דַּבֵּר֮ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ וְיַחֲנוּ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ פִּ֣י הַחִירֹ֔ת בֵּ֥ין מִגְדֹּ֖ל וּבֵ֣ין הַיָּ֑ם לִפְנֵי֙ בַּ֣עַל צְפֹ֔ן נִכְח֥וֹ תַחֲנ֖וּ עַל־הַיָּֽם׃

“Speak to the B’nei Yisrael and have them turn back and camp before Pi haChiros, between Migdol and the sea, facing Ba’al Tzephon. Camp opposite it, near the sea.”

Speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, that they turn and encamp before Pi-haĥirot, between Migdol and the sea, over against Ba῾al-żefon: before it shall you encamp by the sea.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Speak to the children of Israel that they return [The L-rd turned them back to Egypt to deceive Pharaoh into thinking they had lost their way (3)] and encamp before Pi Hachiroth [Pithom, called "Pi Hachiroth" because the Jews became freemen (bnei chorin) there], between Migdol and the sea, before Baal Tzefon [the only remaining Egyptian idol (left over to deceive the Egyptians into relying on its potency)]. Over against it shall you encamp by the sea.

וְאָמַ֤ר פַּרְעֹה֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נְבֻכִ֥ים הֵ֖ם בָּאָ֑רֶץ סָגַ֥ר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃

Pharaoh will then say of the B’nei Yisrael, “They are confused in the land, the desert has shut [trapped] them in.

For Par῾o will say of the children of Yisra᾽el, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness has shut them in.

###### Exodus 14:4

וְחִזַּקְתִּ֣י אֶת־לֵב־פַּרְעֹה֮ וְרָדַ֣ף אַחֲרֵיהֶם֒ וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה בְּפַרְעֹה֙ וּבְכׇל־חֵיל֔וֹ וְיָדְע֥וּ מִצְרַ֖יִם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵֽן׃

I will harden Pharaoh’s heart and he will pursue them. and I will be glorified through Pharaoh and his entire army. Egypt will [then] know that I am Adonoy.” They [the B’nei Yisrael] did just that.

And I will harden Par῾o’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will gain honour by Par῾o, and by all his host; that Miżrayim may know that I am the Lord. And they did so.

And I shall strengthen Pharaoh's heart and he will pursue them, and I will be honored through [the downfall of] Pharaoh and all of his host [(Pharaoh being mentioned first in that he was the "initiator")], and Egypt will know that I am the L-rd. And they did so. [(a tribute to Israel, who did not ask: "How can we turn back towards our pursuers!")]

וַיֻּגַּד֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֥י בָרַ֖ח הָעָ֑ם וַ֠יֵּהָפֵ֠ךְ לְבַ֨ב פַּרְעֹ֤ה וַעֲבָדָיו֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ מַה־זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־שִׁלַּ֥חְנוּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵעׇבְדֵֽנוּ׃

The king of Egypt was told that the people had fled. Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart regarding the people, and they said, “What have we done? [How did] we release Israel from serving us?

And it was told the king of Miżrayim that the people had fled: and the heart of Par῾o and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Yisra᾽el go from serving us?

And it was told to the king of Egypt [on the fourth day, by officers that he had sent with them (after seeing that they did not return to Egypt on the stipulated third day)] that the people had fled. [(On the fifth and sixth days they pursued them; on the night of the seventh Israel went down to the sea; and in the morning — the seventh day of Pesach — they sang (15:1)], and the heart of Pharaoh (12:31) and of his servants (10:7) was reversed against the people. [Now they pursued them for the wealth that they had lent them], and they said: What is this that we did in sending Israel away from serving us!

He took six hundred elite chariots [and crews], and all the [other] chariots of Egypt, and commanders over all of them.

