###### Exodus 33:1

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ לֵ֣ךְ עֲלֵ֣ה מִזֶּ֔ה אַתָּ֣ה וְהָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶֽעֱלִ֖יתָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֶל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִ֠שְׁבַּ֠עְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֨ם לְיִצְחָ֤ק וּֽלְיַעֲקֹב֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְזַרְעֲךָ֖ אֶתְּנֶֽנָּה׃

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, “Leave, go up from this [place]—you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt—to the land of which I swore to Avraham, to Yitzchok and to Yaakov, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’

And the Lord said to Moshe, Depart, and go up from here, thou and the people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Miżrayim, to the land of which I swore to Avraham, to Yiżĥaq, and to Ya῾aqov, saying, To thy seed will I give it:

And the L-rd said to Moses: Go, ascend from here [(Eretz Yisrael is the highest of all lands)], you and the people [("the people," as opposed to "your people" (see 32:7)], whom you brought up from the land of Egypt to the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying: "To your seed shall I give it."

וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֥י לְפָנֶ֖יךָ מַלְאָ֑ךְ וְגֵֽרַשְׁתִּ֗י אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י וְהַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃

I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Emorites, the Chitites, the Perizites, the Chivites, and the Yevusites.

###### Exodus 33:3

אֶל־אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א אֶֽעֱלֶ֜ה בְּקִרְבְּךָ֗ כִּ֤י עַם־קְשֵׁה־עֹ֙רֶף֙ אַ֔תָּה פֶּן־אֲכֶלְךָ֖ בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃

[You will then] enter a land flowing with milk and honey. [I am sending an angel] for I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people and I may destroy you along the way.”

into a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee on the way.

[And you shall bring them up] to a land flowing with milk and honey. [I tell you that I will send an angel before you] for I shall not ascend in your midst. For you are a stiff-necked people, [and when My shechinah is in your midst and you rebel against Me, My wrath is intensified.] (I shall not ascend in your midst, then,) lest I destroy you on the way.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע הָעָ֗ם אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הָרָ֛ע הַזֶּ֖ה וַיִּתְאַבָּ֑לוּ וְלֹא־שָׁ֛תוּ אִ֥ישׁ עֶדְי֖וֹ עָלָֽיו׃

When the people heard this bad news they mourned and no man wore his ornaments [crowns].

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man put on him his ornaments.

And the people heard this evil thing [(that the shechinah would not abide with them)] and they mourned, and none of them put on his adornment [(the crowns that were bequeathed them at Chorev when they said (24:7): "We shall do and we shall hear.")]

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אַתֶּ֣ם עַם־קְשֵׁה־עֹ֔רֶף רֶ֧גַע אֶחָ֛ד אֶֽעֱלֶ֥ה בְקִרְבְּךָ֖ וְכִלִּיתִ֑יךָ וְעַתָּ֗ה הוֹרֵ֤ד עֶדְיְךָ֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ וְאֵדְעָ֖ה מָ֥ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Say to the B’nei Yisrael, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. Were I to go up among you for one moment, I would destroy you. Now remove your ornaments and I know what to do with you.’”

For the Lord had said to Moshe, Say to the children of Yisra᾽el, You are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee for a moment and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do to thee.

And the L-rd said to Moses: Say to the children of Israel: You are a stiff-necked people. If I ascended in your midst [and you rebelled against Me in your stiff-neckedness, I would rage against you for] one instant and I would annihilate you. And now, [with this punishment you shall be smitten immediately — that you] remove your adornment from you, and [(as to the balance of your punishment)], I shall know what to do to you.

וַיִּֽתְנַצְּל֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־עֶדְיָ֖ם מֵהַ֥ר חוֹרֵֽב׃

The B’nei Yisrael took off their ornaments that they had [worn] at Mount Chorev.

And the children of Yisra᾽el stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Ḥorev.

And the children of Israel divested themselves of their adornment [which had been bequeathed them] at Mount Chorev.

וּמֹשֶׁה֩ יִקַּ֨ח אֶת־הָאֹ֜הֶל וְנָֽטָה־ל֣וֹ**׀** מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה הַרְחֵק֙ מִן־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְקָ֥רָא ל֖וֹ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְהָיָה֙ כׇּל־מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ יְהֹוָ֔ה יֵצֵא֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

Moshe would take the tent and set it up outside the camp, a distance from the camp, and he called it [the] Tent of Meeting. Everyone who sought Adonoy, would go out to the Tent of Meeting that was outside the camp.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Moshe would take the Tent, and pitch it outside the camp, afar off from the camp, and he called it the Tent of Meeting. And it came to pass, that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.

