## Genesis Chapter 30

###### Genesis 30:1

וַתֵּ֣רֶא רָחֵ֗ל כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָֽלְדָה֙ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב וַתְּקַנֵּ֥א רָחֵ֖ל בַּאֲחֹתָ֑הּ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹב֙ הָֽבָה־לִּ֣י בָנִ֔ים וְאִם־אַ֖יִן מֵתָ֥ה אָנֹֽכִי׃

Rochel saw that she was not bearing children to Yaakov. Rochel became jealous of her sister, and she said to Yaakov, Give me children; if not I am [considered] dead.

And when Raĥel saw that she bore Ya῾aqov no children, Raĥel envied her sister; and said, Give me children, or else I die.

And Rachel saw that she had not borne (a child) to Jacob, and Rachel envied her sister, [thinking that if Leah were not more righteous than she, she, too, would not have borne], and she said to Jacob: "Give me children" [i.e., pray for me to bear children, as your father did for your mother], "and if not, I am dead."

Yaakov became very angry with Rochel, and he said, Am I in God’s place? [It is He] who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb.

And Ya῾aqov’s anger burned against Raĥel: and he said, Am I in the place of God, Who has withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה אֲמָתִ֥י בִלְהָ֖ה בֹּ֣א אֵלֶ֑יהָ וְתֵלֵד֙ עַל־בִּרְכַּ֔י וְאִבָּנֶ֥ה גַם־אָנֹכִ֖י מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

She said, Here is my handmaid, Bilhah, consummate a marriage with her. Let her give birth upon my knees, and I too will have a son through her.

And she said, Behold my maid Bilha, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

And she said: Here is my handmaid Bilhah. Come to her and let her bear upon my knees, [i.e., I shall raise her child], and I, too, shall build up [i.e., bear a child] by cause of her, [(as Sarah did after she had given her handmaid Hagar to Abraham)].

Rochel said, With Elohim’s bonds, I have been joined to my sister, and I have also prevailed. She [therefore] called him Naftali.

Leah realized that she was no longer bearing children. She [therefore] took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Yaakov as a wife.

When Le᾽a saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpa her maid, and gave her to Ya῾aqov to wife.

Reuvein went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found jasmine flowers in the field. He brought them to Leah, his mother. Rochel said to Leah, Please give me some of your son’s jasmine flowers.

And Re᾽uven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Le᾽a. Then Raĥel said to Le᾽a, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.

And Reuven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and he found violets in the field [(He took what was ownerless and not what had been harvested)], and he brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah: Give me of the violets of your son.

She [Leah] said to her, Isn’t it enough that you took my husband? Would you also take my son’s jasmine flowers? Rochel said, Therefore, he shall be with you tonight in exchange for your son’s jasmine flowers.

And she said to her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldst thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Raĥel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee tonight for thy son’s mandrakes.

And she said to her: Is your taking my husband too little that you would also take the violets of my son? And Rachel said: Therefore, he will lie with you this night [(which was "Rachel's night")] in exchange for the violets of your son.

Leah said, Elohim has given a goodly portion. Now my husband will make his [main] home with me, for I have borne him six sons. She named him Zevulun.

Elohim remembered Rochel and opened her womb.

She named him Yoseif, saying, May Adonoy add to me another son.

When Rochel had given birth to Yoseif, Yaakov said to Lavan, Send me on my way, and I will go to my own place and to my homeland.

תְּנָ֞ה אֶת־נָשַׁ֣י וְאֶת־יְלָדַ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֧דְתִּי אֹֽתְךָ֛ בָּהֵ֖ן וְאֵלֵ֑כָה כִּ֚י אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֶת־עֲבֹדָתִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲבַדְתִּֽיךָ׃

Give me [permission to take] my wives and my children, for whom I worked for you, and I will go; for you know my work that I did for you.
