concerned with his father's instruction, as it is forbidden to hate any person unless one saw him committing a transgression.

If his father says "Give me water" and there is a transient mitzvah before him—if it is possible for the mitzvah to be performed by others, such as burial of the dead, accompanying [the deceased], and the like: if he already began that mitzvah he should complete it, as one engaged in a mitzvah is exempt from other mitzvot. If he has not begun it, he should leave the mitzvah and attend to their needs. If there are no others to do it and the time is passing, he should engage in the mitzvah and leave their honor. If the time for the mitzvah is not passing, he should attend to their honor and afterward perform the mitzvah.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Torah study is greater than honoring father and mother. Therefore, if the son wishes to go to another place to study where he trusts he will see a sign of blessing in his learning, and the father objects fearing he will come to improper conduct there, he need not listen to his father. Similarly, if the father objects to the son marrying a woman he desires, he need not listen to his father. One whose mother told him to do something and then his father came and said "Who told you to do that?" should not say "Mother," even if they curse him, lest his father become angry at his mother.

Honoring father takes precedence over mother in prioritization, since she is obligated to honor her husband. But if she is divorced, they are equal. There is never any distinction in any matter between father and mother.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Both man and woman are obligated in honoring and fearing father and mother, except that if the woman's husband objects she is exempt, but otherwise she is obligated. (It requires examination among the authorities: why is honoring one's father-in-law a Torah obligation? Why would she be exempt, since he too is obligated, as stated above that father precedes mother because she too is obligated to honor her husband?)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A mamzer is obligated to honor his father and mother and to fear them, and even if his father is wicked and a transgressor, he is obligated. Some say that as long as he has not repented, he is not obligated to honor him, but in any case it is forbidden to cause him distress.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Anyone who disgraces his father or mother, even with words, even by hint, is included in the curse from the Almighty, as it says "Cursed is one who degrades his father or mother." And regarding this, Solomon said through divine inspiration in Proverbs: "The eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother—the ravens of the valley will pluck it out." He said "obedience to [an aged] mother," meaning to teach that it is common for women's words to be foolish, and especially when she is old, her words are foolish. Therefore, even one who disgraces an aged mother—"obedience" refers to the gathering [of wrinkles], for due to old age wrinkles form in her flesh—even so, his punishment is severe. And it is written in Sefer HaChareidim: "There was an incident in our days of a man who supported his mother, but she was light and despised in his eyes because she had married another man after his father's death. This man traveled by sea and was killed and thrown into the sea. The Jews searched for him and found him on the seashore with one eye gouged out, pecked by the ravens."

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
It is forbidden for a person to make his yoke heavy upon his children and to be exacting with them regarding his honor, lest he bring them to stumbling. Rather, he should forgive and overlook them, for a father who forgives his honor—his honor is forgiven.

One who strikes his adult son: some say when he is twenty-two years old, and some say twenty-four years old. It seems to me that it all depends on the son's nature, and even younger than this, we excommunicate him, for he transgresses "before the blind [do not place a stumbling block]." Rather, he should rebuke him with words.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A person is obligated to honor his father's wife even though she is not his mother, as long as his father is alive, as it is written "Honor your father"—to include his father's wife. And likewise, he is obligated to honor his mother's husband as long as his mother is alive, as it is written "and your mother"—to include his mother's husband. But after death, he is not obligated in their honor, though it is proper to honor them. And the Sefer Mitzvot Katan writes that during their lifetime the obligation is from the Torah, and after death it is rabbinic.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A person is obligated to honor his older brother, whether he is his brother from his father or from his mother, as it is written "and your mother"—the extra vav [implies additional obligations]. And even if the younger one is greater in Torah than the older one [he must still honor him]. Nevertheless, it is forbidden for the older one to disgrace the younger one, since he is a Torah scholar, one must show respect for the Torah. But if he does not show respect for the Torah, he is not acting properly with him, and [the younger] is not obligated to honor him.

One who curses his father or mother, even after their death, is liable to stoning if there are witnesses and warning—whether male or female who cursed. If there was a thorn stuck in his father, he should not remove it lest he come to make a wound in him. Similarly, if he is a physician, he should not let his blood or amputate his limb even though he intends it for healing. When does this apply? When there is someone else who can do it. But if there is no one else and he is suffering, then he may let his blood and cut [as needed], according to what they permit him to do.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
In Tanna D'bei Eliyahu it states: "Honor your father" is juxtaposed to "You shall not commit adultery," to teach you that if a man marries a woman and she does not honor his father and mother, it is as if he commits adultery all his days. [It continues] to "You shall not steal"—that if a person has sons and daughters in his house and they do not honor their father and mother, it is as if he steals souls. (See Sefer HaChareidim from 561 to 585, and from sign 334 to 346.)
