###### Daniel 8:1

בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שָׁל֔וֹשׁ לְמַלְכ֖וּת בֵּלְאשַׁצַּ֣ר הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ חָז֞וֹן נִרְאָ֤ה אֵלַי֙ אֲנִ֣י דָנִיֵּ֔אל אַחֲרֵ֛י הַנִּרְאָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י בַּתְּחִלָּֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
In the third year of the reign of king Belshażżar a vision appeared to me, even to me Daniyyel, after that which appeared to me at the first.

וָֽאֶרְאֶה֮ בֶּחָזוֹן֒ וַֽיְהִי֙ בִּרְאֹתִ֔י וַאֲנִי֙ בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן הַבִּירָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵילָ֣ם הַמְּדִינָ֑ה וָאֶרְאֶה֙ בֶּֽחָז֔וֹן וַאֲנִ֥י הָיִ֖יתִי עַל־אוּבַ֥ל אוּלָֽי׃

And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan the capital, which is in the province of ῾Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulay.

וָאֶשָּׂ֤א עֵינַי֙ וָאֶרְאֶ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֣ה**׀** אַ֣יִל אֶחָ֗ד עֹמֵ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֻבָ֖ל וְל֣וֹ קְרָנָ֑יִם וְהַקְּרָנַ֣יִם גְּבֹה֗וֹת וְהָאַחַת֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה מִן־הַשֵּׁנִ֔ית וְהַ֨גְּבֹהָ֔ה עֹלָ֖ה בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃

Then I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

And I lifted my eyes, and I saw, and, behold, a two-horned ram [(the kingdoms of Paras, and Madai)] standing before the river. רָאִ֣יתִי אֶת־הָאַ֡יִל מְנַגֵּ֩חַ֩ יָ֨מָּה וְצָפ֜וֹנָה וָנֶ֗גְבָּה וְכׇל־חַיּוֹת֙ לֹֽא־יַֽעַמְד֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּ֖יל מִיָּד֑וֹ וְעָשָׂ֥ה כִרְצֹנ֖וֹ וְהִגְדִּֽיל׃

I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, was not there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and magnified himself.

I saw the ram butting: west, north, and south. And all the animals could not withstand him, and there was no deliverance from him, and he did as he willed and grew great.


###### Daniel 8:5

וַאֲנִ֣י**׀** הָיִ֣יתִי מֵבִ֗ין וְהִנֵּ֤ה צְפִיר־הָֽעִזִּים֙ בָּ֤א מִן־הַֽמַּעֲרָב֙ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י כׇל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֵ֥ין נוֹגֵ֖עַ בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְהַ֨צָּפִ֔יר קֶ֥רֶן חָז֖וּת בֵּ֥ין עֵינָֽיו׃

And as I was considering, behold, a he goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth, and did not touch the ground: and the goat had a conspicuous horn between its eyes.

And I observed, and, behold, a he-goat coming from the west over all the earth and not touching the earth [(seeming to be skipping in the air)]. And the he-goat had a highly prominent horn between his eyes.

וַיָּבֹ֗א עַד־הָאַ֙יִל֙ בַּ֣עַל הַקְּרָנַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר רָאִ֔יתִי עֹמֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הָאֻבָ֑ל וַיָּ֥רׇץ אֵלָ֖יו בַּחֲמַ֥ת כֹּחֽוֹ׃

And it came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran at him in the fury of his power.

וּרְאִיתִ֞יו מַגִּ֣יעַ**׀** אֵ֣צֶל הָאַ֗יִל וַיִּתְמַרְמַ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ וַיַּ֣ךְ אֶת־הָאַ֗יִל וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת־שְׁתֵּ֣י קְרָנָ֔יו וְלֹא־הָ֥יָה כֹ֛חַ בָּאַ֖יִל לַעֲמֹ֣ד לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤הוּ אַ֙רְצָה֙ וַֽיִּרְמְסֵ֔הוּ וְלֹא־הָיָ֥ה מַצִּ֛יל לָאַ֖יִל מִיָּדֽוֹ׃

And I saw it come close to the ram, and it was enraged against him, and smote the ram, and broke his two horns: and the ram had no power to stand before it, but he cast him down to the ground, and trampled upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

And I saw him reaching the ram and battling with him. And he smote the ram and broke his two horns. And the ram had not strength to withstand him. And he thrust him to the earth and trod him down, and there was no saving the ram from him.