And Moses [from that sin onwards] would take the tent (his tent) and pitch it outside the camp [saying: "He who is banished from the Teacher is banished from the student (Moses)"], far from the camp [(two thousand cubits)], and he would call it "the tent of meeting" [for seekers of Torah.] And all who sought the L-rd [(whence it is derived that "soliciting an elder is like paying attendance upon the shechinah")] would go out to the tent of meeting that was outside the camp.

וְהָיָ֗ה כְּצֵ֤את מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־הָאֹ֔הֶל יָק֙וּמוּ֙ כׇּל־הָעָ֔ם וְנִ֨צְּב֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֣תַח אׇהֳל֑וֹ וְהִבִּ֙יטוּ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַד־בֹּא֖וֹ הָאֹֽהֱלָה׃

Whenever Moshe went out to the tent, all the people would rise, and each person would stand at the entrance of his tent; and they would gaze after Moshe, until he had gone into the tent.

And it came to pass, when Moshe went out to the Tent, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moshe until he was gone into the Tent.

And it was, when Moses went out [to go] to the tent, that all the people would rise, and each one would stand at the door of his tent and look after Moses [out of respect, and not sit down] until he had come to the tent.


###### Exodus 33:9

וְהָיָ֗ה כְּבֹ֤א מֹשֶׁה֙ הָאֹ֔הֱלָה יֵרֵד֙ עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן וְעָמַ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וְדִבֶּ֖ר עִם־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

When Moshe had gone into the tent, the Pillar of Cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and [Adonoy] would speak to Moshe.

And it came to pass, as Moshe entered the Tent, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the Tent, and one talked with Moshe.

And it was, when Moses came to the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and He would speak, with Moses [hearing].


###### Exodus 33:10

וְרָאָ֤ה כׇל־הָעָם֙ אֶת־עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן עֹמֵ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וְקָ֤ם כׇּל־הָעָם֙ וְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֥תַח אׇהֳלֽוֹ׃

When all the people saw the Pillar of Cloud, standing at the entrance of the tent; all the people rose and prostrated themselves, each man at the entrance of his tent.

And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the door of the Tent: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

וְדִבֶּ֨ר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְדַבֵּ֥ר אִ֖ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְשָׁב֙ אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וּמְשָׁ֨רְת֜וֹ יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ בִּן־נוּן֙ נַ֔עַר לֹ֥א יָמִ֖ישׁ מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֹֽהֶל׃{פ}

Adonoy spoke to Moshe face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. and [Moshe then] would return to the camp, but his youthful attendant, Yehoshua, son of Nun, did not leave the tent.

And the Lord spoke to Moshe face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he turned back to the camp: but his servant Yehoshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart out of the Tent.

And the L-rd would speak, with Moses [hearing], face to face, as a man speaks with his fellow. And [after the L-rd's speaking], he would return to the camp [and teach the elders what he had learned. (Moses followed this practice from Yom Kippur until the mishkan was erected.)] And his attendant, Joshua the son of Nun, a youth, would not depart from within the tent.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶל־יְהֹוָ֗ה רְ֠אֵ֠ה אַתָּ֞ה אֹמֵ֤ר אֵלַי֙ הַ֚עַל אֶת־הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַתָּה֙ לֹ֣א הֽוֹדַעְתַּ֔נִי אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־תִּשְׁלַ֖ח עִמִּ֑י וְאַתָּ֤ה אָמַ֙רְתָּ֙ יְדַעְתִּ֣יךָֽ בְשֵׁ֔ם וְגַם־מָצָ֥אתָ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינָֽי׃

Moshe said to Adonoy, “Behold, You say to me, ‘Lead this people up [to the land of Canaan],’ but You did not let me know whom You would send with me. You [also] said, ‘I know you by name and you have also found favor in My eyes.’

And Moshe said to the Lord, See, thou sayst to me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found favour in my sight.

And Moses said to the L-rd: See, You say to me: "Bring up this people," and You did not apprise me whom You would send with me. [Your sending an angel is not acceptable to me.] And You said [see 19:9]: "I have known you by name" [i.e., I have singled you out from others], "and you have also found favor in My eyes."