###### Exodus 14:8

וַיְחַזֵּ֣ק יְהֹוָ֗ה אֶת־לֵ֤ב פַּרְעֹה֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּרְדֹּ֕ף אַחֲרֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יֹצְאִ֖ים בְּיָ֥ד רָמָֽה׃

Adonoy hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the B’nei Yisrael. The B’nei Yisrael went out high handedly [in triumph].

And the Lord hardened the heart of Par῾o king of Miżrayim, and he pursued after the children of Yisra᾽el: and the children of Yisra᾽el went out with a high hand.

And the L-rd strengthened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt [Pharaoh wavering between pursuing and not pursuing] and he pursued the children of Israel, and the children of Israel went out with a high hand [i.e., with manifest might].


###### Exodus 14:9

וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ מִצְרַ֜יִם אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשִּׂ֤יגוּ אוֹתָם֙ חֹנִ֣ים עַל־הַיָּ֔ם כׇּל־סוּס֙ רֶ֣כֶב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו וְחֵיל֑וֹ עַל־פִּי֙ הַֽחִירֹ֔ת לִפְנֵ֖י בַּ֥עַל צְפֹֽן׃

The Egyptians pursued them and overtook them as they were encamped by the sea. There were all Pharaoh’s chariot horses, his cavalry and his army [infantry], at Pi haChiros, facing Ba’al Tzephon.

And Miżrayim pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Par῾o, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-haĥirot, before Ba῾al-żefon.

וּפַרְעֹ֖ה הִקְרִ֑יב וַיִּשְׂאוּ֩ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל אֶת־עֵינֵיהֶ֜ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִצְרַ֣יִם**׀** נֹסֵ֣עַ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם וַיִּֽירְאוּ֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהֹוָֽה׃

Pharaoh drew near, and the B’nei Yisrael looked up, and beheld the Egyptians coming after them. They were very frightened, and the B’nei Yisrael cried out to Adonoy.

And when Par῾o drew near, the children of Yisra᾽el lifted up their eyes, and, behold, Miżrayim marched after them; and they were very much afraid: and the children of Yisra᾽el cried out to the Lord.

And Pharaoh pressed ahead [of the others], and the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and, behold, Egypt coming after them [with one heart, as one man], and they were exceedingly afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the L-rd, ["embracing the trade" (prayer) of their fathers: (Abraham — Genesis 19:27; Isaac — 24:63; Jacob — 28:11)].

וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ הֲֽמִבְּלִ֤י אֵין־קְבָרִים֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם לְקַחְתָּ֖נוּ לָמ֣וּת בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר מַה־זֹּאת֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֔נוּ לְהוֹצִיאָ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

They said to Moshe, “Were there not enough graves in Egypt that you took us out to die in the desert? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt?

And they said to Moshe, Because there were no graves in Miżrayim, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? why hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us out of Miżrayim?

And they said to Moses: Is it for lack of graves in Egypt that you have taken us to die in the desert! What is this that you did to us to take us out of Egypt.


###### Exodus 14:12

הֲלֹא־זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבַּ֨רְנוּ אֵלֶ֤יךָ בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר חֲדַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ וְנַֽעַבְדָ֣ה אֶת־מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י ט֥וֹב לָ֙נוּ֙ עֲבֹ֣ד אֶת־מִצְרַ֔יִם מִמֻּתֵ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

This is the [exact] thing that we told you in Egypt saying, ‘Leave us alone and let us serve the Egyptians.’ It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than we should die in the desert.”

Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Miżrayim, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve Miżrayim? For it had been better for us to serve Miżrayim, than that we should die in the wilderness.

Is not this the thing that we spoke to you in Egypt [5:21], saying: Let us be and let us serve Egypt, for it is better for us to serve Egypt than to die in the desert.