וּצְפִ֥יר הָעִזִּ֖ים הִגְדִּ֣יל עַד־מְאֹ֑ד וּכְעׇצְמ֗וֹ נִשְׁבְּרָה֙ הַקֶּ֣רֶן הַגְּדֹלָ֔ה וַֽתַּעֲלֶ֜נָה חָז֤וּת אַרְבַּע֙ תַּחְתֶּ֔יהָ לְאַרְבַּ֖ע רוּח֥וֹת הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

Therefore the he goat grew very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it came up four conspicuous ones towards the four winds of heaven.

And the he-goat grew very great, and at the height of his power, the great horn broke, and there appeared four (horns) rising in its place to the four sides of heaven.

וּמִן־הָאַחַ֣ת מֵהֶ֔ם יָצָ֥א קֶֽרֶן־אַחַ֖ת מִצְּעִירָ֑ה וַתִּגְדַּל־יֶ֛תֶר אֶל־הַנֶּ֥גֶב וְאֶל־הַמִּזְרָ֖ח וְאֶל־הַצֶּֽבִי׃

And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which grew exceedingly great, towards the south, and towards the east, and towards the land of beauty.

And from one of them [i.e., from one of these kingdoms, Edom,] there came forth a diminutive horn [(Titus)] [viz. Ovadiah 1:2], and he grew exceedingly great: to the south [(Egypt)], to the east, and to the Tzevi [(Eretz Yisrael)].

וַתִּגְדַּ֖ל עַד־צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַתַּפֵּ֥ל אַ֛רְצָה מִן־הַצָּבָ֥א וּמִן־הַכּוֹכָבִ֖ים וַֽתִּרְמְסֵֽם׃

And it grew great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and trampled upon them.

###### Daniel 8:11

וְעַ֥ד שַֽׂר־הַצָּבָ֖א הִגְדִּ֑יל וּמִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (הרים) [הוּרַ֣ם] הַתָּמִ֔יד וְהֻשְׁלַ֖ךְ מְכ֥וֹן מִקְדָּשֽׁוֹ׃

Yes, it magnified itself even to the prince of the host, and from him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

And until [the abode (i.e., the Temple) of] the Chief of the Host did he grow, and by him [(and his troops)] was the continual [burnt-offering] abolished, and His holy abode cast [to the ground].


###### Daniel 8:12

וְצָבָ֛א תִּנָּתֵ֥ן עַל־הַתָּמִ֖יד בְּפָ֑שַׁע וְתַשְׁלֵ֤ךְ אֱמֶת֙ אַ֔רְצָה וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה וְהִצְלִֽיחָה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And for an appointed time it was flagrantly set against the daily sacrifice, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

And a time will be set for the [abolition of] the continual [burnt-offering] by [displacement with] the "offense" [i.e., idolatry.] And it [(idolatry)] shall cast truth [(Torah)] to the ground; and it has wrought and prospered.

וָאֶשְׁמְעָ֥ה אֶֽחָד־קָד֖וֹשׁ מְדַבֵּ֑ר וַיֹּ֩אמֶר֩ אֶחָ֨ד קָד֜וֹשׁ לַפַּֽלְמוֹנִ֣י הַֽמְדַבֵּ֗ר עַד־מָתַ֞י הֶחָז֤וֹן הַתָּמִיד֙ וְהַפֶּ֣שַׁע שֹׁמֵ֔ם תֵּ֛ת וְקֹ֥דֶשׁ וְצָבָ֖א מִרְמָֽס׃

Then I heard one holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

And I heard a holy one [(one of the angels)] speaking. And the holy one said to the one speaking: Until when will this vision (last) the [displacement of the] continual [burnt-offering] by "the mute offense" [(idolatry)], the relegating of the holy [abode] and the host [of heaven] to be trodden underfoot?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י עַ֚ד עֶ֣רֶב בֹּ֔קֶר אַלְפַּ֖יִם וּשְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וְנִצְדַּ֖ק קֹֽדֶשׁ׃

And he said to me, For two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings; then shall the sanctuary be restored.

And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniyyel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me what looked like a man.

And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulay, who called, and said, Gavri᾽el, make this man understand the vision.

וַיָּבֹא֙ אֵ֣צֶל עׇמְדִ֔י וּבְבֹא֣וֹ נִבְעַ֔תִּי וָאֶפְּלָ֖ה עַל־פָּנָ֑י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַי֙ הָבֵ֣ן בֶּן־אָדָ֔ם כִּ֖י לְעֶת־קֵ֥ץ הֶחָזֽוֹן׃

So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said to me, Understand, O son of man: for the vision is for the time of the end.

Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep on my face towards the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the latter end of the indignation: for it is for the appointed time of the end.

הָאַ֥יִל אֲשֶׁר־רָאִ֖יתָ בַּ֣עַל הַקְּרָנָ֑יִם מַלְכֵ֖י מָדַ֥י וּפָרָֽס׃

The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Maday and Paras.

The two-horned ram that you saw are the kings of Madai and Paras [viz. verse 2, etc.].


###### Daniel 8:21

וְהַצָּפִ֥יר הַשָּׂעִ֖יר מֶ֣לֶךְ יָוָ֑ן וְהַקֶּ֤רֶן הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֵּין־עֵינָ֔יו ה֖וּא הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃

And the rough he goat is the king of Yavan: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

And the he-goat is the king of Yavan [(Greece)], and the great horn between his eyes is the first king [(Alexander of Macedonia, who killed Darius, the son of Esther)].


###### Daniel 8:22

וְהַ֨נִּשְׁבֶּ֔רֶת וַתַּֽעֲמֹ֥דְנָה אַרְבַּ֖ע תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ אַרְבַּ֧ע מַלְכֻי֛וֹת מִגּ֥וֹי יַעֲמֹ֖דְנָה וְלֹ֥א בְכֹחֽוֹ׃

As for the horn which was broken, in place of which four others arose, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not with his power.

And its being broken, and four (horns rising) in its place — Four kings will arise from the nation [(divided by Alexander at his death)], and will not [attain to] his [(the first king's)] power.

וּֽבְאַחֲרִית֙ מַלְכוּתָ֔ם כְּהָתֵ֖ם הַפֹּשְׁעִ֑ים יַעֲמֹ֛ד מֶ֥לֶךְ עַז־פָּנִ֖ים וּמֵבִ֥ין חִידֽוֹת׃

And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and one who understands riddles, shall arise.

And in the end of their kingdom, when the [time comes for] the offenders [(the evildoers of Israel in the second Temple)] to be eliminated, there will arise a king [(Titus)], brazen-faced and wily.

וְעָצַ֤ם כֹּחוֹ֙ וְלֹ֣א בְכֹח֔וֹ וְנִפְלָא֥וֹת יַשְׁחִ֖ית וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ וְעָשָׂ֑ה וְהִשְׁחִ֥ית עֲצוּמִ֖ים וְעַם־קְדֹשִֽׁים׃

And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy remarkably, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

And his power will grow, but not through his strength [(but through his canniness)]. And he will destroy [(the idolators)] wondrously; and he will prosper and do [his will]. And he will destroy [many] powerful [nations], and the holy people [(Israel, who believe in the Torah)].

וְעַל־שִׂכְל֗וֹ וְהִצְלִ֤יחַ מִרְמָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ וּבִלְבָב֣וֹ יַגְדִּ֔יל וּבְשַׁלְוָ֖ה יַשְׁחִ֣ית רַבִּ֑ים וְעַ֤ל שַׂר־שָׂרִים֙ יַעֲמֹ֔ד וּבְאֶ֥פֶס יָ֖ד יִשָּׁבֵֽר׃

And through his cunning also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand, and shall magnify himself in his heart, and without difficulty he shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

And because he prospers and succeeds [in everything he does], he will [cling to] his craftiness, and grow haughty of heart, and will destroy many [(of his allies)] with equanimity. And against the Chief of chiefs will he rise [viz. verse 11], and by a powerless one [(a mosquito [viz. Gittin 56b])] will he be broken.

וּמַרְאֵ֨ה הָעֶ֧רֶב וְהַבֹּ֛קֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נֶאֱמַ֖ר אֱמֶ֣ת ה֑וּא וְאַתָּה֙ סְתֹ֣ם הֶֽחָז֔וֹן כִּ֖י לְיָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים׃

And the vision of the evenings and the mornings which was told is true: but seal up the vision; for it refers to many days hence.

And the vision of "erev-boker" [viz. 14], which was stated (to you) is true. And you, seal up [(the vision in your heart and do not elucidate it)], for [it will materialize only after] many days.

וַאֲנִ֣י דָנִיֵּ֗אל נִהְיֵ֤יתִי וְנֶֽחֱלֵ֙יתִי֙ יָמִ֔ים וָאָק֕וּם וָאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה אֶת־מְלֶ֣אכֶת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וָאֶשְׁתּוֹמֵ֥ם עַל־הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה וְאֵ֥ין מֵבִֽין׃{פ}
