## Genesis Chapter 48

###### Genesis 48:1

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְיוֹסֵ֔ף הִנֵּ֥ה אָבִ֖יךָ חֹלֶ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־שְׁנֵ֤י בָנָיו֙ עִמּ֔וֹ אֶת־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה וְאֶת־אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

After these events, someone said to Yoseif, Behold your father is ill. He took his two sons with him, Menasheh and Ephraim.

And it came to pass after these things, that one told Yosef, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Menashshe and Efrayim.

וַיַּגֵּ֣ד לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה בִּנְךָ֥ יוֹסֵ֖ף בָּ֣א אֵלֶ֑יךָ וַיִּתְחַזֵּק֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב עַל־הַמִּטָּֽה׃

It was told to Yaakov, saying, Behold, your son, Yoseif, has come to you. Yisrael gathered his strength and sat up in bed.

And one told Ya῾aqov, and said, Behold, thy son Yosef comes to thee: and Yisra᾽el strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

Yaakov said to Yoseif, Almighty Shaddai appeared to me in Luz, in the land of Canaan, and He blessed me.

###### Genesis 48:4

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י הִנְנִ֤י מַפְרְךָ֙ וְהִרְבִּיתִ֔ךָ וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ לִקְהַ֣ל עַמִּ֑ים וְנָ֨תַתִּ֜י אֶת־הָאָ֧רֶץ הַזֹּ֛את לְזַרְעֲךָ֥ אַחֲרֶ֖יךָ אֲחֻזַּ֥ת עוֹלָֽם׃

He said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you into an assembly of nations. I will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.

and said to me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

And He said to me: Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a congregation of peoples, [two additional tribes issuing from him, Ephraim and Menasheh (see 35:11)], and I will give this land to your seed after you for an eternal blessing.

וְעַתָּ֡ה שְׁנֵֽי־בָנֶ֩יךָ֩ הַנּוֹלָדִ֨ים לְךָ֜ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם עַד־בֹּאִ֥י אֵלֶ֛יךָ מִצְרַ֖יְמָה לִי־הֵ֑ם אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה כִּרְאוּבֵ֥ן וְשִׁמְע֖וֹן יִֽהְיוּ־לִֽי׃

And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you to Egypt, are mine. Ephraim and Menasheh, like Reuvein and Shimon, shall be mine.

And now thy two sons, Efrayim and Menashshe, who were born to thee in the land of Miżrayim before I came to thee into Miżrayim, are mine; as Re᾽uven and Shim῾on they shall be mine.

###### Genesis 48:6

וּמוֹלַדְתְּךָ֛ אֲשֶׁר־הוֹלַ֥דְתָּ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם לְךָ֣ יִהְי֑וּ עַ֣ל שֵׁ֧ם אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם יִקָּרְא֖וּ בְּנַחֲלָתָֽם׃

But your progeny that will be born after them shall be yours. They shall be called by their brother’s name with regard to their inheritance.

And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance.

וַאֲנִ֣י**׀** בְּבֹאִ֣י מִפַּדָּ֗ן מֵ֩תָה֩ עָלַ֨י רָחֵ֜ל בְּאֶ֤רֶץ כְּנַ֙עַן֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ בְּע֥וֹד כִּבְרַת־אֶ֖רֶץ לָבֹ֣א אֶפְרָ֑תָה וָאֶקְבְּרֶ֤הָ שָּׁם֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֶפְרָ֔ת הִ֖וא בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

And I, when I came from Padan, Rochel died unto me in the land of Canaan, on the road, when there was yet a stretch of land, before coming to Ephros. I buried her there on the road to Ephros, which is Beis Lechem.

And as for me, when I came from Paddan, Raĥel died by me in the land of Kena῾an on the way, when yet there was but a little way to come to Efrat: and I buried her there in the way of Efrat; that is Bet-leĥem.

[And though I tax you to carry me for burial to the land of Canaan though I did not exert myself similarly for your mother], for when I came from Padan, Rachel died upon me in the land of Canaan on the road, just a kivrah [a short distance] before Efrath, and I buried her there on the road to Efrath, which is Bethlehem, [without even taking her into Bethlehem — bear no rancor against me for this, for I did so by Divine command, that Rachel might implore mercy for her children when they passed that way in the exile of Nevuzaradan (see Jeremiah 31)].

Yisrael saw Yoseif’s sons, and he said, Who are these?

And Yisra᾽el beheld Yosef’s sons, and said, Who are these?

And Israel saw the sons of Joseph [and wished to bless them — when the Shechinah departed from him, (for Yeravam and Achav were destined to descend from Ephraim, and Yehu and his sons from Menasheh)], and he said: "Who are these!" [i.e., Whence did they issue that they are not fit to be blessed?]

Yoseif said to his father, These are my sons, whom Elohim has given me in this [place]. He [Yaakov] said, Please Take them to me, and I will bless them.

וְעֵינֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כָּבְד֣וּ מִזֹּ֔קֶן לֹ֥א יוּכַ֖ל לִרְא֑וֹת וַיַּגֵּ֤שׁ אֹתָם֙ אֵלָ֔יו וַיִּשַּׁ֥ק לָהֶ֖ם וַיְחַבֵּ֥ק לָהֶֽם׃

Yisrael’s eyes were heavy with age, and he could not see. He [Yoseif] brought them near to him, and he kissed them and hugged them.

###### Genesis 48:12

וַיּוֹצֵ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֹתָ֖ם מֵעִ֣ם בִּרְכָּ֑יו וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לְאַפָּ֖יו אָֽרְצָה׃

Yoseif brought them out from between his knees, and he prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

And Yosef brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

And Joseph took them out from between his knees [in order to place them in the right position for blessing; one to the right, the other to the left.] And he prostrated himself to the ground [after he had walked backwards in deference to his father].

