###### Ezra 9:1
[Ezra 9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:1)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Yisra᾽el, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Kena῾ani, the Ḥitti, the Perizzi, the Yevusi, the ῾Ammoni, the Mo᾽avi, the Mizri, and the Emori.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And when these [words (i.e., their relating of the king's edicts)] were concluded, the chiefs [of Israel] drew near to me and said: The people have not separated — Israel, and the priests, and the Levites — from the people of the lands, in their abominations — (those of) the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizites, the Yevusites, the Ammonites, the Moavites, the Egyptians, and the Emorites.

###### Ezra 9:2
[Ezra 9:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:2)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the peoples of those lands: indeed, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this crime.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and the holy seed [i.e., Israel] have intermingled with the people of the lands, and the hand of the chiefs and their deputies has been in this faithlessness first.

###### Ezra 9:3
[Ezra 9:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:3)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down appalled.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my cloak, and I tore out the hair of my head and my beard, and I sat desolate.

###### Ezra 9:4
[Ezra 9:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:4)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Yisra᾽el, because of the transgression of those who had been carried away gathered around me; and I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And there gathered unto me all who were zealous for the words of the G-d of Israel, over the faithlessness of the exile, and I sat desolate until the [(daily)] evening offering.

###### Ezra 9:5
[Ezra 9:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:5)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And at the evening sacrifice I arose from my fasting; and my garment and my mantle being rent, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands to the Lord my God,

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And at the evening offering I rose from my fast [(not having eaten that day)], my garment and my cloak rent, and I bowed down on my knees, and spread out my hands to the L-rd my G-d.

###### Ezra 9:6
[Ezra 9:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:6)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to Thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guilt has mounted to the heavens.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And I said: My G-d, I am ashamed and abashed to lift, my G-d, my face to You, for our transgressions have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown until the heavens.

###### Ezra 9:7
[Ezra 9:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:7)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is this day.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
From the days of our fathers we are in [(a state of)] great guilt, until this [very] day. And because of our transgressions, we have been delivered — our kings and our priests — into the hand of the kings of the land, to the sword, to captivity, to spoil, and to shamefacedness as [(we see)] of this day, [(the ten tribes having been exiled, and many of the exiles remaining yet in Bavel.)]

###### Ezra 9:8
[Ezra 9:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:8)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And now for a little moment grace has been shown by the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a secure anchorage in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And, for the moment, we have been granted favor by the L-rd our G-d, to leave us a remnant and to give us a hold in His holy place, that our G-d enlighten our eyes and give us a little life in our servitude.

###### Ezra 9:9
[Ezra 9:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:9)

כִּֽי־עֲבָדִ֣ים אֲנַ֔חְנוּ וּ֨בְעַבְדֻתֵ֔נוּ לֹ֥א עֲזָבָ֖נוּ אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַֽיַּט־עָלֵ֣ינוּ חֶ֡סֶד לִפְנֵי֩ מַלְכֵ֨י פָרַ֜ס לָֽתֶת־לָ֣נוּ מִֽחְיָ֗ה לְרוֹמֵ֞ם אֶת־בֵּ֤ית אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּלְהַעֲמִ֣יד אֶת־חׇרְבֹתָ֔יו וְלָֽתֶת־לָ֣נוּ גָדֵ֔ר בִּֽיהוּדָ֖ה וּבִירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For we were slaves; yet our God did not forsake us in our slavery but gave us grace in the sight of the kings of Paras; to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Yehuda and in Yerushalayim.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
For we are servants [(to Darius, king of Paras)], and in our servitude, our G-d has not forsaken us. For He has bestowed favor upon us before the kings of Paras, to give us the wherewithal to exalt the house of our G-d and to restore its ruins, and to give us a "fence" [(for the observance of His mitzvoth)] in Judah and Jerusalem.

###### Ezra 9:10
[Ezra 9:10](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:10)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken Thy commandments,

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And now, what can we say, our G-d, after this, that we have forsaken Your mitzvoth

###### Ezra 9:11
[Ezra 9:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:11)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
which Thou hast commanded by Thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, into which you go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations, for they have filled it from one end to the other with their uncleanness.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
that You commanded through Your servants the prophets, saying: "The land that you are coming to inherit is a defiled land, in the defilement of the people of the lands, in their abominations, with which they have filled it from mouth to mouth in their defilement.

###### Ezra 9:12
[Ezra 9:12](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:12)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Now therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their welfare for ever: that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And now, Your daughters do not give to their sons, and their daughters do not take for your sons, and do not seek their peace and their good forever. So that you take hold [(in the land)] and eat of the good of the land and bequeath it to your sons forever."

###### Ezra 9:13
[Ezra 9:13](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:13)

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And after all that which has come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, seeing that Thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And after all [these evils] that have come upon us because of our evil acts and our great guilt, [now] that You, our G-d, have kept [Yourself from exacting punishment], beneath the deserts of our transgressions, and You have left us such a remnant,

###### Ezra 9:14
[Ezra 9:14](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:14)

הֲנָשׁוּב֙ לְהָפֵ֣ר מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ וּ֨לְהִתְחַתֵּ֔ן בְּעַמֵּ֥י הַתֹּעֵב֖וֹת הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲל֤וֹא תֶֽאֱנַף־בָּ֙נוּ֙ עַד־כַּלֵּ֔ה לְאֵ֥ין שְׁאֵרִ֖ית וּפְלֵיטָֽה׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
should we again break Thy commandments, and make marriages with the peoples of these abominations? wouldst Thou not be angry with us till Thou wouldst consume us, so that there should be no remnant nor any to escape?

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
shall we revert to the violation of Your mitzvoth, to intermarry with the peoples of these abominations! Will You not rage at us until [(the point of)] destruction, until [there is left of us] no trace or remnant?

###### Ezra 9:15
[Ezra 9:15](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Ezra/r/9:15)

יְהֹוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ צַדִּ֣יק אַ֔תָּה כִּֽי־נִשְׁאַ֥רְנוּ פְלֵיטָ֖ה כְּהַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה הִנְנ֤וּ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ בְּאַשְׁמָתֵ֔ינוּ כִּ֣י אֵ֥ין לַעֲמ֛וֹד לְפָנֶ֖יךָ עַל־זֹֽאת׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
O Lord God of Yisra᾽el, Thou are righteous: for we are left, a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before Thee in our guiltiness: but we cannot stand before Thee because of this.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
O L-rd, G-d of Israel, You are righteous, for we have been left as a remnant as of this day. Behold, we are before You in our guilt, for we [have] no merits [with which] to stand before You against [i.e., to counter] this transgression.
