מנהג־קדמונים זה, כינוס תורתו של חכם "כדי לצרפם שלא ישתכחו" (רש"י), – ברכה יתירה בו אם השאיר החכם אחריו דברים שבכתב, חיבורים שלמים ואפי' רשימות והערות, כי לבם של ראשונים כפתחו של היכל, וק"ו אם היכל זה – ס"ת מונח בו. לפיכך נעתרתי לבקשת חברַי ותלמידיו ומוקירי תורתו של מו"ר זצ"ל והעזתי להוסיף על מצות מורי ואספתי לתוך הספר הזה גם הערות ורשימות, שנמצאו באוצרו (לא הבאתי הערות של ח"ג ומראי מקומות והקבלות), כי כל הערה שלו מאירה את עיני הלומד.

ידעתי גם ידעתי, שאין שלמות בדברים הניתנים כאן. אילו זכינו, שהמחבר ז"ל יכין את הספר לדפוס בידיו – בוודאי היה משנה הרבה, מוסיף וגורע, לאור מחקריו המעמיקים, שהרי רובם של הדברים האצורים בספר זה נכתבו ונאמרו לפני יותר משלשים שנה, ובשנים אלו נתעשרה חכמת ישראל בגניזות שיצאו לאור עולם ובסתומות שנתגלו ונתפרשו.

המבוא לירושלמי למשל, אינו אלא פתיחה לסמינריון, שנכתבה בקיץ תרפ"ו, וכמה דברים נתחדשו מאז ע"י המחבר ז"ל במחקריו וע"י רעו הגדול ר"ל גינצבורג ז"ל, והגדיל לעשות הגאון הר"ש ליברמן יבלח"א (וכן בשנת תש"ג הו"ל הרב מרדכי י. ליב זק"ש "דקדוקי סופרים" לתלמוד הירושלמי, חלק ראשון, מסכת ברכות).

כיו"ב המבואות למסכות מן הבבלי הם חלק מפתיחות למסכות התלמוד, שלימד בסמינריונים, וגם הם נכתבו לפני יותר משלשים שנה. המבוא לפסחים למשל נכתב בשנת תרפ"ז. לכל מבוא, שקרא לו "פתיחה", הקדיש כארבעה שעורים, שבהם דבר על המשנה של אותה מסכת (חלקים אלו נדפסו ב"מבואות לספרות התנאים") ועל תלמודה. בדבריו אלו פתח לנו דרך ללימוד שיטתי ומעמיק באותה מסכת: ניתוח הסוגיא, השוואת הבבלי לירושלמי, בירור דברי הלכה ואגדה ודיוק בענייני לשון וסגנון.

רובן של הפתיחות היו מקשה אחת, ואני חלקתין לפרקים, וקבעתי לפרקים כותרות (בין סוגריים מרובעים). אך לא שניתי את הסגגון – סגנון הרצאה.

ולדבר זה ישימו לב כל הבאים להשיג על דבריו, וכבר למדונו חז"ל "אין משיבין את הארי לאחר מיתה". ומה נפלאה התנהגותו של ר' יהושע כלפי בן־מחלוקתו ר' אליעזר לאחר פטירתו: "ואבן אחת היתה שם והיתה מיוחדת לו לישיבה פעם אחת נכנס ר' יהושע התחיל נושק אותה האבן ואמר האבן הזאת דומה להר סיני וזה שישב עליה דומה לארון הברית" (שהש"ר). דברי הכמינו ומעשיהם יהיו לנגד עינינו בבקרנו דברי אחד מגדולי הדור לאחר פטירתו.
