## I Kings Chapter 9

###### I Kings 9:1

וַֽיְהִי֙ כְּכַלּ֣וֹת שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה לִבְנ֥וֹת אֶת־בֵּית־יְהֹוָ֖ה וְאֶת־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־חֵ֣שֶׁק שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפֵ֖ץ לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃{פ}

And it was when Shlomo completed building the Beis Hamikdosh of Adonoy and the house of the king, and all the desires of Shlomo that he wished to do.

וַיֵּרָ֧א יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה שֵׁנִ֑ית כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נִרְאָ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו בְּגִבְעֽוֹן׃

Adonoy appeared to Shlomo a second time, as He had appeared to him in Givon.


###### I Kings 9:3

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֵלָ֗יו שָׁ֠מַ֠עְתִּי אֶת־תְּפִלָּתְךָ֣ וְאֶת־תְּחִנָּתְךָ֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִתְחַנַּ֣נְתָּה לְפָנַי֒ הִקְדַּ֗שְׁתִּי אֶת־הַבַּ֤יִת הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּנִ֔תָה לָשׂוּם־שְׁמִ֥י שָׁ֖ם עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם וְהָי֨וּ עֵינַ֧י וְלִבִּ֛י שָׁ֖ם כׇּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

And Adonoy said to him, “I have listened to your prayer and your plea that you have pleaded before Me. I have sanctified this House that you built to put My Name there for eternity, and My eyes and My heart will be there all the days.


###### I Kings 9:4

וְאַתָּ֞ה אִם־תֵּלֵ֣ךְ לְפָנַ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הָלַ֜ךְ דָּוִ֤ד אָבִ֙יךָ֙ בְּתׇם־לֵבָ֣ב וּבְיֹ֔שֶׁר לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת כְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֑יךָ חֻקַּ֥י וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃

As for you, if you walk before Me as Dovid, your father walked, with a pure heart and with uprightness, to do all that I have commanded you, to preserve My statutes and My judgements.


###### I Kings 9:5

וַהֲקִ֨מֹתִ֜י אֶת־כִּסֵּ֧א מַֽמְלַכְתְּךָ֛ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעֹלָ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּ֗רְתִּי עַל־דָּוִ֤ד אָבִ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֥א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Yisroel forever, as I spoke to Dovid, your father, saying, ‘No man [descendant] of yours will be cut off from the throne of Yisroel.


###### I Kings 9:6

אִם־שׁ֨וֹב תְּשֻׁב֜וּן אַתֶּ֤ם וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ מֵֽאַחֲרַ֔י וְלֹ֤א תִשְׁמְרוּ֙ מִצְוֺתַ֣י חֻקֹּתַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֗ם וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּם֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם לָהֶֽם׃

But if you and your sons turn away from following Me, and do not preserve My *mitzvos* and My statutues that I have presented to you; and go and worship other gods and bow down to them.


###### I Kings 9:7

וְהִכְרַתִּ֣י אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מֵעַ֨ל פְּנֵ֤י הָאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣תִּי לָהֶ֔ם וְאֶת־הַבַּ֙יִת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִקְדַּ֣שְׁתִּי לִשְׁמִ֔י אֲשַׁלַּ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑י וְהָיָ֧ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל לְמָשָׁ֥ל וְלִשְׁנִינָ֖ה בְּכׇל־הָעַמִּֽים׃

I will cut off Yisroel from the face of the land that I gave to them, and the House that I have sanctified for My Name, I will cast off from My presence; and Yisroel will become an example and a mockery among all the peoples.


###### I Kings 9:8

וְהַבַּ֤יִת הַזֶּה֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה עֶלְי֔וֹן כׇּל־עֹבֵ֥ר עָלָ֖יו יִשֹּׁ֣ם וְשָׁרָ֑ק וְאָמְר֗וּ עַל־מֶ֨ה עָשָׂ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ כָּ֔כָה לָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את וְלַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּֽה׃

And this Beis Hamikdosh will be most high, [and] all who pass by it will be astounded and whistle; and they will say, ‘For what reason has Adonoy done so to this land and to this Beis Hamikdosh?’

וְאָמְר֗וּ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָזְב֜וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצִ֣יא אֶת־אֲבֹתָם֮ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֒יִם֒ וַֽיַּחֲזִ֙קוּ֙ בֵּאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים (וישתחו) [וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲו֥וּ] לָהֶ֖ם וַיַּעַבְדֻ֑ם עַל־כֵּ֗ן הֵבִ֤יא יְהֹוָה֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת כׇּל־הָרָעָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃{פ}

And they will say, ‘Because they abandoned Adonoy, their God Who took out their fathers from the land of Egypt, and they took hold of other gods, and bowed to them, and worshipped them. Therefore, Adonoy, their god brought upon them all this evil.


