###### Exodus 23:1

לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֖א שֵׁ֣מַע שָׁ֑וְא אַל־תָּ֤שֶׁת יָֽדְךָ֙ עִם־רָשָׁ֔ע לִהְיֹ֖ת עֵ֥ד חָמָֽס׃

Do not accept a false report. Do not join hands with a wicked man to be a corrupt [false] witness.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Do not bear a false report [(an exhortation against receiving slander and an exhortation to a judge not to hear the words of one litigant before the other arrives)]. Do not place your hand with an evildoer [who puts forth a false claim against his neighbor] to [promise him to] be a false witness [for him].


###### Exodus 23:2

לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרֵֽי־רַבִּ֖ים לְרָעֹ֑ת וְלֹא־תַעֲנֶ֣ה עַל־רִ֗ב לִנְטֹ֛ת אַחֲרֵ֥י רַבִּ֖ים לְהַטֹּֽת׃

Do not follow the majority to do evil. Do not respond with your opinion in a dispute [merely] to lean [toward one side]. It must be decided by the majority.

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to incline after a multitude to pervert justice:

Do not incline [in judgment] after many [wicked men, simply because they are many] for evil. And do not answer [the defendant, who solicits your judgment] in the dispute, to incline after [those] many [wicked ones] to incline [the judgment from the truth; but judge in accordance with the truth and "let the collar (of responsibility) hang on the neck of the many"].


###### Exodus 23:3

וְדָ֕ל לֹ֥א תֶהְדַּ֖ר בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃{ס}

Do not show favor [even] to the poor in his dispute.

###### Exodus 23:4

If you come across your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, bring it back to him.

If thou meet thy enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.

If you encounter the ox of your foe, or his ass, straying, return shall you return it to him.


###### Exodus 23:5

If you see the donkey of your enemy lying under its burden, and you might not want to help him, [but you should] make every effort to help him.

If thou see the ass of him that hates thee lying under its burden, and wouldst forbear to unload it, thou shalt surely unload it with him.

Would you see the ass of your foe lying under its burden and forbear to help [disburden] it? Help shall you help [unload it] with him [the owner].


###### Exodus 23:6

###### Exodus 23:7

Keep far away from anything false. Do not kill an innocent righteous man, for I will not acquit a wicked person.

Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

From a thing of falsehood keep far, and a clean one and a righteous one you shall not kill [("a clean one": If you have something to say in his favor after he has been sentenced to death, the case is to be reopened. "a righteous one": If you have something to say against him after he has been acquitted (i.e., found "righteous") the case is not to be re-opened)], for I will not find the wicked one righteous [(so that even if he has been erroneously acquitted, "the L-rd has many messengers")].


###### Exodus 23:8

וְשֹׁ֖חַד לֹ֣א תִקָּ֑ח כִּ֤י הַשֹּׁ֙חַד֙ יְעַוֵּ֣ר פִּקְחִ֔ים וִֽיסַלֵּ֖ף דִּבְרֵ֥י צַדִּיקִֽים׃

Do not accept bribery, for bribery blinds the clear-sighted, and perverts the words of justice.

And thou shalt take no bribe: for the bribe blinds the wise, and perverts the words of the righteous.

And a bribe you shall not take [even to judge truly], for a bribe blinds the wise and undermines righteous words [i.e., true judgments].


###### Exodus 23:9

וְגֵ֖ר לֹ֣א תִלְחָ֑ץ וְאַתֶּ֗ם יְדַעְתֶּם֙ אֶת־נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַגֵּ֔ר כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Do not oppress a stranger. You [should] know the soul [feelings] of the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for you know the heart of a stranger, seeing you were strangers in the land of Miżrayim.

You may sow your land for six years, and gather its crops.

