רב שרירא גאון בן חנניה גאון פומבדיתא¹ השיב בשנת רצ"ח לשטרות² לרב יעקב בר נסים מקירואן על שאלתו "כיצד נכתבה המשנה" והתוספתא והברייתות והתלמוד, וכיצד נסדרו רבנן סבוראי אחר רבינא ומי מלך אחריהם – תשובה ארוכה ומפורטת, תשובה שהיא יסוד כל מדע־התלמוד, בין מן הצד הכרונולוגי, שמסרה לנו רשימות עתיקות מ"ספרי הזכרונות" של ראשי הישיבות³, ובין מצד חקר־המקורות של המשנה והתלמוד, שרש"ג היה הראשון, וגם האחרון בראשונים ואחרונים, שחקר את תולדות המשנה והתלמוד מתוך המקורות עצמם כמבקר מומחה, מעמיק וחודר לתוך־תוכם של הדברים: מחקר יחיד במינו במקוריותו, בעמקותו ופשטותו, החודר לתוך־תוכן של הפרובלימות.

ותיכף אחרי שיצאה אגרת רש"ג בח"מ (=חפש מטמונים) לב"ג (= בער גאלדבערג) מכ"י ברלין בנוסח אחר, בדקו החכמים (ר' ישראל חזן, שזח"ה, ועוד) ומצאו שישנן לפנינו שתי נוסחאות השונות בדעותיהן: לפי האחת נכתבה המשנה ונכתב התלמוד, ולפי השניה לא נכתבו עד הימים האחרונים. ומכיון שמצאו שנחלקו בזה חכמי "ספרד" (ר' שמואל הנגיד, הרמב"ם ועוד) וחכמי "צרפת" (רש"י, ר' משה מקוצי בעל סמ"ג ועוד) – באו והחליטו שנוסח היוחסין והשייכים לו הוא הנוסח **העקרי**, "נוסח **ספרד**", ונוסח ח"מ וחבריו הוא – נוסח **מתוקן ומוגה** לפי דעתם של ח"צ, "נוסח **צרפת**".

כלומר שברייתות אלו הן הברייתות ששנו חכמים (האמוראים וחכמי הישיבות) **ואחזו** בהן¹⁰, בניגוד לברייתות אחרות שאינן מיסוד תלמידי ר"ע. וכך הוא אומר בעמ' 39 נ"צ: וכד חזו רבנן דבריתא דלאו ר' חייה ור' אושעיה אית בהי שבשתא וכו' והני דתריצונין ר' חייה ור' אושעיה עדיפן מכולהי **לקטונין** רבנן ותנונין בי רבנן ועליהון אמרינן בגמרא תנו רבנן, וכו'. אבל הספרדי טעה בפירוש הדברים ונסח אותן: והני ברייתא דתוספתא וספרא וספרי אילין ברייתא כולהו **הוו תנו להו רבנן קמאי ואתו ר' יהודה ור' נחמיה ור' שמעון**¹¹ וליקוטינון¹² **כל חד וחד מינהו דיליה, ספרא ר' יהודה תוספתא ר' נחמיה ספרי ר' שמעון ומתני' ר' מאיר וכלהו אליבא דר' עקיבא כי כולם תלמידי ר' עקיבא הם**. אבל וכו'. כך הפך ושינה כוונת רש"ג ע"י טעות בפירוש מלה ארמית, והרחיב את הדברים בלשון אחרת לגמרי.

והנה רב נתן הבבלי מספר²⁸: ונפטר ראש גלות (דוד בן זכאי) ובקשו להנהיג בנו (יהודה) במקומו ולא עמד אחריו של אביו אלא ז' חדשים בלבד ונפטר גם הוא והיה לו בן קטן ("יחזקיהו") כמו בן י"ב שנים ואספו אליו רב סעדיה ונתן אותו בבית הספר עד שנפטר רב סעדיה (בשנת **רנ"ג** לשטרות). **ולא נמצא באותן הימים מי שהיה ראוי להיות ראש גלות** וכו'.
