## Daniel Chapter 11

###### Daniel 11:1

וַאֲנִי֙ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת אַחַ֔ת לְדָרְיָ֖וֶשׁ הַמָּדִ֑י עׇמְדִ֛י לְמַחֲזִ֥יק וּלְמָע֖וֹז לֽוֹ׃

As for me, in the first year of Daryavesh the Madian, I stood up to confirm and to strengthen him.

And I, [(Gabriel)] in the first year of Darius the Mede, stood up as a strengthener and a stronghold for him [(Michael)]. ###### Daniel 11:2

וְעַתָּ֕ה אֱמֶ֖ת אַגִּ֣יד לָ֑ךְ הִנֵּה־עוֹד֩ שְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה מְלָכִ֜ים עֹמְדִ֣ים לְפָרַ֗ס וְהָֽרְבִיעִי֙ יַעֲשִׁ֤יר עֹֽשֶׁר־גָּדוֹל֙ מִכֹּ֔ל וּכְחֶזְקָת֣וֹ בְעׇשְׁר֔וֹ יָעִ֣יר הַכֹּ֔ל אֵ֖ת מַלְכ֥וּת יָוָֽן׃

And now will I tell thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Paras: and the fourth shall be far richer than all of them: and when he has grown strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Yavan.

And now, I will tell you the truth. Behold, three more kings will arise for Paras [(Koresh, Achashverosh, and the Darius who built the Temple)], and the fourth [(the latter Darius, fourth in the succession of Madai)], will accumulate great wealth, more than all [the others], and, growing strong in his wealth, he will rouse all [his kingdom to war] with the kingdom of Yavan (Greece).


###### Daniel 11:3

וְעָמַ֖ד מֶ֣לֶךְ גִּבּ֑וֹר וּמָשַׁל֙ מִמְשָׁ֣ל רַ֔ב וְעָשָׂ֖ה כִּרְצוֹנֽוֹ׃

And a mighty king shall stand up, who shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.

And there will arise a strong king [(Alexander)], whose dominion will be great, and he will do as he desires [(with Darius, king of Paras. He will kill him and take his kingdom, and Paras will become subservient to Yavan)].


###### Daniel 11:4

וּכְעׇמְדוֹ֙ תִּשָּׁבֵ֣ר מַלְכוּת֔וֹ וְתֵחָ֕ץ לְאַרְבַּ֖ע רוּח֣וֹת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְלֹ֣א לְאַחֲרִית֗וֹ וְלֹ֤א כְמׇשְׁלוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָשָׁ֔ל כִּ֤י תִנָּתֵשׁ֙ מַלְכוּת֔וֹ וְלַאֲחֵרִ֖ים מִלְּבַד־אֵֽלֶּה׃

And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided towards the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion with which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, and go to others besides those.

And when he rises [i.e., at the height of his power], his kingdom will be broken, and it will be divided to the four ends of heaven, but not to his sons, and not in [the strength of] the reign wherein he reigned. For his kingdom will be uprooted [into four parts], and to others aside from these [four].


###### Daniel 11:5

וְיֶחֱזַ֥ק מֶֽלֶךְ־הַנֶּ֖גֶב וּמִן־שָׂרָ֑יו וְיֶחֱזַ֤ק עָלָיו֙ וּמָשָׁ֔ל מִמְשָׁ֥ל רַ֖ב מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃

And the king of the south shall be strong, but one of his princes shall be stronger than he, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.

And the king of the south will grow stronger [than the king of the north] and than his chiefs, and he will overpower him and rule. And he will exercise great sway in his dominion.

וּלְקֵ֤ץ שָׁנִים֙ יִתְחַבָּ֔רוּ וּבַ֣ת מֶֽלֶךְ־הַנֶּ֗גֶב תָּבוֹא֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת מֵישָׁרִ֑ים וְלֹֽא־תַעְצֹ֞ר כּ֣וֹחַ הַזְּר֗וֹעַ וְלֹ֤א יַעֲמֹד֙ וּזְרֹע֔וֹ וְתִנָּתֵ֨ן הִ֤יא וּמְבִיאֶ֙יהָ֙ וְהַיֹּ֣לְדָ֔הּ וּמַחֲזִקָ֖הּ בָּעִתִּֽים׃

And at the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of her arm; nor shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they who brought her, and he who begot her, and he who strengthened her in those times.

