בברייתא (נדה כד ב) שנינו: תניא אבא שאול אומר קובר מתים הייתי פעם אחת נפתחה מערה תחתי ועמדתי בגלגל עינו של מת עד חוטמי וכו' ושמא תאמר אבא שאול ננס היה – אבא שאול ארוך בדורו היה ור' טרפון מגיע לכתפו ור' טרפון ארוך בדורו היה [ור' עקיבא מגיע לכתפו ור"ע ארוך בדורו היה]⁵ ור"מ מגיע לכתפו ור"מ ארוך בדורו היה ורבי מגיע לכתפו וכו' – אין כוונתה של הברייתא כלל להודיע לנו בזה ירידת הקומה מדור לדור⁶, אלא לתת דוגמא חיה לבן־הדור של הברייתא, שהיה בן דורם של **תלמידי רבי** (השאר נוסף בבבלי על הברייתא). אבל מן הברייתא יוצא בכל־זאת, שאבא שאול עמד **בסביבתו של ר' טרפון** כחבירו של ר"ט–ר"ע, וכר"מ תלמידו של ר"ע לר"ע, וכרבי לר"מ (אע"פ שרבי ראה אותו רק פעם אחת מאחוריו)⁷, ולא הקדימוהו לאבא שאול לפני ר"ט אלא מפני שבאו לספר כאן על אבא שאול⁸.

"אמרו לו" זה, הוא **ר"מ**, שנותן טעם "כדי שתהא הרוח מנשבת ביניהן", אבל לר' יהודה אין כאן בכלל ריוח באמצע.

בניגוד לסתם משנה, פי"א מי"א: הרי זה יפר, מי"ב: **בראשונה היו אומרים** ג' נשים יוצאות ונוטלות כתובה וכו' נטולה אני מן היהודים, **חזרו לומר** וכו' יפר חלקו וכו'. וסתם משנה זו היא ר' יוסי, בבלי פב א: משום דנטולה אני מן היהודים ר' יוסי קתני לה דאמר רב הונא כוליה פירקין ר' יוסי. וא"כ משנת ר' נתן כאן היא "משנה ראשונה".

במשנת ר' נתן השתמש גם בעל **ספרי זוטא**. מדרש זה נסדר בבית מדרשו של **ראב"י**⁷⁶, ומשניותיו **אינן** מתאימות כלל למשנתנו; ואנו יודעים שהשתמש במשנת **ר' יוסי** (עי' לעיל, 128), אבל השתמש גם במשנת **ר' נתן**. כמה **סתמות** של מדרש ישנם בו שהם מדרשו של **ר"נ**⁷⁷. אבל גם במשנתו של ר"נ השתמש, ויש בו ציטאט ברור ממשנת ר"נ:

ס"ז 284: מכאן אמרו עיסת כלבים שהרועים אוכלין ממנה חייבת בחלה וכו' (כבחלה פ"א מ"ח) ויוצא בה משום מצה **וחייב עליה משום חמץ**⁷⁸, **ונקחת בכסף מעשר**⁷⁹ **ומטמא טומאת אוכלין** ואם אין הרועים אוכלין ממנה אינם חייבים בחלה וכו' (ז"א: ואין מערבין בה וכו' **ואין** מטמאה טומאת אוכלים).
