###### Exodus 19:1

בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י לְצֵ֥את בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה בָּ֖אוּ מִדְבַּ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
In the third month of the Bnei Yisrael’s departure from the land of Egypt, on that very day they came to the desert of Sinai.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
In the third month, after the children of Yisra᾽el were gone out of the land of Miżrayim, the same day they came into the wilderness of Sinay.

On the third month of the exodus of the children of Israel from the land of Egypt, on this day [on the New Moon ("Let words of Torah always be 'new' to you, as if they were given this day")], they came to the desert of Sinai.


###### Exodus 19:2

וַיִּסְע֣וּ מֵרְפִידִ֗ים וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ מִדְבַּ֣ר סִינַ֔י וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַיִּֽחַן־שָׁ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נֶ֥גֶד הָהָֽר׃

They had journeyed from Rephidim and had come to the desert of Sinai, and camped in the desert. Yisrael camped there opposite the mountain.

For they were departed from Refidim, and were come to the desert of Sinay, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Yisra᾽el camped before the mountain.

And they journeyed from Refidim and they came to the desert of Sinai [(Just as they came to the desert of Sinai in a state of penitence, so they had left Refidim in a state of penitence.)] And Israel encamped there ["as one man, with one heart"] opposite [i.e., east of] the mountain.


###### Exodus 19:3

וּמֹשֶׁ֥ה עָלָ֖ה אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהֹוָה֙ מִן־הָהָ֣ר לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֤ה תֹאמַר֙ לְבֵ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֔ב וְתַגֵּ֖יד לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Moshe went up to [the Presence of] God, and Adonoy called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall say to the House of Yaakov, and tell to the Bnei Yisrael.

And Moshe went up to God, and the Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Ya῾aqov, and tell the children of Yisra᾽el;

And Moses went up to G-d [early in the morning on the second day] and the L-rd called to him from the mountain, saying: Thus shall you say [(in this mode and in this order)] to the house of Jacob [the women (To them, "say" it, "gently")], and speak (tagid) to the children of Israel [the men. (Lay down for them the things which are "tough as sinews" (giddin), the punishments and the details of the mitzvoth)].


###### Exodus 19:4

אַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְמִצְרָ֑יִם וָאֶשָּׂ֤א אֶתְכֶם֙ עַל־כַּנְפֵ֣י נְשָׁרִ֔ים וָאָבִ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃

‘You saw what I did to Egypt; and [how] I carried you on wings of eagles, and brought you to Me.

You have seen what I did to Miżrayim, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.

You have seen [with your own eyes] what I did to Egypt [on your behalf], and I bore you [(all of you in one day, from the places of your dispersion in the land of Goshen, to Ramses, assembling you for the Exodus)] on eagles' wings, [My angel protecting you from the projectiles of the foe (see 14:19-20), as an eagle, the highest flying of the birds, protects its young from other birds by carrying them on its wings], and I brought you to Me.


###### Exodus 19:5

וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־שָׁמ֤וֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ בְּקֹלִ֔י וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֑י וִהְיִ֨יתֶם לִ֤י סְגֻלָּה֙ מִכׇּל־הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים כִּי־לִ֖י כׇּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

And now if you listen diligently to My voice, and preserve My covenant; you shall be beloved before Me than My special treasure among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine.

Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own treasure from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine:

And now [(If you take it upon yourselves now, it will be "pleasant" for you in the future, all beginnings being difficult)], if you hearken to My voice and observe My covenant [that I shall make with you for the keeping of the Torah], then you shall be unto Me a select treasure, above all the (other) peoples; for all the earth [including the other peoples] is Mine, [(so that in choosing you it is clear that I am choosing you above them)].


###### Exodus 19:6

וְאַתֶּ֧ם תִּהְיוּ־לִ֛י מַמְלֶ֥כֶת כֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְג֣וֹי קָד֑וֹשׁ אֵ֚לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

You will be to Me a kingdom of kohanim, and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the Bnei Yisrael.”

וַיָּבֹ֣א מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֖א לְזִקְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיָּ֣שֶׂם לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖הוּ יְהֹוָֽה׃

Moshe came [back] and called for the elders of the people. He presented to them all these words which Adonoy had commanded him.

###### Exodus 19:8

וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ כׇל־הָעָ֤ם יַחְדָּו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה נַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וַיָּ֧שֶׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם אֶל־יְהֹוָֽה׃

All the people responded in unison, and said, “All that Adonoy has spoke, we will do.” Moshe brought the words of the people to Adonoy.

and all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord has spoken we will do. And Moshe reported the words of the people to the Lord.

And all the people answered together and they said: Whatever the L-rd has spoken we shall do. And Moses [on the third day] returned the words of the people to the L-rd, [Moses doing what was "proper," though in no way "needed."]


###### Exodus 19:9

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י בָּ֣א אֵלֶ֘יךָ֮ בְּעַ֣ב הֶֽעָנָן֒ בַּעֲב֞וּר יִשְׁמַ֤ע הָעָם֙ בְּדַבְּרִ֣י עִמָּ֔ךְ וְגַם־בְּךָ֖ יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ לְעוֹלָ֑ם וַיַּגֵּ֥ד מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם אֶל־יְהֹוָֽה׃

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Behold, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people will hear when I speak to you, and they will also believe in you forever.” Moshe told Adonoy the words of the people.

And the Lord said to Moshe, Lo, I come to thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moshe told the words of the people to the Lord.

And the L-rd said to Moses: Behold, I shall come to you in the thickness of the cloud so that the people hear when I speak with you, and also in you [and in the prophets that follow you] they will believe forever. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ לֵ֣ךְ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ם הַיּ֖וֹם וּמָחָ֑ר וְכִבְּס֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Go to the people, and sanctify [prepare] them today and tomorrow, and let them cleanse their clothing.

And the Lord said to Moshe, Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes,

###### Exodus 19:11

וְהָי֥וּ נְכֹנִ֖ים לַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י כִּ֣י**׀** בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֗י יֵרֵ֧ד יְהֹוָ֛ה לְעֵינֵ֥י כׇל־הָעָ֖ם עַל־הַ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

Let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day, Adonoy will descend on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.

and be ready by the third day: for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinay.

And have them be ready for the third day [the sixth of Sivan (and on the fifth he erected the altar and the twelve monuments (see 24:4)], for on the third day the L-rd will go down before the eyes of all the people [(the blind being cured)] on Mount Sinai.


###### Exodus 19:12

וְהִגְבַּלְתָּ֤ אֶת־הָעָם֙ סָבִ֣יב לֵאמֹ֔ר הִשָּׁמְר֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם עֲל֥וֹת בָּהָ֖ר וּנְגֹ֣עַ בְּקָצֵ֑הוּ כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּהָ֖ר מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃

Set bounds for the people around [the mountain], saying [to them], ‘Be careful not to go up the mountain, or [even] to touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will be put to death.

And thou shalt set bounds to the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that you go not up into the mountain, or touch the border of it: whoever touches the mountain shall be surely put to death:

And demarcate bounds for the people roundabout, [the bounds] "saying": Take heed unto yourselves not to go up on the mountain or to touch [even] its edge. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death.


###### Exodus 19:13

לֹא־תִגַּ֨ע בּ֜וֹ יָ֗ד כִּֽי־סָק֤וֹל יִסָּקֵל֙ אוֹ־יָרֹ֣ה יִיָּרֶ֔ה אִם־בְּהֵמָ֥ה אִם־אִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א יִחְיֶ֑ה בִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הַיֹּבֵ֔ל הֵ֖מָּה יַעֲל֥וּ בָהָֽר׃

Do not touch him [with your] hand, for he will be stoned or cast down. Neither man or beast will be allowed to live. When the [ram’s] horn is sounded with a long blast, they will [then] be permitted to go up on the mountain.”

no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the horn sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
No hand shall touch it; for stoned shall he be stoned or cast down shall he be cast down [(whence it is derived that those executed by stoning are cast down from the stoning site, two (men's) statures high)]. Whether beast or man, he shall not live. When the ram's horn sounds, [indicating the departure of the Shechinah], they may go up on the mountain.

וַיֵּ֧רֶד מֹשֶׁ֛ה מִן־הָהָ֖ר אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וַיְקַדֵּשׁ֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וַֽיְכַבְּס֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃

Moshe went down from the mountain to the people. He sanctified the people, and they immersed [themselves and] their clothing.