וְעַתָּ֡ה אִם־נָא֩ מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֜ן בְּעֵינֶ֗יךָ הוֹדִעֵ֤נִי נָא֙ אֶת־דְּרָכֶ֔ךָ וְאֵדָ֣עֲךָ֔ לְמַ֥עַן אֶמְצָא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וּרְאֵ֕ה כִּ֥י עַמְּךָ֖ הַגּ֥וֹי הַזֶּֽה׃

Now, please, if I have found favor in Your eyes, please let me know Your way, so that I will know You, that I may find favor in Your eyes; and [also] consider that this nation is [indeed] Your people.”

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thy sight, show me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find favour in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

And now, if I have, indeed, found favor in Your eyes, make known to me Your ways [i.e., the reward for finding favor in Your eyes], so that I know You [i.e., Your measure of reward], so that I find [what the nature of the reward is for finding] favor in Your eyes. And see that this nation is Your people, [and I cannot see myself being rewarded if they are not].

וַיֹּאמַ֑ר פָּנַ֥י יֵלֵ֖כוּ וַהֲנִחֹ֥תִי לָֽךְ׃

He [God] said, “My Presence will go [with you] and I will accede to you[r request].”

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

And He said: My face [i.e., I Myself] shall go [and not an angel], and I shall give you rest.


###### Exodus 33:15

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו אִם־אֵ֤ין פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ הֹלְכִ֔ים אַֽל־תַּעֲלֵ֖נוּ מִזֶּֽה׃

And he [Moshe] said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go [with us] do not make us leave from this [place].

And he said to him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up from here.

וּבַמֶּ֣ה**׀** יִוָּדַ֣ע אֵפ֗וֹא כִּֽי־מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲנִ֣י וְעַמֶּ֔ךָ הֲל֖וֹא בְּלֶכְתְּךָ֣ עִמָּ֑נוּ וְנִפְלִ֙ינוּ֙ אֲנִ֣י וְעַמְּךָ֔ מִכׇּ֨ל־הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃{פ}

And how will it be known. that I have found favor in Your eyes—I and Your people—only if You go with us, so that we will be distinguished—I and Your people— from every [other] people on the face of the earth.”

For in what shall it be known here that I and thy people have found favour in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be differentiated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

For how, otherwise, will it be known that I and Your people have found favor in Your eyes? Is it not by Your going with us? And [I have yet another request: that You not repose Your shechinah on the nations of the world so that] I and Your people be distinct from all the people on the face of the earth.


###### Exodus 33:17

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֛ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֑ה כִּֽי־מָצָ֤אתָ חֵן֙ בְּעֵינַ֔י וָאֵדָעֲךָ֖ בְּשֵֽׁם׃

Adonoy said to Moshe, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken, for you have found favor in My eyes, and I know you by name.”

And the Lord said to Moshe, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found favour in my sight, and I know thee by name.

###### Exodus 33:18

וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַרְאֵ֥נִי נָ֖א אֶת־כְּבֹדֶֽךָ׃

He [Moshe] then said, “Please grant me a vision of Your Glory.”

And he said, I pray thee, show me thy glory.

###### Exodus 33:19

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אֲנִ֨י אַעֲבִ֤יר כׇּל־טוּבִי֙ עַל־פָּנֶ֔יךָ וְקָרָ֧אתִֽי בְשֵׁ֛ם יְהֹוָ֖ה לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וְחַנֹּתִי֙ אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָחֹ֔ן וְרִחַמְתִּ֖י אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲרַחֵֽם׃

He [God] said, “I will cause all My goodness to pass before your presence, and will proclaim the Name, Adonoy, in your presence. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will be compassionate to whom I will be compassionate.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

And He said: I shall cause all of My goodness to pass before you [when you are concealed in the cave], and I shall call in the name of the L-rd before you [to teach you the order of imploring mercy even when the merit of the fathers (zcuth avoth) no longer obtains. And you teach Israel to pray according to that order ("the Thirteen Attributes") and their prayers for mercy will thereby be granted]; and I shall be gracious when I desire to be so, and I shall be merciful when I desire to be so, [(but later (34:10) He assured Moses that "the Thirteen Attributes" are never unavailing)].


###### Exodus 33:20

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א תוּכַ֖ל לִרְאֹ֣ת אֶת־פָּנָ֑י כִּ֛י לֹֽא־יִרְאַ֥נִי הָאָדָ֖ם וָחָֽי׃

And He said, “You cannot see My Presence, for no man can see My Presence and live.”

And he said, Thou canst not see my face; for no man shall see me, and live.

And He said: You shall not be permitted to see My face [even when I pass all My good before you]; for no man can see Me and live.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָ֔ה הִנֵּ֥ה מָק֖וֹם אִתִּ֑י וְנִצַּבְתָּ֖ עַל־הַצּֽוּר׃