###### I Kings 9:10

וַיְהִ֗י מִקְצֵה֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־בָּנָ֥ה שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה אֶת־שְׁנֵ֣י הַבָּתִּ֑ים אֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהֹוָ֖ה וְאֶת־בֵּ֥ית הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

It was at the end of twenty years that Shlomo built the two houses; the Beis Hamikdosh of Adonoy and the house of the king.


###### I Kings 9:11

חִירָ֣ם מֶֽלֶךְ־צֹ֠ר נִשָּׂ֨א אֶת־שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה בַּעֲצֵי֩ אֲרָזִ֨ים וּבַעֲצֵ֧י בְרוֹשִׁ֛ים וּבַזָּהָ֖ב לְכׇל־חֶפְצ֑וֹ אָ֡ז יִתֵּן֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה לְחִירָם֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים עִ֔יר בְּאֶ֖רֶץ הַגָּלִֽיל׃

Chirom, king of Tzor, provided Shlomo with cedar wood, and cypress wood and as much gold as he desired. Then Shlomo ha Melech gave Chirom twenty cities in the land of the Gallil.


###### I Kings 9:12

וַיֵּצֵ֤א חִירָם֙ מִצֹּ֔ר לִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַן־ל֖וֹ שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וְלֹ֥א יָשְׁר֖וּ בְּעֵינָֽיו׃

Chirom left Tzor to see the cities that Shlomo had given to him and they did not please him.


###### I Kings 9:13

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מָ֚ה הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּה לִּ֖י אָחִ֑י וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶם֙ אֶ֣רֶץ כָּב֔וּל עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃{פ}

And he said [to Shlomo], “What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?” So he called them the land of Kovul to this day.


###### I Kings 9:14

וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח חִירָ֖ם לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ מֵאָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים כִּכַּ֥ר זָהָֽב׃

Then Chirom sent to the king one hundred twenty measures of gold.

וְזֶ֨ה דְבַר־הַמַּ֜ס אֲשֶֽׁר־הֶעֱלָ֣ה**׀** הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה לִבְנוֹת֩ אֶת־בֵּ֨ית יְהֹוָ֤ה וְאֶת־בֵּיתוֹ֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּלּ֔וֹא וְאֵ֖ת חוֹמַ֣ת יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וְאֶת־חָצֹ֥ר וְאֶת־מְגִדּ֖וֹ וְאֶת־גָּֽזֶר׃

And this is the review of the tax that Shlomo ha Melech imposed [in order] to build the Beis Hamikdosh of Adonoy, and his own house, the Millo, and the walls of Yerushalayim, and Chotzor, Megido and Gezer.


###### I Kings 9:16

פַּרְעֹ֨ה מֶלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֜יִם עָלָ֗ה וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד אֶת־גֶּ֙זֶר֙ וַיִּשְׂרְפָ֣הּ בָּאֵ֔שׁ וְאֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י הַיֹּשֵׁ֥ב בָּעִ֖יר הָרָ֑ג וַֽיִּתְּנָהּ֙ שִׁלֻּחִ֔ים לְבִתּ֖וֹ אֵ֥שֶׁת שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃

Pharoah, king of Egypt, had gone up and conquered Gezer and burnt it with fire, and the Canaanites that lived in the city he killed; and he gave it as a present to his daughter, the wife of Shlomo.

וַיִּ֤בֶן שְׁלֹמֹה֙ אֶת־גָּ֔זֶר וְאֶת־בֵּ֥ית חֹרֹ֖ן תַּחְתּֽוֹן׃

And Shlomo built Gezer and the lower Beis Choron.


###### I Kings 9:18

וְאֶֽת־בַּעֲלָ֛ת וְאֶת־[תַּדְמֹ֥ר] (תמר) בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

And [also] Baalos and Tadmor, in the desert of the land.