###### Exodus 14:13

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֣ה אֶל־הָעָם֮ אַל־תִּירָ֒אוּ֒ הִֽתְיַצְּב֗וּ וּרְאוּ֙ אֶת־יְשׁוּעַ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם הַיּ֑וֹם כִּ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר רְאִיתֶ֤ם אֶת־מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם לֹ֥א תֹסִ֛פוּ לִרְאֹתָ֥ם ע֖וֹד עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃

Moshe said to the people, “Do not be afraid, stand firm and you will see the deliverance of Adonoy, which He will perform for you this day, for the Egyptians you have seen this day you will never again see them, even to eternity.

And Moshe said to the people, Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show you today: for as you have seen Miżrayim this day, you shall not see them again any more for ever.

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Why do you cry to Me? Speak to the B’nei Yisrael and let them move on.

And the Lord said to Moshe, Why dost thou cry to me? speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, that they go forward:

And the L-rd said to Moses: Why do you cry out to Me? [i.e., Why do you prolong your prayer when Israel are stepped in affliction?] Speak to the children of Israel and have them go forward [(There is nothing standing in their way. The merits of their fathers and their belief in Me will suffice to split the sea.)]

וְאַתָּ֞ה הָרֵ֣ם אֶֽת־מַטְּךָ֗ וּנְטֵ֧ה אֶת־יָדְךָ֛ עַל־הַיָּ֖ם וּבְקָעֵ֑הוּ וְיָבֹ֧אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיָּ֖ם בַּיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

And you [do as follows], raise your staff and extend your hand over the sea and split it. The B’nei Yisrael will then come [across] in the midst of the sea on dry land.

but lift up thy rod, and stretch out thy hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Yisra᾽el shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

The Egyptians will know that I am Adonoy when I am glorified through Pharaoh, his chariots and cavalry.

וַיִּסַּ֞ע מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים הַהֹלֵךְ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ מַחֲנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּסַּ֞ע עַמּ֤וּד הֶֽעָנָן֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃

The angel of Elohim moved [from its position] when it traveled in front of the camp of Israel, and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and it stood behind them.

And the angel of God, who went before the camp of Yisra᾽el, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And the angel of G-d (Elokim), who went before the camp of Israel, turned and went behind them [to separate the Israelites from the Egyptians and to receive the projectiles intended for them. ("Elokim" connotes justice. Israel was being judged at that moment for survival or for destruction along with the Egyptians)]. And [when it became dark and the pillar of fire supervened], the pillar of cloud turned from before them and stood behind them [to "darken things" for the Egyptians].


###### Exodus 14:20

וַיָּבֹ֞א בֵּ֣ין**׀** מַחֲנֵ֣ה מִצְרַ֗יִם וּבֵין֙ מַחֲנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְהִ֤י הֶֽעָנָן֙ וְהַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ וַיָּ֖אֶר אֶת־הַלָּ֑יְלָה וְלֹא־קָרַ֥ב זֶ֛ה אֶל־זֶ֖ה כׇּל־הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

It came between the Egyptian camp and the camp of Yisrael. There was the cloud and darkness [for the Egyptians] and [the pillar of fire] lit up the night. The camps did not approach each other all that night.

and it came between the camp of Miżrayim and the camp of Yisra᾽el; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

וַיֵּ֨ט מֹשֶׁ֣ה אֶת־יָדוֹ֮ עַל־הַיָּם֒ וַיּ֣וֹלֶךְ יְהֹוָ֣ה׀אֶת־הַ֠יָּ֠ם בְּר֨וּחַ קָדִ֤ים עַזָּה֙ כׇּל־הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם לֶחָרָבָ֑ה וַיִּבָּקְע֖וּ הַמָּֽיִם׃

Moshe extended his hand over the sea and Adonoy turned back the sea with a strong east wind [blowing] all through the night. He made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided.

And Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

And Moses stretched his hand over the sea, and the L-rd drove the sea with a strong east wind [(the strongest of the winds)] all the night, and He made the sea into dry land, and the waters [of all the world] were split.


###### Exodus 14:22

The B’nei Yisrael went into the midst of the sea on dry land. The waters were like a wall to them, to their right and to their left.
