## Exodus Chapter 29

###### Exodus 29:1

וְזֶ֨ה הַדָּבָ֜ר אֲשֶֽׁר־תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לָהֶ֛ם לְקַדֵּ֥שׁ אֹתָ֖ם לְכַהֵ֣ן לִ֑י לְ֠קַ֠ח פַּ֣ר אֶחָ֧ד בֶּן־בָּקָ֛ר וְאֵילִ֥ם שְׁנַ֖יִם תְּמִימִֽם׃

This is what you must do for them to consecrate them to serve Me [as kohanim]. Take one young bull and two unblemished rams,

And this is the thing that thou shalt do to them to hallow them, to minister to me in the priest’s office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,

וְלֶ֣חֶם מַצּ֗וֹת וְחַלֹּ֤ת מַצֹּת֙ בְּלוּלֹ֣ת בַּשֶּׁ֔מֶן וּרְקִיקֵ֥י מַצּ֖וֹת מְשֻׁחִ֣ים בַּשָּׁ֑מֶן סֹ֥לֶת חִטִּ֖ים תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה אֹתָֽם׃

[also] unleavened bread, unleavened loaves mixed with [olive] oil. and unleavened wafers anointed with oil. You must make them with fine wheat flour.

and unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened mingled with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them.

And [(ten of each of the following kinds:)] matzah bread [(later referred to as "challah of oil bread" (23) because he puts as much oil into it as into the loaves and wafers combined)], and matzah challoth mixed with oil [when they are still flour], and matzah wafers anointed with oil. [After they are baked, he anoints them in the shape of the Greek letter chi, similar to our nun.] Of fine wheat flour shall you make them.

Place them in one basket and bring them in the basket [along] with the young bull and the two rams.

###### Exodus 29:4

וְאֶת־אַהֲרֹ֤ן וְאֶת־בָּנָיו֙ תַּקְרִ֔יב אֶל־פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְרָחַצְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּמָּֽיִם׃

Bring Aharon and his sons near to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and immerse them in the water.

###### Exodus 29:5

וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ אֶת־הַבְּגָדִ֗ים וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֤ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶת־הַכֻּתֹּ֔נֶת וְאֵת֙ מְעִ֣יל הָאֵפֹ֔ד וְאֶת־הָאֵפֹ֖ד וְאֶת־הַחֹ֑שֶׁן וְאָפַדְתָּ֣ ל֔וֹ בְּחֵ֖שֶׁב הָאֵפֹֽד׃

Take the garments and clothe Aharon with the undershirt, the robe of the eiphod, the eiphod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the belt of the eiphod.

And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aharon the coat, and the robe of the efod, and the efod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the finely wrought girdle of the efod:

###### Exodus 29:6

וְשַׂמְתָּ֥ הַמִּצְנֶ֖פֶת עַל־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וְנָתַתָּ֛ אֶת־נֵ֥זֶר הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ עַל־הַמִּצְנָֽפֶת׃

Set the turban upon his head and place the sacred diadem upon the turban.

and thou shalt put the mitre on his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre.

Take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.

###### Exodus 29:9

וְחָגַרְתָּ֩ אֹתָ֨ם אַבְנֵ֜ט אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּבָנָ֗יו וְחָבַשְׁתָּ֤ לָהֶם֙ מִגְבָּעֹ֔ת וְהָיְתָ֥ה לָהֶ֛ם כְּהֻנָּ֖ה לְחֻקַּ֣ת עוֹלָ֑ם וּמִלֵּאתָ֥ יַֽד־אַהֲרֹ֖ן וְיַד־בָּנָֽיו׃

Gird them—Aharon and his sons—with sash-belts, and bind turban-like hats for them, and the priesthood shall be for them an everlasting statute. Thus you shall install Aharon and his sons.

And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aharon and his sons, and put the turbans on them: and the priest’s office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aharon and his sons.

And you shall gird them with an avneit, Aaron and his sons, and you shall bind migbaoth upon them, and the kehunah (the priesthood) shall be for them an everlasting statute; and you shall fill the hand of Aaron and the hand of his sons. [i.e., You shall thereby invest them into the priesthood.]

###### Exodus 29:12

וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ מִדַּ֣ם הַפָּ֔ר וְנָתַתָּ֛ה עַל־קַרְנֹ֥ת הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ בְּאֶצְבָּעֶ֑ךָ וְאֶת־כׇּל־הַדָּ֣ם תִּשְׁפֹּ֔ךְ אֶל־יְס֖וֹד הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

Take of the blood of the bull and put it on the horn-like elevations of the altar with your finger, and pour all the [remaining] blood at the base of the altar.

And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock, and put it on the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour all the blood beside the bottom of the altar.

###### Exodus 29:13

וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֗ אֶֽת־כׇּל־הַחֵ֘לֶב֮ הַֽמְכַסֶּ֣ה אֶת־הַקֶּ֒רֶב֒ וְאֵ֗ת הַיֹּתֶ֙רֶת֙ עַל־הַכָּבֵ֔ד וְאֵת֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י הַכְּלָיֹ֔ת וְאֶת־הַחֵ֖לֶב אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲלֵיהֶ֑ן וְהִקְטַרְתָּ֖ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחָה׃

Take all the fat that covers the inner organs, the lobe that is with the liver, the two kidneys with the fat that is upon them, and burn them on the altar.

And thou shalt take all the fat that covers the inwards, and the appendage that is above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar.

And you shall take all of the fat that covers the innards [i.e., the stomach membrane] and the lobe [the liver membrane] with [some of] the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is upon them, and you shall smoke (them) upon the altar.


