## Deuteronomy Chapter 34

###### Deuteronomy 34:1

וַיַּ֨עַל מֹשֶׁ֜ה מֵעַרְבֹ֤ת מוֹאָב֙ אֶל־הַ֣ר נְב֔וֹ רֹ֚אשׁ הַפִּסְגָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֣י יְרֵח֑וֹ וַיַּרְאֵ֨הוּ יְהֹוָ֧ה אֶת־כׇּל־הָאָ֛רֶץ אֶת־הַגִּלְעָ֖ד עַד־דָּֽן׃

Moshe went up from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo—the peak of the crest that faces Yereicho; and Adonoy showed him the entire land, the Gil’od till Don.

And Moshe went up from the plains of Mo᾽av to the mountain of Nevo, to the top of Pisga, facing Yereĥo, And the Lord showed him all the land of Gil῾ad, to Dan,

And Moses went up [in one bound] from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo, the top of the height which faces Jericho, and the L-rd showed him all of the land [(He showed him all of Eretz Yisrael in its (time of) peace, and the oppressors who were destined to rise up against it)], the Gilead until Dan [(He showed him the sons of Dan serving idolatry (Judges 18:30), and He showed him Shimshon, of the tribe of Dan, who would arise as a savior.)]

וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־נַפְתָּלִ֔י וְאֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וּמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־אֶ֣רֶץ יְהוּדָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיָּ֥ם הָאַחֲרֽוֹן׃

And all of Naftoli, and the land of Ephraim and Menasheh; and all the land of Yehudah up until the rearward Sea.

וְאֶת־הַנֶּ֗גֶב וְֽאֶת־הַכִּכָּ֞ר בִּקְעַ֧ת יְרֵח֛וֹ עִ֥יר הַתְּמָרִ֖ים עַד־צֹֽעַר׃

And the Negev, and the plain, the valley of Yereicho, the city of date-palms, till Tzo’ar.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֵלָ֗יו זֹ֤את הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִ֠שְׁבַּ֠עְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֨ם לְיִצְחָ֤ק וּֽלְיַעֲקֹב֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְזַרְעֲךָ֖ אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה הֶרְאִיתִ֣יךָ בְעֵינֶ֔יךָ וְשָׁ֖מָּה לֹ֥א תַעֲבֹֽר׃

Adonoy said to him, ‘‘This is the land that I swore to Avrohom, to Yitzchok, and to Yaakov, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants ’; I have shown it to you with your eyes, but you will not cross over there.’’

And the Lord said to him, This is the land which I swore to Avraham, to Yiżĥaq and to Ya῾aqov, saying, I will give it to thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thy eyes, but thou shalt not go over there.

And the L-rd said to him: This is the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; I have shown it to you before your eyes [so that you go to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob] and say [to them]: To your seed shall I give it [i.e., I have fulfilled My oath]; but [it is a decree before Me that] there you shall not pass over [(Otherwise, I would have kept you alive until you saw them planted and settled there, to go and tell the patriarchs of it)]


###### Deuteronomy 34:5

וַיָּ֨מׇת שָׁ֜ם מֹשֶׁ֧ה עֶבֶד־יְהֹוָ֛ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מוֹאָ֖ב עַל־פִּ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃

Moshe, Adonoy’s servant, died there, in the land of Moav, by the mouth of Adonoy.

So Moshe the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Mo᾽av, according to the word of the Lord.

[(Up to this point, Moses wrote; from this point on, Joshua wrote.)] And Moses died there, the servant of the L-rd, in the land of Moav, by the word of the L-rd.


###### Deuteronomy 34:6

וַיִּקְבֹּ֨ר אֹת֤וֹ בַגַּי֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֔ב מ֖וּל בֵּ֣ית פְּע֑וֹר וְלֹא־יָדַ֥ע אִישׁ֙ אֶת־קְבֻ֣רָת֔וֹ עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

He buried him in the valley in the land of Moav facing Beis Peor; and no man knows his burial place till this very day.