###### I Kings 9:19

וְאֵ֨ת כׇּל־עָרֵ֤י הַֽמִּסְכְּנוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֣וּ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה וְאֵת֙ עָרֵ֣י הָרֶ֔כֶב וְאֵ֖ת עָרֵ֣י הַפָּרָשִׁ֑ים וְאֵ֣ת**׀** חֵ֣שֶׁק שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָשַׁק֙ לִבְנ֤וֹת בִּירוּשָׁלַ֙͏ִם֙ וּבַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֥רֶץ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃

And all the storage cities that Shlomo possessed, and the cities of [his] chariots, and the cities of his cavalry, and the desires of Shlomo that he desired to build in Yerushalayim, in Lebanon and in all the land of his dominion.

כׇּל־הָ֠עָ֠ם הַנּוֹתָ֨ר מִן־הָאֱמֹרִ֜י הַחִתִּ֤י הַפְּרִזִּי֙ הַחִוִּ֣י וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵֽמָּה׃

All the people that remained from the Emorites, the Chitites, the Perezites, the Chivites and the Yevuzites were not part of the Bnei Yisroel.


###### I Kings 9:21

בְּנֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר נֹתְר֤וּ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹא־יָכְל֛וּ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַחֲרִימָ֑ם וַיַּעֲלֵ֤ם שְׁלֹמֹה֙ לְמַס־עֹבֵ֔ד עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Their children who remained after them in the land whom the Bnei Yisroel were unable to annihilate, [of them] Shlomo levied a tax of labor to this day.


###### I Kings 9:22

וּמִבְּנֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹא־נָתַ֥ן שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה עָ֑בֶד כִּי־הֵ֞ם אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַֽעֲבָדָיו֙ וְשָׂרָ֣יו וְשָׁלִישָׁ֔יו וְשָׂרֵ֥י רִכְבּ֖וֹ וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃{ס}

[However] from the Bnei Yisroel, Shlomo did not place [any type] of servitude; for they were men of war, his servants, his officers, his aides, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry.


###### I Kings 9:23

אֵ֣לֶּה**׀** שָׂרֵ֣י הַנִּצָּבִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר עַל־הַמְּלָאכָה֙ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת הָרֹדִ֣ים בָּעָ֔ם הָעֹשִׂ֖ים בַּמְּלָאכָֽה׃

These were the supervising officers that over saw the work for Shlomo, [there were] five hundred and fifty [of them], who controlled the people who did the work.


###### I Kings 9:24

אַ֣ךְ בַּת־פַּרְעֹ֗ה עָֽלְתָה֙ מֵעִ֣יר דָּוִ֔ד אֶל־בֵּיתָ֖הּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּֽנָה־לָ֑הּ אָ֖ז בָּנָ֥ה אֶת־הַמִּלּֽוֹא׃

Only then did the daughter of Pharaoh come up from the city of Dovid to her house that Shlomo had built for her, it was then that he built the Millo.


###### I Kings 9:25

וְהֶעֱלָ֣ה שְׁלֹמֹ֡ה שָׁלֹשׁ֩ פְּעָמִ֨ים בַּשָּׁנָ֜ה עֹל֣וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֗ים עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּנָ֣ה לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה וְהַקְטֵ֣יר אִתּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וְשִׁלַּ֖ם אֶת־הַבָּֽיִת׃

Three times a year Shlomo brought up [offered] burnt-offerings and peace offerings on the Altar that he built to Adonoy and he burnt incense [offerings] with it [upon the altar] that was before Adonoy, and thus he completed the House.

וׇאֳנִ֡י עָשָׂה֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה בְּעֶצְיֽוֹן־גֶּ֨בֶר אֲשֶׁ֧ר אֶת־אֵל֛וֹת עַל־שְׂפַ֥ת יַם־ס֖וּף בְּאֶ֥רֶץ אֱדֽוֹם׃

Shlomo ha Melech had a ship constructed in Etyyon-gever, which is near Eilos, on the shore of the Reed Sea in the land of Edom.


###### I Kings 9:27

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח חִירָ֤ם בׇּֽאֳנִי֙ אֶת־עֲבָדָ֔יו אַנְשֵׁ֣י אֳנִיּ֔וֹת יֹדְעֵ֖י הַיָּ֑ם עִ֖ם עַבְדֵ֥י שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃

And Chirom sent his servants in the ship, they were sailors, who were experts of the sea, [he sent them] with the servants of Shlomo.


###### I Kings 9:28

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אוֹפִ֔ירָה וַיִּקְח֤וּ מִשָּׁם֙ זָהָ֔ב אַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים כִּכָּ֑ר וַיָּבִ֖אוּ אֶל־הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃{פ}

They came to ophir and took from there for hundred measures of gold, and they delivered it to Shlomo haMelech.