###### Exodus 29:14

וְאֶת־בְּשַׂ֤ר הַפָּר֙ וְאֶת־עֹר֣וֹ וְאֶת־פִּרְשׁ֔וֹ תִּשְׂרֹ֣ף בָּאֵ֔שׁ מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה חַטָּ֖את הֽוּא׃

[However] the flesh of the bull, its skin, and its intestinal waste, you shall burn with fire outside the camp. It is a sin-offering.

But the flesh of the bullock, and its skin, and its dung, shalt thou burn with fire outside the camp: it is a sin offering.

And you shall slaughter the ram and you shall take its blood and you shall toss it [from a vessel] on the [corners of the] altar [so that the blood is seen on both sides of each corner] roundabout. [He tosses it on two opposite diagonal corners, so that the blood is seen on all four sides of the altar.]

וְאֶ֨ת־הָאַ֔יִל תְּנַתֵּ֖חַ לִנְתָחָ֑יו וְרָחַצְתָּ֤ קִרְבּוֹ֙ וּכְרָעָ֔יו וְנָתַתָּ֥ עַל־נְתָחָ֖יו וְעַל־רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

Cut the ram into pieces. [Then] wash off its intestines and its legs and place them with its cut up pieces and its head.

###### Exodus 29:18

וְהִקְטַרְתָּ֤ אֶת־כׇּל־הָאַ֙יִל֙ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה עֹלָ֥ה ה֖וּא לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה רֵ֣יחַ נִיח֔וֹחַ אִשֶּׁ֥ה לַיהֹוָ֖ה הֽוּא׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
Burn the entire ram on the altar, it is a burnt-offering to Adonoy, a pleasing fragrance, a fire-offering to Adonoy.

And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering to the Lord: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire to the Lord.

And you shall smoke the entire ram upon the altar. It is a burnt-offering to the L-rd, a fragrance that is pleasing [in that His will was done], a fire-offering [i.e., the smoking of the limbs on the fire] to the L-rd.


###### Exodus 29:19

וְשָׁחַטְתָּ֣ אֶת־הָאַ֗יִל וְלָקַחְתָּ֤ מִדָּמוֹ֙ וְנָֽתַתָּ֡ה עַל־תְּנוּךְ֩ אֹ֨זֶן אַהֲרֹ֜ן וְעַל־תְּנ֨וּךְ אֹ֤זֶן בָּנָיו֙ הַיְמָנִ֔ית וְעַל־בֹּ֤הֶן יָדָם֙ הַיְמָנִ֔ית וְעַל־בֹּ֥הֶן רַגְלָ֖ם הַיְמָנִ֑ית וְזָרַקְתָּ֧ אֶת־הַדָּ֛ם עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ סָבִֽיב׃

Slaughter the ram, and take of its blood, and place it on the tip of Aharon’s right ear, and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, and on the thumb of their right hands, and on the big toe of their right feet. Sprinkle the [remaining] blood all around the altar.

Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of its blood, and put it upon the tip of Aharon’s right ear, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.

And you shall slaughter the ram, and you shall take of its blood and you shall place it on the t'nuch of the ear [the cartilage of the middle section inside the ear] of Aaron, and on the t'nuch of the ear of his sons — the right (ear) — and on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. And you shall toss the blood on the altar roundabout.

וְלָקַחְתָּ֞ מִן־הַדָּ֨ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַֽל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֘חַ֮ וּמִשֶּׁ֣מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה֒ וְהִזֵּיתָ֤ עַֽל־אַהֲרֹן֙ וְעַל־בְּגָדָ֔יו וְעַל־בָּנָ֛יו וְעַל־בִּגְדֵ֥י בָנָ֖יו אִתּ֑וֹ וְקָדַ֥שׁ הוּא֙ וּבְגָדָ֔יו וּבָנָ֛יו וּבִגְדֵ֥י בָנָ֖יו אִתּֽוֹ׃

Take of the blood that is on the altar, and of the anointing oil and sprinkle it upon Aharon and his garments, and upon his sons and their garments as well. Thus he and his garments will be consecrated, along with his sons and his son’s garments.

וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ מִן־הָ֠אַ֠יִל הַחֵ֨לֶב וְהָֽאַלְיָ֜ה וְאֶת־הַחֵ֣לֶב**׀** הַֽמְכַסֶּ֣ה אֶת־הַקֶּ֗רֶב וְאֵ֨ת יֹתֶ֤רֶת הַכָּבֵד֙ וְאֵ֣ת**׀** שְׁתֵּ֣י הַכְּלָיֹ֗ת וְאֶת־הַחֵ֙לֶב֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲלֵיהֶ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת שׁ֣וֹק הַיָּמִ֑ין כִּ֛י אֵ֥יל מִלֻּאִ֖ים הֽוּא׃

Take from the ram the [intestinal] fat, the broad tail, the fat that covers the inner organs, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right shoulder, for it is a ram of a completion-offering.

Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the fat tail, and the fat that covers the inwards, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration:

And you shall take from the ram the fat [of the small intestines, or (according to another opinion) the stomach], and the fat-tail, [from the kidneys and below], and the fat that covers the innards, and the lobe with [some of] the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them and the right thigh [(This is the only instance of the smoking of the right thigh with the eimurim [the consecrated parts])]; for it is the ram of miluim (completeness) [a peace-offering (shelamim), complete in that all share in it: the altar, the officiator (in this instance, Moses, who receives the breast), and the owners (in this instance, Aaron and his sons, who eat the rest of it)].


###### Exodus 29:23