###### Exodus 23:11

וְהַשְּׁבִיעִ֞ת תִּשְׁמְטֶ֣נָּה וּנְטַשְׁתָּ֗הּ וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ אֶבְיֹנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ וְיִתְרָ֕ם תֹּאכַ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה כֵּֽן־תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לְכַרְמְךָ֖ לְזֵיתֶֽךָ׃

But on the seventh [year] you must let it rest, and abandon it [by not eating its produce], and let the needy among your people eat it. What they leave over, the beasts of the field can eat. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive [trees].

but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave, the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy olive grove.

And the seventh year it shall lie fallow [and not be worked] and you shall leave it [i.e., you shall not eat of its produce after the time of removal (see Leviticus 25:7)], and the poor of your people shall eat it, and what they leave shall be eaten by the animals of the field [(Just as it need not be tithed for animals, so it need not be tithed for the poor — whence it is derived that ma'aser does not obtain in the sabbatical year)]. Thus shall you [also] do with your vineyard and with your olive grove, [(what precedes applying to a grain field)].

שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ וּבַיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י תִּשְׁבֹּ֑ת לְמַ֣עַן יָנ֗וּחַ שֽׁוֹרְךָ֙ וַחֲמֹרֶ֔ךָ וְיִנָּפֵ֥שׁ בֶּן־אֲמָתְךָ֖ וְהַגֵּֽר׃

You may do your work six days, but on the seventh day you must cease; so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave may be refreshed, and [also] the stranger.

Six days shall you do your work, and on the seventh day shall you rest [i.e., Shabbath is not superseded by Shevi'ith (which is also a commemoration of the creation)], so that there rest your ox and your ass [Give it "resting," i.e., allow it to tear grass from the earth and eat it], and there be refreshed the son of your maidservant [an uncircumcised Canaanite servant] and the stranger [a ger toshav, a "sojourning stranger" (one who shuns idolatry and observes the seven Noachide laws)].


###### Exodus 23:13

וּבְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם תִּשָּׁמֵ֑רוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙ לֹ֣א תַזְכִּ֔ירוּ לֹ֥א יִשָּׁמַ֖ע עַל־פִּֽיךָ׃

Preserve everything that I have said to you. Do not mention the name of other gods. You must not cause it to be heard through your mouth.

And all that I have spoken to you, you shall observe [(all positive commandments are hereby "affixed" with an exhortation)]. And the name of other gods you shall not mention [One should not say to another: "Wait for me near that idol" (mentioning its name) or "Stand with me on the festival of that idol"]; it shall not be heard [from the gentile] upon your mouth [i.e., at your instigation. (Do not enter into partnership with a gentile, lest he swear by his god (in the instance of a dispute) in which instance you are an accessory to the mentioning of idolatry.)]

שָׁלֹ֣שׁ רְגָלִ֔ים תָּחֹ֥ג לִ֖י בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃

Three times a year you are to celebrate with Me.

אֶת־חַ֣ג הַמַּצּוֹת֮ תִּשְׁמֹר֒ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִים֩ תֹּאכַ֨ל מַצּ֜וֹת כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֗ךָ לְמוֹעֵד֙ חֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽאָבִ֔יב כִּי־ב֖וֹ יָצָ֣אתָ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹא־יֵרָא֥וּ פָנַ֖י רֵיקָֽם׃

You must keep the festival of Matzos. You must eat matzos for seven days, as I have commanded you. [This festival must be celebrated] at the appointed time, during the month when the grain is ripened, for in it [at this time] you went out of Egypt. Do not appear before My Presence empty-handed.

וְחַ֤ג הַקָּצִיר֙ בִּכּוּרֵ֣י מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּזְרַ֖ע בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וְחַ֤ג הָֽאָסִף֙ בְּצֵ֣את הַשָּׁנָ֔ה בְּאׇסְפְּךָ֥ אֶֽת־מַעֲשֶׂ֖יךָ מִן־הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

[You must also keep] the Festival of Harvest, [with bringing bikurim] the first fruits of your labor, which you planted in the field; [also] the Festival of Ingathering, at the close of the year, when you gather in [the fruits of] your labor from the field.

