ספר זה על שלשת חלקיו נדפס מתוך כתב ידו של מו"ר זצ"ל. כתחילה נכתבו הדברים לשם הרצאה, אבל דבריו היו ערוכים אף כשכתבם לשם הרצאה, וגם בהם היה כל משפט ומשפט ברור ובהיר. לא הייתי מקבל עלי תפקיד קשה ואחראי זה, עריכת כתבי מו"ר זצ"ל, דהא "לא קאי איניש אדעתיה דרביה עד ארבעין שנין" (ע"ז ה ב), אלמלא מצות מו"ר בצוואתו (מיום י"ט באלול תרצ"ו), שקרא לה "**זכרון דברים** לסדור כ"י שלי", וז"ל:

… אם לא אספיק חלילה לגמור את ספרי "מבוא לנוסח המשנה", הריני מבקש למסור את כל החומר לסידור לגיסי ד"ר ב. די־פריס בצירוף עם תלמידי החביב מר ע. צ. מלמד, הבקי בספרַי ובכתבַי, והם ישתדלו לגמור סידורו. החלק השני "מבוא למשנה" צריך עוד עיבוד וסידור, וכך הוא המצב גם במבואי למורשי הלכה, וכן ב"דקדוק ארמית־בבלית". הכל ימסר לעריכה להנ"ל.

הוא **אינו** מבוא לתורה שבעל־פה. זה עוסק בתולדות תורה שבע"פ, התהוותה והתפתחותה, לבָתֶּיהָ ומקורותיה השונים: משנה, תוספתא, מדרשי־הלכה ושני התלמודים; ההלכה שבפפירוסים הארמיים, באפוקריפיים, אצל פילון ויוספוס. הוא אינו גם "מבוא לתלמוד", אפילו לא חלק ראשון שלו (ובטעות ניתן לו שם זה); "מבוא לתלמוד" **בלשוננו** אינו Die Entstehung des Talmuds, אלא מבוא לתלמוד **הבבלי**, או לתלמוד **הירושלמי**, או לשניהם יחד: תולדות התהוות **הספר**, התחלותיו, עריכותיו השונות וסידורו האחרון.

שמעתי לעצת חבריי וסדרתי מפתחות מפורטים, שיהיו לעזר רב לכל לומד בספר (מו"ר קצר את המפתחות ל"מבוא לנוסח המשנה" מסבות שהזמן גרמן, ועל זאת ידווה לב כל חכם וחוקר הלומד בספר ונזקק לו בשאלות שהוא דן בהן). לא הָכנסו למפתחות כל המשניות והתוספתות, שפורשו במקומן (עירובין, ר"ה וכלים).