###### Exodus 19:15

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם הֱי֥וּ נְכֹנִ֖ים לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים אַֽל־תִּגְּשׁ֖וּ אֶל־אִשָּֽׁה׃

He said to the people, “Be ready by the end of three days. Do not come near a woman.

And he said to the people: Be ready in three days. Do not draw near to a woman [for three days, (so that the woman can immerse on the third day and be ready (i.e., pure) to receive the Torah, ejected semen being "neutralized" by the third day)].

וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת הַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְהִי֩ קֹלֹ֨ת וּבְרָקִ֜ים וְעָנָ֤ן כָּבֵד֙ עַל־הָהָ֔ר וְקֹ֥ל שֹׁפָ֖ר חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

It was on the third day, in the morning, that there was thunder and lightning. A heavy cloud was on the mountain, and there was a very loud sound of the shofar. All the people in the camp trembled.

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mountain, and the sound of a shofar exceeding loud; so that all the people in the camp trembled.

And it was, on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a heavy cloud upon the mountain, and the sound of the shofar, very strong, [the Holy One Blessed be He preceding them — what flesh and blood would not do (the "Rabbi" waiting for His disciple!)], and all the people in the camp trembled.

וַיּוֹצֵ֨א מֹשֶׁ֧ה אֶת־הָעָ֛ם לִקְרַ֥את הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים מִן־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ בְּתַחְתִּ֥ית הָהָֽר׃

Moshe brought the people toward [the Divine Presence of] God, [leading them] out of the camp. They stood at the foot of the mountain.

And Moshe brought the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

###### Exodus 19:18

וְהַ֤ר סִינַי֙ עָשַׁ֣ן כֻּלּ֔וֹ מִ֠פְּנֵ֠י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרַ֥ד עָלָ֛יו יְהֹוָ֖ה בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּ֤עַל עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָהָ֖ר מְאֹֽד׃

The entire Mount Sinai was enveloped with smoke, for Adonoy had descended upon it in fire. Its smoke rose like the smoke of a [lime] furnace and the entire mountain trembled violently.

And mount Sinay smoked in every part, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke of it ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

וַֽיְהִי֙ ק֣וֹל הַשֹּׁפָ֔ר הוֹלֵ֖ךְ וְחָזֵ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד מֹשֶׁ֣ה יְדַבֵּ֔ר וְהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יַעֲנֶ֥נּוּ בְקֽוֹל׃

The sound of the shofar grew louder and louder. Moshe spoke and God responded to him with [His] voice.

And then the voice of the shofar sounded louder and louder; Moshe speaks, and God answers him by a voice.

And the sound of the shofar grew exceedingly strong [(the reverse of the normal phenomenon)]. When Moses spoke [the last eight commandments (after they had heard the first two from the L-rd Himself)], G-d answered him [i.e., acceded to his request] regarding the [amplification of his] voice, [so that he could be heard by the multitude].

וַיֵּ֧רֶד יְהֹוָ֛ה עַל־הַ֥ר סִינַ֖י אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר וַיִּקְרָ֨א יְהֹוָ֧ה לְמֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־רֹ֥אשׁ הָהָ֖ר וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶֽׁה׃

Adonoy descended on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain, and Adonoy called to Moshe to come up to the top of the mountain, and Moshe went up.

And the Lord came down upon mount Sinay, on the top of the mountain: and the Lord called Moshe up to the top of the mount; and Moshe went up.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה רֵ֖ד הָעֵ֣ד בָּעָ֑ם פֶּן־יֶהֶרְס֤וּ אֶל־יְהֹוָה֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְנָפַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ רָֽב׃

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Go down and warn the people lest they break through [the boundary] toward [the Presence of] Adonoy in order to see; and many [of them] will die.

And the Lord said to Moshe, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish.

And the L-rd said to Moses: Go down and warn the people [(not to ascend the mountain)], lest they break [their bounds in aspiring] to the L-rd to see, [and they draw near to the side of the mountain], and there fall of them many, [(even the falling of one of them being regarded as the falling of "many")].