And he buried him in the valley in the land of Mo᾽av, over against Bet-pe῾or: but no man knows his grave to this day.

And He [Himself] buried him in the valley in the land of Moav opposite Beth-Peor [(His grave had been readied there from the six days of creation to atone for the sin of Peor)]; and no man knew his grave, until this very day.


###### Deuteronomy 34:7

וּמֹשֶׁ֗ה בֶּן־מֵאָ֧ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים שָׁנָ֖ה בְּמֹת֑וֹ לֹא־כָהֲתָ֥ה עֵינ֖וֹ וְלֹא־נָ֥ס לֵחֹֽה׃

And Moshe was 120 years old at his death; his appearance was not dulled, and his freshness did not fade.

And Moshe was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

And Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye did not dim [even after he died], and his sap did not flee [(He did not decompose and his lineaments did not change)].


###### Deuteronomy 34:8

וַיִּבְכּוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֛ה בְּעַֽרְבֹ֥ת מוֹאָ֖ב שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים י֑וֹם וַֽיִּתְּמ֔וּ יְמֵ֥י בְכִ֖י אֵ֥בֶל מֹשֶֽׁה׃

Bnei Yisroel bewailed Moshe on the plains of Moav for thirty days; [after which] ended the days of bewailing in Moshe’s mourning period.

And the children of Yisra᾽el wept for Moshe in the plains of Mo᾽av thirty days: and the days of weeping and mourning for Moshe were ended.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And the children of Israel [(the men)] mourned Moses in the plains of Moav thirty days [(whereas Aaron, who had pursued peace between man and his neighbor and man and his wife, was mourned by "all the house of Israel," men and women (Numbers 20:29)]; and the days of the weeping of the mourning of Moses ended.

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֗וּן מָלֵא֙ ר֣וּחַ חׇכְמָ֔ה כִּֽי־סָמַ֥ךְ מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־יָדָ֖יו עָלָ֑יו וַיִּשְׁמְע֨וּ אֵלָ֤יו בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

And Yehoshua son of Nun was filled with a spirit of wisdom because Moshe had rested his hands on him; Bnei Yisroel listened to him and acted as Adonoy had commanded Moshe.

And Yehoshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moshe had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Yisra᾽el hearkened to him, and did as the Lord commanded Moshe.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had placed his hands upon him; and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and they did as the L-rd had commanded Moses.


###### Deuteronomy 34:10

וְלֹא־קָ֨ם נָבִ֥יא ע֛וֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כְּמֹשֶׁ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְדָע֣וֹ יְהֹוָ֔ה פָּנִ֖ים אֶל־פָּנִֽים׃

And there has not ever arisen a prophet within Yisroel like Moshe, whom Adonoy knew face-to-face.

And there arose not a prophet since in Yisra᾽el like Moshe, whom the Lord knew face to face,

And there arose no other prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the L-rd knew face to face [i.e., Moses being "familiar" with the L-rd, speaking with Him whenever he desired]


###### Deuteronomy 34:11

לְכׇל־הָ֨אֹתֹ֜ת וְהַמּוֹפְתִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר שְׁלָחוֹ֙ יְהֹוָ֔ה לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפַרְעֹ֥ה וּלְכׇל־עֲבָדָ֖יו וּלְכׇל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃

For all the signs and the wonders that Adonoy sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, to Pharoah and to all his slaves and to his entire land.

###### Deuteronomy 34:12

וּלְכֹל֙ הַיָּ֣ד הַחֲזָקָ֔ה וּלְכֹ֖ל הַמּוֹרָ֣א הַגָּד֑וֹל אֲשֶׁר֙ עָשָׂ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֔ה לְעֵינֵ֖י כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

And for the entire strong hand and for the entire great display that Moshe performed in view of all of Yisroel. CHAZAK

And in all the strong hand [of Moses that received the Torah on the tablets], and in all the great awe, [the miracles and the mighty acts in the great, awesome desert] that Moses wrought before the eyes of all Israel, [his venturing to break the tablets before their eyes (viz. 9:17) — and the L-rd concurring in his resolution!]
