###### Deuteronomy 22:1

לֹֽא־תִרְאֶה֩ אֶת־שׁ֨וֹר אָחִ֜יךָ א֤וֹ אֶת־שֵׂיוֹ֙ נִדָּחִ֔ים וְהִתְעַלַּמְתָּ֖ מֵהֶ֑ם הָשֵׁ֥ב תְּשִׁיבֵ֖ם לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

You may not observe your brother’s ox or his sheep lost and conceal yourself from them; you must surely return them to your brother.

Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely bring them back to thy brother.

וְאִם־לֹ֨א קָר֥וֹב אָחִ֛יךָ אֵלֶ֖יךָ וְלֹ֣א יְדַעְתּ֑וֹ וַאֲסַפְתּוֹ֙ אֶל־תּ֣וֹךְ בֵּיתֶ֔ךָ וְהָיָ֣ה עִמְּךָ֗ עַ֣ד דְּרֹ֤שׁ אָחִ֙יךָ֙ אֹת֔וֹ וַהֲשֵׁבֹת֖וֹ לֽוֹ׃

But if your brother is not near you or you do not know him, gather it into your house and let it stay with you until your brother seeks it, when you must return it to him.

And if thy brother be not near to thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it to thy own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.

And if your brother is not near to you, and you do not know him, then you shall gather it into the midst of your house, and it shall be with you until you make inquiry of your brother concerning it [when he comes to claim it, to ascertain that his claims are legitimate], and you shall return it to him [(It must constitute a "return"; do not feed it as much as it is worth and then claim that amount from the owner. But if its work can compensate for its food, then let it work; if not, sell it and give that money to the owner.)]

וְכֵ֧ן תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה לַחֲמֹר֗וֹ וְכֵ֣ן תַּעֲשֶׂה֮ לְשִׂמְלָתוֹ֒ וְכֵ֣ן תַּעֲשֶׂ֗ה לְכׇל־אֲבֵדַ֥ת אָחִ֛יךָ אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאבַ֥ד מִמֶּ֖נּוּ וּמְצָאתָ֑הּ לֹ֥א תוּכַ֖ל לְהִתְעַלֵּֽם׃{ס}

And so are you to do for his donkey, and so are you to do for his garment, and so are you to do for any lost object of your brother’s that is lost from him which you find. You may not conceal yourself.

In like manner shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his garment; and with every lost thing of thy brother’s, which he has lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayst not hide thyself.

Do not observe your brother’s donkey or his ox collapsing on the road and ignore them. You must surely lift it up with him.

Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

You shall not see the ass of your brother or his ox fallen on the way and ignore them; raise shall you raise [the animal's fallen load] with him [the owner. (If he himself does not care to do so, you are exempt.)]

A man’s attire may not be on a woman nor may a man wear a woman’s garment; for the abomination of Adonoy, your God, are all who do these [things].

A woman shall not wear that which pertains to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination to the Lord thy God.

A man's garment shall not be upon a woman, [making her appear like a man, so that she can mix with them, this being a ploy for promiscuity], and a man shall not wear a woman's garment [in order to mix with them], for the abomination of the L-rd your G-d are all who do these [(The Torah forbade only a garment which leads to "abomination.")]

כִּ֣י יִקָּרֵ֣א ¹קַן־צִפּ֣וֹר׀לְפָנֶ֡יךָ בַּדֶּ֜רֶךְ בְּכׇל־עֵ֣ץ**׀** א֣וֹ עַל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶפְרֹחִים֙ א֣וֹ בֵיצִ֔ים וְהָאֵ֤ם רֹבֶ֙צֶת֙ עַל־הָֽאֶפְרֹחִ֔ים א֖וֹ עַל־הַבֵּיצִ֑ים לֹא־תִקַּ֥ח הָאֵ֖ם עַל־הַבָּנִֽים׃

If you should chance upon a bird’s nest before you on the road in any tree, or on the ground, [with] fledglings or eggs, and the mother is sitting on the fledglings or on the eggs; do not take the mother with her offspring.

If a bird’s nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the mother bird sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the mother bird together with the young:

If there chance before you a bird's nest on the way [(This excludes what is already at hand (i.e., domesticated fowl)] on any tree or on the ground, fledglings or eggs, the mother bird lying upon the fledglings or upon the eggs — you shall not take the mother bird while she is yet on the young.

שַׁלֵּ֤חַ תְּשַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־הָאֵ֔ם וְאֶת־הַבָּנִ֖ים תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֑ךְ לְמַ֙עַן֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ וְהַאֲרַכְתָּ֖ יָמִֽים׃{ס}

You must surely send away the mother and the offspring take for yourself, so that you will benefit and you will live long.

but thou shalt surely let the mother go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst prolong thy days.

Send shall you send away the mother bird and the young shall you take for yourself, so that it shall be good for you and you prolong days [(a fortiori, the granting of reward for the observance of more onerous mitzvoth)].

כִּ֤י תִבְנֶה֙ בַּ֣יִת חָדָ֔שׁ וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ מַעֲקֶ֖ה לְגַגֶּ֑ךָ וְלֹֽא־תָשִׂ֤ים דָּמִים֙ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ כִּֽי־יִפֹּ֥ל הַנֹּפֵ֖ל מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

When you build a new home, you are to make a fence for your roof; and do not place blood [liability] in your house, for someone who should fall may fall from it.

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a parapet for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thy house, if any man fall from it.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
[The rationale of the juxtaposition of the verses that follow: If you fulfill the mitzvah of sending away the mother bird, in the end, you will build a new house and fulfill the mitzvah of making a railing, (for one mitzvah brings another in its train), and you will attain to a vineyard, and a field, and beautiful garments.] If you build a new house, you shall make a railing for your roof, and you shall not place blood in your house when the faller falls from it. [He deserves to fall (in terms of G-d's judgment) notwithstanding which, let his falling not be occasioned by you, (merit being occasioned by the meritorious one, and liability by him who is liable)].

לֹא־תִזְרַ֥ע כַּרְמְךָ֖ כִּלְאָ֑יִם פֶּן־תִּקְדַּ֗שׁ הַֽמְלֵאָ֤ה הַזֶּ֙רַע֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּזְרָ֔ע וּתְבוּאַ֖ת הַכָּֽרֶם׃{ס}

Do not plant in your vineyard mixed species, lest the expansion become obnoxious—the seed that you plant—and the produce of the vineyard.

Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of the seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of the vineyard, be forfeited.

You shall not sow your vineyard with mixed seed [wheat, barley, and grain kernels with one hand-throw], lest there be rejected the fullness [i.e., the growth] of the seed which you shall sow and the produce of the vineyard.

Make yourself pendant threads upon four corners of your garment that you cover with.

Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four corners of thy covering, with which thou coverest thyself.

Fringes shall you make for yourself [(even from sha'atnez — hence the juxtaposition)] on the four corners of your garment wherewith you cover yourself.

###### Deuteronomy 22:14

וְשָׂ֥ם לָהּ֙ עֲלִילֹ֣ת דְּבָרִ֔ים וְהוֹצִ֥א עָלֶ֖יהָ שֵׁ֣ם רָ֑ע וְאָמַ֗ר אֶת־הָאִשָּׁ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ לָקַ֔חְתִּי וָאֶקְרַ֣ב אֵלֶ֔יהָ וְלֹא־מָצָ֥אתִי לָ֖הּ בְּתוּלִֽים׃

Then berates her with calumnies and alleges defamation about her, and he claims, ‘‘I married this woman and was intimate with her, and did not find signs of her virginity.’’

וְלָקַ֛ח אֲבִ֥י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ וְאִמָּ֑הּ וְהוֹצִ֜יאוּ אֶת־בְּתוּלֵ֧י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֛ אֶל־זִקְנֵ֥י הָעִ֖יר הַשָּֽׁעְרָה׃

The girl’s father and mother will take and will prove the girl’s virginity to the city judges in the court.

then shall the father of the girl, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the girl’s virginity to the elders of the city in the gate:

Then the father of the maiden and her mother shall take [("Let the rearers of the evil sprout be shamed by it" (Had she been completely virtuous she would not have been suspected)], and they shall bring out the virgin signs of the maiden to the elders of the city to the gate.