(Numbers 28:26)], and the festival of the ingathering [Succoth] at the going out of the year, when you gather your labor from the field [against the rain].


###### Exodus 23:17

שָׁלֹ֥שׁ פְּעָמִ֖ים בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה יֵרָאֶה֙ כׇּל־זְכ֣וּרְךָ֔ אֶל־פְּנֵ֖י הָאָדֹ֥ן׀יְהֹוָֽה׃

Three times a year, every male among you must appear before the Presence of the Master, Adonoy.

###### Exodus 23:18

לֹֽא־תִזְבַּ֥ח עַל־חָמֵ֖ץ דַּם־זִבְחִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָלִ֥ין חֵֽלֶב־חַגִּ֖י עַד־בֹּֽקֶר׃

You must not sacrifice—while chometz is present—My [Pesach] sacrifice. You must not allow to remain overnight—the fat of My festival-offering—until morning.

Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.

You shall not offer alongside chametz the blood of My sacrifice [i.e., Do not slaughter the Pesach offering on the fourteenth of Nissan until the chametz has been removed], and there shall not remain [unplaced on the altar] the fat of My festival offering until morning.


###### Exodus 23:19

רֵאשִׁ֗ית בִּכּוּרֵי֙ אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔ תָּבִ֕יא בֵּ֖ית יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לֹֽא־תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל גְּדִ֖י בַּחֲלֵ֥ב אִמּֽוֹ׃{פ}

The beginning of the first fruits of your land must be brought to the House of Adonoy, your God. You must not cook a young animal in the milk of its mother.

The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring to the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.

The first of the first-fruits of your land [even in the sabbatical year] you shall bring to the house of the L-rd your G-d. You shall not cook a kid [any young, tender animal] in its mother's milk. [This is written three times in the Torah: (here, 34:26, and Deuteronomy 14:21), once to forbid eating (milk and meat together), once to forbid derivation of benefit, and once to forbid cooking.]

הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י שֹׁלֵ֤חַ מַלְאָךְ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לִשְׁמׇרְךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ וְלַהֲבִ֣יאֲךָ֔ אֶל־הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֲכִנֹֽתִי׃

Behold, I will send an angel before you, to guard you on the way, and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.

###### Exodus 23:21

הִשָּׁ֧מֶר מִפָּנָ֛יו וּשְׁמַ֥ע בְּקֹל֖וֹ אַל־תַּמֵּ֣ר בּ֑וֹ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִשָּׂא֙ לְפִשְׁעֲכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שְׁמִ֖י בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃

Be careful in his presence and heed [obey] his voice. Do not rebel against him; for he cannot bear [pardon] your transgression, as My Name is in him.

Take heed of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.

###### Exodus 23:22

כִּ֣י אִם־שָׁמ֤וֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע֙ בְּקֹל֔וֹ וְעָשִׂ֕יתָ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְאָֽיַבְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ וְצַרְתִּ֖י אֶת־צֹרְרֶֽיךָ׃

But if you truly listen to [obey] his voice, and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and attack those who attack you.

But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy to thy enemies, and an adversary to thy adversaries.

###### Exodus 23:23

כִּֽי־יֵלֵ֣ךְ מַלְאָכִי֮ לְפָנֶ֒יךָ֒ וֶהֱבִֽיאֲךָ֗ אֶל־הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י וְהִכְחַדְתִּֽיו׃

My messenger will go before you, and will bring you into [the land of] the Emorites, the Chittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, Chivites, and the Yevusites, and I will then annihilate them.

For my angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in to the Emori, and the Ḥitti, and the Perizzi, and the Kena῾ani, and the Ḥivvi, and the Yevusi; and I will cut them off.

For My angel shall go before you, and he will bring you to the Emori, and the Chitti and the Perizi and the Canaani and the Chivi and the Yevussi, and I will annihilate them.
