## Genesis Chapter 4

###### Genesis 4:1

וְהָ֣אָדָ֔ם יָדַ֖ע אֶת־חַוָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ וַתַּ֙הַר֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד אֶת־קַ֔יִן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר קָנִ֥יתִי אִ֖ישׁ אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃

The man knew his wife, Chavah. She conceived and she gave birth to Kayin, and she said, I have obtained a man with Adonoy.

And the man knew Ḥavva his wife; and she conceived, and bore Qayin saying, I have acquired a manchild from the Lord.

And the man had known Chavah his wife and she had conceived and had borne [(even before the episode of the tree of knowledge)], [a twin girl] with Cain. And she said: "I have acquired [(kanithi, like "Cain")] a man with the L-rd" [(my husband and I being "partners" with Him in the creation of Cain)].

וַתֹּ֣סֶף לָלֶ֔דֶת אֶת־אָחִ֖יו אֶת־הָ֑בֶל וַֽיְהִי־הֶ֙בֶל֙ רֹ֣עֵה צֹ֔אן וְקַ֕יִן הָיָ֖ה עֹבֵ֥ד אֲדָמָֽה׃

She gave birth again, to his brother Hevel. Hevel became a shepherd, but Kayin was a worker of the soil.

And she again bore, his brother Hevel. And Hevel was a keeper of sheep, but Qayin was a tiller of the ground.

In the course of time, Kayin brought some fruit of the soil as an offering to Adonoy.

Hevel also brought from the firstborn of his flock, from the best thereof. Adonoy paid regard to Hevel and to his offering.

But to Kayin and his offering He paid no regard. Kayin became very angry and depressed.

הֲל֤וֹא אִם־תֵּיטִיב֙ שְׂאֵ֔ת וְאִם֙ לֹ֣א תֵיטִ֔יב לַפֶּ֖תַח חַטָּ֣את רֹבֵ֑ץ וְאֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ תְּשׁ֣וּקָת֔וֹ וְאַתָּ֖ה תִּמְשׇׁל־בּֽוֹ׃

Is this not so—if you improve, there is forgiveness, but if you do not improve, sin rests at the opening. Its desire is unto you, but you can dominate it.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin crouches at the door, and to thee shall be his desire. Yet thou mayst rule over him.

If you make amends, will you not be forgiven? And if you do not make amends, at the opening [of your grave] your sin lies [i.e., is preserved], and to you is its [the evil inclination's] desire [to lead you astray]; but you can rule over it.

Kayin said [something] to his brother Hevel, and it happened when they were in the field, that Kayin rose up against his brother, Hevel, and killed him.

And Qayin talked with Hevel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Qayin rose up against Hevel his brother, and slew him.

Adonoy then said to Kayin, Where is your brother, Hevel? [Kayin] said, I know not, am I my brother’s keeper?

He said [to Kayin], What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

וְעַתָּ֖ה אָר֣וּר אָ֑תָּה מִן־הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּצְתָ֣ה אֶת־פִּ֔יהָ לָקַ֛חַת אֶת־דְּמֵ֥י אָחִ֖יךָ מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃

Now you are cursed from the ground that had to open its mouth to accept your brother’s blood from your hand.

And now cursed art thou from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

כִּ֤י תַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה לֹֽא־תֹסֵ֥ף תֵּת־כֹּחָ֖הּ לָ֑ךְ נָ֥ע וָנָ֖ד תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה בָאָֽרֶץ׃

When you work the ground, it will no longer give you of its strength. You will be unsettled, and a wanderer on the earth.

when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield to thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be on the earth.

Behold, today You have banished me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I am to be hidden. I am to be unsettled and a wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me, will kill me.

Adonoy said to him, Therefore, whoever kills Kayin, revenge will be taken on him [Kayin] sevenfold. Adonoy placed a mark on Kayin, so that whoever would find him would not kill him.

And the Lord said to him, Therefore whoever slays Qayin, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Qayin, lest any finding him should smite him.

Kayin exited from the Presence of Adonoy and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

To Chanoch was born Irad. Irad had a son Mechuyael, Mechuyael had a son Mesushael, and Mesushael, had a son Lemech.

Lemech married two women, the first was named Adah, and the name of the second was Tzillah.

Adah gave birth to Yaval. He was the father of those who live in tents, and breed cattle.

###### Genesis 4:22

וְצִלָּ֣ה גַם־הִ֗וא יָֽלְדָה֙ אֶת־תּ֣וּבַל קַ֔יִן לֹטֵ֕שׁ כׇּל־חֹרֵ֥שׁ נְחֹ֖שֶׁת וּבַרְזֶ֑ל וַֽאֲח֥וֹת תּֽוּבַל־קַ֖יִן נַֽעֲמָֽה׃

Tzillah also gave birth to Tuval Kayin, who sharpened everything which cuts copper and iron. The sister of Tuval Kayin was Naamah.

And Żilla, she also bore Tuval-qayin, forger of every sharp instrument in brass and iron: and the sister of Tuval-qayin was Na῾ama.

And Tzilah — she, too, bore Tuval-Cain [lit., "refiner of Cain" (i.e., of his trade — murder)], forging all tools of copper and iron. And the sister of Tuval-Cain was Na'amah.

Lemech said to his wives, Adah and Tzillah, hear my voice, wives of Lemech listen to my speech; have I have killed a man by my own wounding and a child by my own hurting?.

And Lemekh said to his wives, ῾Ada and Żilla, Hear my voice; wives of Lemekh, hearken to my speech: for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for my hurt.

If Kayin shall be avenged sevenfold, then for Lemech it shall be seventy-seven fold.

If Qayin shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lemekh seventy and sevenfold.

If Cain, [who killed wilfully,] were avenged [only after] seven generations, should Lemech, [who killed unwittingly, not be granted] seventy and seven!

Adam knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and named him Sheis, Because Elohim has granted me another offspring in place of Hevel, for Kayin had killed him.