The girl’s father should assert to the judges, ‘‘My daughter did I marry to this man as a wife and he hates her.

וְהִנֵּה־ה֡וּא שָׂם֩ עֲלִילֹ֨ת דְּבָרִ֜ים לֵאמֹ֗ר לֹֽא־מָצָ֤אתִי לְבִתְּךָ֙ בְּתוּלִ֔ים וְאֵ֖לֶּה בְּתוּלֵ֣י בִתִּ֑י וּפָֽרְשׂוּ֙ הַשִּׂמְלָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י זִקְנֵ֥י הָעִֽיר׃

Look! He has promulgated libelous words, claiming ‘I did not find signs of your daughter’s virginity.’ But this is [the proof of] my daughter’s virginity.’’ And let them spread the cloth before the city judges.

and, lo, he has laid accusing speeches against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a virgin; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.

And, behold, he has uttered a libel, saying: I did not find your daughter to be a virgin — and these are the virgin signs of my daughter. And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city [i.e., They shall make her innocence of the accusation as manifest as a spread-out garment.]

The judges of that city will take the man and will chastise him.

וְעָנְשׁ֨וּ אֹת֜וֹ מֵ֣אָה כֶ֗סֶף וְנָתְנוּ֙ לַאֲבִ֣י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה כִּ֤י הוֹצִיא֙ שֵׁ֣ם רָ֔ע עַ֖ל בְּתוּלַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֽוֹ־תִהְיֶ֣ה לְאִשָּׁ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֥ל לְשַׁלְּחָ֖הּ כׇּל־יָמָֽיו׃{ס}

And they will fine him one hundred silver [shekels] and give [them] to the girl’s father, because he defamed a virgin of Yisroel; and she shall remain his wife, he may not divorce her all his life.

and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the girl, because he has brought out an evil name upon a virgin of Yisra᾽el: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

And they shall fine him a hundred (shekels of) silver, and they shall give it to the father of the maiden, for he has given out an evil name about a virgin of Israel; and to him shall she be as a wife. He shall not be able to send her away all of his days.

However, if the allegation is true; signs of the girl’s virginity were not found.

וְהוֹצִ֨יאוּ אֶת־הַֽנַּעֲרָ֜ אֶל־פֶּ֣תַח בֵּית־אָבִ֗יהָ וּסְקָל֩וּהָ֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י עִירָ֤הּ בָּאֲבָנִים֙ וָמֵ֔תָה כִּֽי־עָשְׂתָ֤ה נְבָלָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִזְנ֖וֹת בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יהָ וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃{ס}

They are to take the girl out to the entrance of her father’s home and the people of her city will stone her with stones to death, because she committed a disgraceful act against Yisroel by behaving promiscuously [in] her father’s house; and you will eliminate the evil within you.

then they shall bring out the girl to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she has perpetrated wantonness in Yisra᾽el, to play the harlot in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

Then they shall take out the maiden to the door of her father's house [("See the sprout that you have reared!")], and the men of her city shall stone her with stones [i.e., she shall be stoned in the presence of all the men of the city], and she shall die, for she has done a vile thing in Israel, to harlotize [while in] her father's house; and you shall remove the evil from your midst.

כִּֽי־יִמָּצֵ֨א אִ֜ישׁ שֹׁכֵ֣ב**׀** עִם־אִשָּׁ֣ה בְעֻֽלַת־בַּ֗עַל וּמֵ֙תוּ֙ גַּם־שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם הָאִ֛ישׁ הַשֹּׁכֵ֥ב עִם־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וְהָאִשָּׁ֑ה וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{ס}

If a man is found having intercourse with a woman who is the wife of a man, even both of them shall die—the man who had intercourse with the woman and the woman—and you will eliminate the evil from Yisroel.

If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Yisra᾽el.

If there be found a man lying with a woman who had been cohabited with by a husband, then there shall be put to death, also both of them [("both of them") excluding an act of (self-) arousal (by the man), from which she derives no gratification, and ("also") including those who come (and cohabit with them) after they had been sentenced)], the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; and you shall remove the evil from Israel.