Yoseif took the two [of them]—Ephraim in his right [hand], toward Yisrael’s left, and Menasheh in his left, toward Yisrael’s right—and he brought them near to him.

וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל אֶת־יְמִינ֜וֹ וַיָּ֨שֶׁת עַל־רֹ֤אשׁ אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ וְה֣וּא הַצָּעִ֔יר וְאֶת־שְׂמֹאל֖וֹ עַל־רֹ֣אשׁ מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה שִׂכֵּל֙ אֶת־יָדָ֔יו כִּ֥י מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה הַבְּכֽוֹר׃

Yisrael stretched out his right [hand] and placed it on the head of Ephraim, [although] he was the younger, and his left [hand] on the head of Menasheh. He deliberately placed his hands so, even though Menasheh was the firstborn.

And Yisra᾽el stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Efrayim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Menashshe’s head, changing his hands; for Menashshe was the first-born.

וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הָֽאֱלֹהִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ הִתְהַלְּכ֨וּ אֲבֹתַ֤י לְפָנָיו֙ אַבְרָהָ֣ם וְיִצְחָ֔ק הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ הָרֹעֶ֣ה אֹתִ֔י מֵעוֹדִ֖י עַד־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

He blessed Yoseif and said, Elohim before whom my fathers walked, Avraham, and Yitzchok, Elohim who was my shepherd from my inception until this day—

###### Genesis 48:16

הַמַּלְאָךְ֩ הַגֹּאֵ֨ל אֹתִ֜י מִכׇּל־רָ֗ע יְבָרֵךְ֮ אֶת־הַנְּעָרִים֒ וְיִקָּרֵ֤א בָהֶם֙ שְׁמִ֔י וְשֵׁ֥ם אֲבֹתַ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם וְיִצְחָ֑ק וְיִדְגּ֥וּ לָרֹ֖ב בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

The Angel who redeemed me from all evil, should bless the lads, and let my name be called on them, together with the name of my fathers, Avraham and Yitzchok. May they be like fish, multiplying within the land.

the angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Avraham and Yiżĥaq; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

The angel who is wont to redeem me from all evil [e.g., 31:11], let him bless the youths [Menasheh and Ephraim], and let my name be called in them, and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, and may they proliferate [veyidgu, like fish (dagim)] abundantly, [(like fish, not prey to the evil eye)] in the midst of the earth.

וַיַּ֣רְא יוֹסֵ֗ף כִּי־יָשִׁ֨ית אָבִ֧יו יַד־יְמִינ֛וֹ עַל־רֹ֥אשׁ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וַיֵּ֣רַע בְּעֵינָ֑יו וַיִּתְמֹ֣ךְ יַד־אָבִ֗יו לְהָסִ֥יר אֹתָ֛הּ מֵעַ֥ל רֹאשׁ־אֶפְרַ֖יִם עַל־רֹ֥אשׁ מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃

Yoseif saw that his father placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head, and it was bad in his eyes. He held up his fathers hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head [and to place it] on Menasheh’s head.

And when Yosef saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Efrayim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Efrayim’s head to Menashshe’s head.

And Joseph saw that his father had placed his right hand on the head of Ephraim, and it was bad in his eyes; and he took his father's hand to remove it from the head of Ephraim to the head of Menasheh.

Yoseif said to his father, Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn, place your right hand on his head.

וַיְמָאֵ֣ן אָבִ֗יו וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יָדַ֤עְתִּֽי בְנִי֙ יָדַ֔עְתִּי גַּם־ה֥וּא יִֽהְיֶה־לְּעָ֖ם וְגַם־ה֣וּא יִגְדָּ֑ל וְאוּלָ֗ם אָחִ֤יו הַקָּטֹן֙ יִגְדַּ֣ל מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְזַרְע֖וֹ יִהְיֶ֥ה מְלֹֽא־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃

His father refused, and he said, I know my son, I know. He too will become a people, he too will become great; however his younger brother will be greater than he, and [the fame] of his descendants will fill the nations.

And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

And his father demurred and he said: I know, my son, I know [that he is the first-born]. He, too, will be a people, and he, too, will be great, [Gideon being destined to descend from him, for whom the L rd will perform a miracle], but his younger brother will be greater than he, [Joshua being destined to descend from him, who will inherit the land and teach Torah to Israel], and the nations will be full of [the praises of him and] his seed [when he makes the sun stand still in Giveon, and the moon in the valley of Ayalon].

וַיְבָ֨רְכֵ֜ם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַהוּא֮ לֵאמוֹר֒ בְּךָ֗ יְבָרֵ֤ךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְשִֽׂמְךָ֣ אֱלֹהִ֔ים כְּאֶפְרַ֖יִם וְכִמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־אֶפְרַ֖יִם לִפְנֵ֥י מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃

He blessed them on that day saying: Through you shall [the People of] Israel bless saying; May Elohim make you as Ephraim and Menasheh. He placed Ephraim ahead of Menasheh.

And he blessed them that day, saying, By thee shall Yisra᾽el bless, saying, God make thee as Efrayim and as Menashshe: and he set Efrayim before Menashshe.

And he blessed them on that day, saying: In you [i.e., in your blessings] will Israel bless [their sons in future generations], saying: "May G d make you as Ephraim and Menasheh." And he placed Ephraim [in his blessing] before Menasheh [for precedence in the banners (see Numbers 2:18 and 10:22) and for the altar consecration by the princes of the tribes (Ibid. 7)].

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף הִנֵּ֥ה אָנֹכִ֖י מֵ֑ת וְהָיָ֤ה אֱלֹהִים֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם וְהֵשִׁ֣יב אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ אֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃
