## I Kings Chapter 13

###### I Kings 13:1

וְהִנֵּ֣ה**׀** אִ֣ישׁ אֱלֹהִ֗ים בָּ֧א מִיהוּדָ֛ה בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וְיָרׇבְעָ֛ם עֹמֵ֥ד עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ לְהַקְטִֽיר׃

Then behold, a man of God came from Yehudah, with the word of Adonoy, to Beis Eil; and Yerovom was standing at the Altar to burn an incense offering.


###### I Kings 13:2

וַיִּקְרָ֤א עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מִזְבֵּ֣חַ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה הִנֵּה־בֵ֞ן נוֹלָ֤ד לְבֵית־דָּוִד֙ יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הֽוּ שְׁמ֔וֹ וְזָבַ֣ח עָלֶ֗יךָ אֶת־כֹּהֲנֵ֤י הַבָּמוֹת֙ הַמַּקְטִרִ֣ים עָלֶ֔יךָ וְעַצְמ֥וֹת אָדָ֖ם יִשְׂרְפ֥וּ עָלֶֽיךָ׃

And [the man] called to the altar with the word of God [prophecy] and said, “Altar, altar, so has Adonoy spoken, ‘Behold, a son is born to the House of Dovid, and Yoshiyohu is his name, and he will slaughter upon you the priests of the altars who burn incense upon you, and the bones of human beings he will burn upon you.’”


###### I Kings 13:3

וְנָתַן֩ בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֤וּא מוֹפֵת֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר זֶ֣ה הַמּוֹפֵ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֤ה הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ נִקְרָ֔ע וְנִשְׁפַּ֖ךְ הַדֶּ֥שֶׁן אֲשֶׁר־עָלָֽיו׃

And he gave a sign [proof] on that day saying, “This is the sign that Adonoy has spoken; Behold the Altar will split, and the ashes that are upon it will be spilled.”


###### I Kings 13:4

וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר קָרָ֤א עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֔ל וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יָרׇבְעָ֧ם אֶת־יָד֛וֹ מֵעַ֥ל הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ לֵאמֹ֣ר׀תִּפְשֻׂ֑הוּ וַתִּיבַ֤שׁ יָדוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁלַ֣ח עָלָ֔יו וְלֹ֥א יָכֹ֖ל לַהֲשִׁיבָ֥הּ אֵלָֽיו׃

And when the king heard the word [message] of the man of God, that he proclaimed about the altar in Beis Eil, Yerovom reached out his hand from above the altar, saying, “Seize him;” but his hand dried up [stiffened] with which he reached out toward him, and he was unable to draw it back to himself.

וְהַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ נִקְרָ֔ע וַיִּשָּׁפֵ֥ךְ הַדֶּ֖שֶׁן מִן־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כַּמּוֹפֵ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֛ן אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה׃

And the altar split and the ashes spilled from the altar, just as the sign that the man of God gave, by the word of God.


###### I Kings 13:6

וַיַּ֨עַן הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר**׀** אֶל־אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים חַל־נָ֞א אֶת־פְּנֵ֨י יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ וְהִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל בַּעֲדִ֔י וְתָשֹׁ֥ב יָדִ֖י אֵלָ֑י וַיְחַ֤ל אִישׁ־הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה וַתָּ֤שׇׁב יַד־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֵלָ֔יו וַתְּהִ֖י כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

The king cried out and said to the man of God, “Please beseech Adonoy, your God, and pray for me, that my hand return to me.” The man of God beseeched Adonoy and king’s hand was returned to him, as it was originally.


###### I Kings 13:7

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֶל־אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בֹּֽאָה־אִתִּ֥י הַבַּ֖יְתָה וּֽסְעָ֑דָה וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה לְךָ֖ מַתָּֽת׃

And the king spoke to the man of God; “Come home with me and have a meal, and I will give you a gift.”


###### I Kings 13:8

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אִישׁ־הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אִם־תִּתֶּן־לִי֙ אֶת־חֲצִ֣י בֵיתֶ֔ךָ לֹ֥א אָבֹ֖א עִמָּ֑ךְ וְלֹא־אֹ֤כַל לֶ֙חֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶשְׁתֶּה־מַּ֔יִם בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

And the man of God said to the king, “[Even] if you give me half of your house, I will not come with you; and I will not eat bread, nor will I drink water in this place.


###### I Kings 13:9

כִּי־כֵ֣ן**׀** צִוָּ֣ה אֹתִ֗י בִּדְבַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹא־תֹ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְלֹ֣א תִשְׁתֶּה־מָּ֑יִם וְלֹ֣א תָשׁ֔וּב בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽכְתָּ׃

For so has He commanded me by the word of God, saying, “You must not eat bread, nor drink water, and do not return by the road on which you came.”


###### I Kings 13:10

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אַחֵ֑ר וְלֹא־שָׁ֣ב בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֛ר בָּ֥א בָ֖הּ אֶל־בֵּֽית־אֵֽל׃{פ}

And so he went on a different way, and he did not return by the road on which he had come to Beis Eil.

וְנָבִ֤יא אֶחָד֙ זָקֵ֔ן יֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֑ל וַיָּב֣וֹא בְנ֡וֹ וַיְסַפֶּר־ל֣וֹ אֶת־כׇּל־הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה֩ אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֨ים׀הַיּ֜וֹם בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֗ל אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַֽיְסַפְּר֖וּם לַאֲבִיהֶֽם׃

There was an old prophet who lived in Beis Eil; and his son came and told him about everything that the man of God performed that day in Beis Eil, [and] the words that he had spoken to the king, they related to their father.


###### I Kings 13:12

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֵי־זֶ֥ה הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ הָלָ֑ךְ וַיִּרְא֣וּ בָנָ֗יו אֶת־הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָלַךְ֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֖א מִיהוּדָֽה׃

And their father said to them, “By which road did he travel?” His son showed him the road by which the man of God traveled, who had come from Yehudah.


###### I Kings 13:13

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־בָּנָ֔יו חִבְשׁוּ־לִ֖י הַחֲמ֑וֹר וַיַּחְבְּשׁוּ־ל֣וֹ הַחֲמ֔וֹר וַיִּרְכַּ֖ב עָלָֽיו׃

And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” They saddled the donkey for him and he rode on it.


###### I Kings 13:14

וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּ֨מְצָאֵ֔הוּ יֹשֵׁ֖ב תַּ֣חַת הָאֵלָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו הַאַתָּ֧ה אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אתָ מִיהוּדָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אָֽנִי׃

And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under the *Ailoh* tree; and he said to him, “Are you the man of God, who came from Yehudah?” And he replied, “I am.”


###### I Kings 13:15

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו לֵ֥ךְ אִתִּ֖י הַבָּ֑יְתָה וֶאֱכֹ֖ל לָֽחֶם׃

And he said to him, “Come to my house with me and eat bread.”


###### I Kings 13:16

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֥א אוּכַ֛ל לָשׁ֥וּב אִתָּ֖ךְ וְלָב֣וֹא אִתָּ֑ךְ וְלֹא־אֹ֣כַל לֶ֗חֶם וְלֹֽא־אֶשְׁתֶּ֤ה אִתְּךָ֙ מַ֔יִם בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

And he said, “I cannot return with you, or to come with you. I will not eat bread, nor will I drink water with you in this place.


###### I Kings 13:17

כִּֽי־דָבָ֤ר אֵלַי֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹא־תֹאכַ֣ל לֶ֔חֶם וְלֹא־תִשְׁתֶּ֥ה שָׁ֖ם מָ֑יִם לֹא־תָשׁ֣וּב לָלֶ֔כֶת בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־הָלַ֥כְתָּ בָּֽהּ׃

For word came to me by word of Adonoy, ‘Do not eat bread, and do not drink water there. Do not return to travel by the road on which you traveled [to come here].’”


###### I Kings 13:18

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ גַּם־אֲנִ֣י נָבִיא֮ כָּמ֒וֹךָ֒ וּמַלְאָ֡ךְ דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלַי֩ בִּדְבַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֜ה לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲשִׁבֵ֤הוּ אִתְּךָ֙ אֶל־בֵּיתֶ֔ךָ וְיֹ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְיֵ֣שְׁתְּ מָ֑יִם כִּחֵ֖שׁ לֽוֹ׃

And he said to him, “I too am a prophet like yourself, and an angel spoke to me, with the word of Adonoy, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, and he will eat bread and drink water’” He deceived him.

וַיָּ֣שׇׁב אִתּ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֛חֶם בְּבֵית֖וֹ וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מָֽיִם׃

And he returned with him and he ate bread in his house and drank water.


###### I Kings 13:20

וַיְהִ֕י הֵ֥ם יֹשְׁבִ֖ים אֶל־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֑ן{פ}
וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־הַנָּבִ֖יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֱשִׁיבֽוֹ׃

As they were sitting at the table the word of Adonoy came to the prophet that caused him to return.


###### I Kings 13:21

וַיִּקְרָ֞א אֶל־אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֤א מִֽיהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה יַ֗עַן כִּ֤י מָרִ֙יתָ֙ פִּ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה וְלֹ֤א שָׁמַ֙רְתָּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

And He called to the man of God, who had come from Yehudah saying, “Thus said Adonoy, ‘Since you rebelled against the word of Adonoy, and you did not preserve the *mitzvah* that Adonoy, your God, commanded you;


###### I Kings 13:22

וַתָּ֗שׇׁב וַתֹּ֤אכַל לֶ֙חֶם֙ וַתֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מַ֔יִם בַּמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־תֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְאַל־תֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מָ֑יִם לֹא־תָב֥וֹא נִבְלָתְךָ֖ אֶל־קֶ֥בֶר אֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃

and you returned, and ate bread, and drank water in the place about which He told you, “Do not eat bread, and do not drink water,” your corpse will not enter the grave of your fathers.’”


###### I Kings 13:23

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵ֛י אׇכְל֥וֹ לֶ֖חֶם וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שְׁתוֹת֑וֹ וַיַּחֲבׇשׁ־ל֣וֹ הַחֲמ֔וֹר לַנָּבִ֖יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֱשִׁיבֽוֹ׃

And after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet that he brought back.


###### I Kings 13:24

וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ וַיִּמְצָאֵ֧הוּ אַרְיֵ֛ה בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ וַתְּהִ֤י נִבְלָתוֹ֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְהַֽחֲמוֹר֙ עֹמֵ֣ד אֶצְלָ֔הּ וְהָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמֵ֖ד אֵ֥צֶל הַנְּבֵלָֽה׃

And he [the prophet] went [on his way] and a lion found him on the road and killed him; and his corpse was thrown on the road. The donkey remained standing next to it and the lion stood next to the corpse.


###### I Kings 13:25

וְהִנֵּ֧ה אֲנָשִׁ֣ים עֹבְרִ֗ים וַיִּרְא֤וּ אֶת־הַנְּבֵלָה֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְאֶת־הָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמֵ֖ד אֵ֣צֶל הַנְּבֵלָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ בָעִ֔יר אֲשֶׁ֛ר הַנָּבִ֥יא הַזָּקֵ֖ן יֹשֵׁ֥ב בָּֽהּ׃

And behold, people were passing by and they saw the corpse flung on the road, and the lion standing next to the corpse; and they came and spoke about it in the city in which the old prophet lived.


###### I Kings 13:26

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע הַנָּבִיא֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֱשִׁיב֣וֹ מִן־הַדֶּ֒רֶךְ֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֣ים ה֔וּא אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָרָ֖ה אֶת־פִּ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֨הוּ יְהֹוָ֜ה לָאַרְיֵ֗ה וַֽיִּשְׁבְּרֵ֙הוּ֙ וַיְמִתֵ֔הוּ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּר־לֽוֹ׃

And the prophet heard [about it] he who had brought him back from the road, and he said, “It is the man of God who rebelled against the word of Adonoy; and Adonoy delivered him to the lion, and the lion crushed him and killed him just like the word of God that He had spoken to him.”


###### I Kings 13:27

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־בָּנָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר חִבְשׁוּ־לִ֖י אֶֽת־הַחֲמ֑וֹר וַֽיַּחֲבֹֽשׁוּ׃

And he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they saddled it.


###### I Kings 13:28

וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיִּמְצָ֤א אֶת־נִבְלָתוֹ֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וַֽחֲמוֹר֙ וְהָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמְדִ֖ים אֵ֣צֶל הַנְּבֵלָ֑ה לֹֽא־אָכַ֤ל הָֽאַרְיֵה֙ אֶת־הַנְּבֵלָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁבַ֖ר אֶֽת־הַחֲמֽוֹר׃

And he went and found the corpse flung on the road and the donkey and the lion standing next to the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse and had not crushed the donkey


###### I Kings 13:29

וַיִּשָּׂ֨א הַנָּבִ֜יא אֶת־נִבְלַ֧ת אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים וַיַּנִּחֵ֥הוּ אֶֽל־הַחֲמ֖וֹר וַיְשִׁיבֵ֑הוּ וַיָּבֹ֗א אֶל־עִיר֙ הַנָּבִ֣יא הַזָּקֵ֔ן לִסְפֹּ֖ד וּלְקׇבְרֽוֹ׃

The prophet carried the corpse of the man of God and placed it on the donkey and brought it back. He came to the city of the old prophet to eulogize him and to bury him.


###### I Kings 13:30

וַיַּנַּ֥ח אֶת־נִבְלָת֖וֹ בְּקִבְר֑וֹ וַיִּסְפְּד֥וּ עָלָ֖יו ה֥וֹי אָחִֽי׃

He placed the corpse in his own grave, and they eulogized him [saying], “Alas my brother.”