And after many years, they will unite, and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make peace [(between him and her father.)] And they [(her attendants)] will not be able to summon up strength [(to oppose him)]. Nor will he [(her father)] nor his warriors [(be able to oppose him)]. And she will be delivered — she, her attendants and her begetter [i.e., her father] and her supporter [i.e., her counselor] for the times [i.e., for contingencies].

וְעָמַ֛ד מִנֵּ֥צֶר שׇׁרָשֶׁ֖יהָ כַּנּ֑וֹ וְיָבֹ֣א אֶל־הַחַ֗יִל וְיָבֹא֙ בְּמָעוֹז֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן וְעָשָׂ֥ה בָהֶ֖ם וְהֶחֱזִֽיק׃

But from a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his place: he shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:

And there shall arise from the branch of her roots [a son] sitting on his [(her father's)] throne, and he shall come against the army [(of the king of the north)], and he will enter the stronghold of the king of the north, and he will succeed against them, and he will vanquish (them).


###### Daniel 11:8

וְגַ֣ם אֱֽלֹהֵיהֶ֡ם עִם־נְסִֽכֵיהֶם֩ עִם־כְּלֵ֨י חֶמְדָּתָ֜ם כֶּ֧סֶף וְזָהָ֛ב בַּשְּׁבִ֖י יָבִ֣א מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהוּא֙ שָׁנִ֣ים יַעֲמֹ֔ד מִמֶּ֖לֶךְ הַצָּפֽוֹן׃

and he shall also carry captives into Miżrayim their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall abstain for some years from attacking the king of the north.

And also their gods and their princes and their precious vessels of silver and gold will he bring in captivity to Egypt, and he will reign more years [in that kingdom] than did the king of the north.


###### Daniel 11:9

וּבָ֗א בְּמַלְכוּת֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֔גֶב וְשָׁ֖ב אֶל־אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃

But he shall come into the kingdom of the king of the south, and shall return to his own land.

And he will come through the kingdom of the king of the south [(her father's father)], and he will return to his land [(Egypt)].


###### Daniel 11:10

וּבָנָ֣ו יִתְגָּר֗וּ וְאָסְפוּ֙ הֲמוֹן֙ חֲיָלִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים וּבָ֥א ב֖וֹא וְשָׁטַ֣ף וְעָבָ֑ר וְיָשֹׁ֥ב (ויתגרו) [וְיִתְגָּרֶ֖ה] עַד־מָעֻזֹּֽה׃

But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.

And his [(the northern king's)] son will rise up and gather a multitude of great armies and he will come sweeping through [to the land of the south], and he will penetrate until his [(the southern king's)] stronghold.


###### Daniel 11:11

וְיִתְמַרְמַר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֔גֶב וְיָצָ֕א וְנִלְחַ֥ם עִמּ֖וֹ עִם־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֑וֹן וְהֶעֱמִיד֙ הָמ֣וֹן רָ֔ב וְנִתַּ֥ן הֶהָמ֖וֹן בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

And the king of the south shall be moved with anger, and shall come out and fight with him, with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.

And the king of the south will be embittered, and he will go out and war with him, with the king of the north, and he will mass a great multitude against him, and the multitude will be delivered into his [(the southern king's)] hand.


###### Daniel 11:12

וְנִשָּׂ֥א הֶהָמ֖וֹן (ירום) [וְרָ֣ם] לְבָב֑וֹ וְהִפִּ֥יל רִבֹּא֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א יָעֽוֹז׃

And when he has taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down tens of thousands: but he shall not prevail.

And the northern multitude will rouse themselves in pride of heart and overthrow tens of thousands [of the southern king's army], but [still] they will not prevail.


###### Daniel 11:13

וְשָׁב֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן וְהֶעֱמִ֣יד הָמ֔וֹן רַ֖ב מִן־הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן וּלְקֵ֨ץ הָֽעִתִּ֤ים שָׁנִים֙ יָ֣בוֹא ב֔וֹא בְּחַ֥יִל גָּד֖וֹל וּבִרְכ֥וּשׁ רָֽב׃

For the king of the north shall again set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with abundant supplies.

And the king of the north shall return and mass a multitude greater than the first, and after many years, he will come with a vast army, heavily supplied.


###### Daniel 11:14

וּבָעִתִּ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם רַבִּ֥ים יַֽעַמְד֖וּ עַל־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֑גֶב וּבְנֵ֣י**׀** פָּרִיצֵ֣י עַמְּךָ֗ יִֽנַּשְּׂא֛וּ לְהַעֲמִ֥יד חָז֖וֹן וְנִכְשָֽׁלוּ׃

And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the renegades of thy people shall exalt themselves to fulfil the vision; but they shall stumble.

And in those times, many will rise up against the king of the south, and the sons of the rebels of your people will aspire to establish the vision [(according to their interpretation)], and they will fail.


###### Daniel 11:15

וְיָבֹא֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן וְיִשְׁפֹּךְ֙ סֽוֹלְלָ֔ה וְלָכַ֖ד עִ֣יר מִבְצָר֑וֹת וּזְרֹע֤וֹת הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ לֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔דוּ וְעַם֙ מִבְחָרָ֔יו וְאֵ֥ין כֹּ֖חַ לַעֲמֹֽד׃

So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mound, and seize a well fortified city and the arms of the south shall not withstand, nor his chosen people, for they shall have no strength to withstand.

And the king of the north will come and spill out a siege-mound and take a fortified city. And the southern strength will fail. And [though] his chosen men [be with the kings of the south], he will be unable to withstand [the forces of the north.]


###### Daniel 11:16

וְיַ֨עַשׂ הַבָּ֤א אֵלָיו֙ כִּרְצוֹנ֔וֹ וְאֵ֥ין עוֹמֵ֖ד לְפָנָ֑יו וְיַעֲמֹ֥ד בְּאֶֽרֶץ־הַצְּבִ֖י וְכָלָ֥ה בְיָדֽוֹ׃

But he who comes against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the land of beauty, and in his hand shall be destruction.

And he [(the king of the north)] who comes against him will do [with him] as he wills, and none will stand against him, and he will stand in Eretz Hatzvi [(Eretz Yisrael)], and he will destroy (it) with his forces.

וְיָשֵׂ֣ם׀פָּ֠נָ֠יו לָב֞וֹא בְּתֹ֧קֶף כׇּל־מַלְכוּת֛וֹ וִישָׁרִ֥ים עִמּ֖וֹ וְעָשָׂ֑ה וּבַ֤ת הַנָּשִׁים֙ יִתֶּן־ל֣וֹ לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֔הּ וְלֹ֥א תַעֲמֹ֖ד וְלֹא־ל֥וֹ תִהְיֶֽה׃

He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, but he shall make peace with him: and he shall give him the daughter of women, to destroy it: but she shall not stand or remain his.

And he will set his face to come against the strength of his entire kingdom, and (against) the just [(those of Israel)] who are with him, and he will prevail. And he [(the king of the north, Antiochus)] will give to him [(his commander in chief, Polypus)] the daughter of women [i.e., "the choicest of women," the congregation of Israel] to destroy her; but it [(his counsel)] will not prevail, and she will not be his [(for Matithyahu the son of Yochanan will rescue her.)]

(וישב) [וְיָשֵׂ֧ם]׀פָּנָ֛יו לְאִיִּ֖ים וְלָכַ֣ד רַבִּ֑ים וְהִשְׁבִּ֨ית קָצִ֤ין חֶרְפָּתוֹ֙ ל֔וֹ בִּלְתִּ֥י חֶרְפָּת֖וֹ יָשִׁ֥יב לֽוֹ׃

After this he shall turn his face to the isles, and shall take many: but a commander shall put an end to his insult; indeed, he shall cause his insult to return upon him.

And he will turn his face to the isles, and he will take many. And the Chief will end his blasphemies against Him [and Israel]. He will requite unto him more than his blasphemies.

וְיָשֵׁ֣ב פָּנָ֔יו לְמָעוּזֵּ֖י אַרְצ֑וֹ וְנִכְשַׁ֥ל וְנָפַ֖ל וְלֹ֥א יִמָּצֵֽא׃

Then he shall turn his face towards the strongholds of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.

And he will turn his face to [return to] the strongholds of his land, and he will stumble and fall and no longer be found [on earth].


###### Daniel 11:20

וְעָמַ֧ד עַל־כַּנּ֛וֹ מַעֲבִ֥יר נוֹגֵ֖שׂ הֶ֣דֶר מַלְכ֑וּת וּבְיָמִ֤ים אֲחָדִים֙ יִשָּׁבֵ֔ר וְלֹ֥א בְאַפַּ֖יִם וְלֹ֥א בְמִלְחָמָֽה׃

Then there shall stand up in his place one who shall send an exactor of taxes throughout glory of the kingdom, but within a few days he shall be destroyed, but not in anger, or in battle.

And there will rise on his base the caster-out of the oppressor, the glory of kingdom [(the Hasmonean dynasty)]. But in a short time it will be broken — and not by the wrath [of another nation], and not by war, [(but by the contention of the brothers Aristobulus and Hyrcanus for the succession)].


###### Daniel 11:21

וְעָמַ֤ד עַל־כַּנּוֹ֙ נִבְזֶ֔ה וְלֹא־נָתְנ֥וּ עָלָ֖יו ה֣וֹד מַלְכ֑וּת וּבָ֣א בְשַׁלְוָ֔ה וְהֶחֱזִ֥יק מַלְכ֖וּת בַּחֲלַקְלַקּֽוֹת׃

And in his place shall stand up a vile person, to whom the honour of the kingdom has not been given: but he shall come in without difficulty, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

And there will rise on his place the despised one [(Esav [Rome, viz. Ovadiah 1:2])], upon whom the majesty of kingdom was not conferred. But he will come quietly and hold the kingdom with subtlety.

וּזְרֹע֥וֹת הַשֶּׁ֛טֶף יִשָּׁטְפ֥וּ מִלְּפָנָ֖יו וְיִשָּׁבֵ֑רוּ וְגַ֖ם נְגִ֥יד בְּרִֽית׃

And the force of the flood shall be swept away before him, and shall be broken; even the prince of the covenant.

And those who swept [all before them] by force of arms [i.e., the Greeks] will be swept away before him, as will the maker of the covenant [i.e., the king of Israel who made a covenant with the Romans, which they broke].


###### Daniel 11:23

וּמִן־הִֽתְחַבְּר֥וּת אֵלָ֖יו יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה מִרְמָ֑ה וְעָלָ֥ה וְעָצַ֖ם בִּמְעַט־גּֽוֹי׃

And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.

And from this alliance with him [(the king of Israel)] he will weave deceit [(concealing evil designs)], and he will come up [from his place] and with scant forces overcome [(his enemies around the land of Judah — Edom, Ammon, and Moav — the king of Judah assisting him)].

בְּשַׁלְוָ֞ה וּבְמִשְׁמַנֵּ֣י מְדִינָה֮ יָבוֹא֒ וְעָשָׂ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹא־עָשׂ֤וּ אֲבֹתָיו֙ וַאֲב֣וֹת אֲבֹתָ֔יו בִּזָּ֧ה וְשָׁלָ֛ל וּרְכ֖וּשׁ לָהֶ֣ם יִבְז֑וֹר וְעַ֧ל מִבְצָרִ֛ים יְחַשֵּׁ֥ב מַחְשְׁבֹתָ֖יו וְעַד־עֵֽת׃

He shall enter without difficulty even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, or his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them prey, and spoil, and riches: and he shall devise schemes against the strongholds, but only for a time.

Quietly [(and deceitfully)] and into the fats of the land shall he come, and he will do what his fathers and his fathers' fathers had not done. And spoils and wealth shall he spread among them [(among all who would take his yoke upon them)]. And over fortresses will he plot his designs [(placing his commanders over them)] until the time [(when all is under his domination)].

וְיָעֵר֩ כֹּח֨וֹ וּלְבָב֜וֹ עַל־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֘גֶב֮ בְּחַ֣יִל גָּדוֹל֒ וּמֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֗גֶב יִתְגָּרֶה֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה בְּחַֽיִל־גָּד֥וֹל וְעָצ֖וּם עַד־מְאֹ֑ד וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔ד כִּֽי־יַחְשְׁב֥וּ עָלָ֖יו מַחֲשָׁבֽוֹת׃

And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall devise schemes against him.

And he will rouse up his strength and his heart against the king of the south with a great army. And the king of the south will wage war with a great and extremely powerful army, but he will not prevail. For they will have plotted designs against him [(by bribing his retainers)].
