## Genesis Chapter 15

###### Genesis 15:1

אַחַ֣ר**׀** הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אַל־תִּירָ֣א אַבְרָ֗ם אָנֹכִי֙ מָגֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ שְׂכָרְךָ֖ הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

After these events, the word of Adonoy came to Avram in a vision, saying: Fear not Avram, I am your shield [*My Word is your strength*], your reward is very great.

After these things the word of the Lord came to Avram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Avram: I am thy shield; thy reward will be very great.

After these things, [the miracles wrought for him in vanquishing the kings, (Avram worrying that he might thereby have received his full reward)], the word of the L-rd came to Avram in a vision, saying: Do not fear, Avram; I am a shield [against punishment] for you [for the men that you have killed; and, as to your concern over having received your full reward], your reward is extremely great.

Avram said: My Master, God, what will You give me since I continue to be childless, and the manager of my household [*this supplier who is in my house*] is Eliezer of Damascus.

And Avram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is Eli῾ezer of Dammeseq?

And Avram said: L-rd G-d, what will You give me? I go wasted, [without children], and the purveyor of my household, [who would otherwise, be my son,] is Eliezer of Damascus.


###### Genesis 15:3

And Avram said: Behold, You have not given me children, and thus one of my household will be my heir.

Suddenly the word of Adonoy came to him, saying: That one will not be your heir; only he that will come from within your body [*a son that you will beget*] will be your heir.

And, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, This shall not be thy heir; but he that shall come forth out of thy own bowels shall be thy heir.

###### Genesis 15:5

וַיּוֹצֵ֨א אֹת֜וֹ הַח֗וּצָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַבֶּט־נָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָה וּסְפֹר֙ הַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔ים אִם־תּוּכַ֖ל לִסְפֹּ֣ר אֹתָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ כֹּ֥ה יִהְיֶ֖ה זַרְעֶֽךָ׃

He [then] took him outside and said: Look towards the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them. He then said to him: So [numerous] will your descendants be.

And He brought him outside, and said, Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to number them: and He said to him, So shall thy seed be.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הוֹצֵאתִ֙יךָ֙ מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים לָ֧תֶת לְךָ֛ אֶת־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃

He said to him: I am Adonoy who brought you out of Ur Kasdim, to give to you this land as an inheritance.

And He said to him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur-kasdim, to give thee this land to inherit it.

And he said: My Master, God, how will I know that I will inherit it?

###### Genesis 15:9

He said to him: Bring Me [*Sacrifice before Me*] three heifers, three goats and three rams, a dove, and a young pigeon.

And He said to him, Take Me a heifer three years old, and a goat three years old, and a ram three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

And He said to him: Take for Me three heifers, [intimating three bullocks: the bullock of Yom Kippur, the bullock of communal forgetfulness (Leviticus 4:13), and the bullock of the broken neck (Deuteronomy 21:4)], and three goats, [intimating the goat offered within (the holy of holies), the additional Festival goats, and the sin-offering goat of the individual (as opposed to that of the congregation)], and three rams, [intimating the confirmed guilt-offering, the suspended guilt-offering, and the sin-offering ewe of the individual], and a turtle-dove and a young pigeon.


###### Genesis 15:10

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֣וֹ אֶת־כׇּל־אֵ֗לֶּה וַיְבַתֵּ֤ר אֹתָם֙ בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אִישׁ־בִּתְר֖וֹ לִקְרַ֣את רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְאֶת־הַצִּפֹּ֖ר לֹ֥א בָתָֽר׃

He brought [*sacrificed*] all these to [*before*] Him; he split them in the middle [*into two equal parts*], and placed each piece opposite the other. The bird, however, he did not split.

And he took to Him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half against the other: but the birds he divided not.

And he took unto Him all these, [(the bullocks, rams, and goats, representing the nations; and the young doves, Israel)] and he split them [it being the custom of those entering into a covenant to split a beast and walk through the pieces, (G-d and Avram entering into a covenant here for Israel's inheritance of the land)], (… and he split them) in the middle, [(a sign that the nations would be destroyed)]. And he placed each piece opposite the other; but the birds he did not split [(a sign that Israel would remain "intact")].

וַיֵּ֥רֶד הָעַ֖יִט עַל־הַפְּגָרִ֑ים וַיַּשֵּׁ֥ב אֹתָ֖ם אַבְרָֽם׃

Birds of prey [vultures] descended upon the carcasses, but Avram drove them away.

And the eagle came down upon the carcasses, and Avram drove them away.

And (predatory) birds swooped down upon the [pieces of the] carcasses, and Avram swept them away [(a sign that David the son of Yishai will seek to destroy them (the nations), but will not be permitted to do so, until the advent of the Messiah.)]

וַיְהִ֤י הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ לָב֔וֹא וְתַרְדֵּמָ֖ה נָפְלָ֣ה עַל־אַבְרָ֑ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵימָ֛ה חֲשֵׁכָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה נֹפֶ֥לֶת עָלָֽיו׃

As the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and behold, a dread of deep darkness fell upon him.

And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and, lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאַבְרָ֗ם יָדֹ֨עַ תֵּדַ֜ע כִּי־גֵ֣ר**׀** יִהְיֶ֣ה זַרְעֲךָ֗ בְּאֶ֙רֶץ֙ לֹ֣א לָהֶ֔ם וַעֲבָד֖וּם וְעִנּ֣וּ אֹתָ֑ם אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָֽה׃

And He [Adonoy] said to Avram: Know for sure that your descendants will be foreigners in a land that is not theirs. They will enslave them and oppress them [for] four hundred years.

And He said to Avram, Know surely that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

But also that nation whom they will serve I will judge; afterwards they will leave with great wealth.

You will join your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age.

###### Genesis 15:16

וְד֥וֹר רְבִיעִ֖י יָשׁ֣וּבוּ הֵ֑נָּה כִּ֧י לֹא־שָׁלֵ֛ם עֲוֺ֥ן הָאֱמֹרִ֖י עַד־הֵֽנָּה׃

The fourth generation will return here, for the sin of the Emorites will not be complete until then [*now*].

But in the fourth generation they shall come back here, for the iniquity of the Emori is not yet full.

וַיְהִ֤י הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ בָּ֔אָה וַעֲלָטָ֖ה הָיָ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה תַנּ֤וּר עָשָׁן֙ וְלַפִּ֣יד אֵ֔שׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָבַ֔ר בֵּ֖ין הַגְּזָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

The sun set and it became very dark; and behold, a smoking furnace and a flaming torch had passed between these pieces.
