בתורה לא נתפרשה "חגיגה" כלל, אלא שאמרה (שמ' יב יד, ויק' כג מא): **וחגֹתם** אֹתו חג וגו'¹, שבעת ימים **תחֹג** וגו' (דב' טז טו)². ואין "חגג" אלא לשון **זביחת קרבנות**, בנין־אב לכולם: שלח את עמי **ויחגו** לי במדבר (שמ' ה א), ולהלן הוא אומר: **ונזבחה** לה' אלקינו (שם ה ג), וזבחנו לה' אלקינו (שם ח כג), גם אתה תתן בידֵנו **זבחים ועלת** ועשינו לה' אלקינו (שם י כה), **בצאננו ובבקרנו** נלך כי **חג** ה' לנו (שם י ט), הא אין חגג אלא זביחת־קרבנות (בבלי חגיגה י ע"ב). וכך אמרו בירושלמי³: **לשון** חגיגה נוהגת לפני הדיבור, שלח את עמי **ויחוגו** לי במדבר.

בזמן הבית נזכרת "חגיגה" (שעם הפסח) ראשונה בברייתא עתיקה (פסח' ע ע"ב), בפי **יהודה בן דורתאי**: יהודה בן דורתאי פירש הוא ודורתאי בנו והלך וישב לו בדרום ("בלוד"), אמר אם יבוא אליהו ויאמר להם לישראל מפני מה לא חגגתם חגיגה בשבת מה הן אומרים לו? תמהני על **שני גדולי הדור שמעיה ואבטליון** שהן חכמים גדולים ודרשנין גדולים ולא אמרו להן לישראל חגיגה דוחה את השבת.

ואחת הדרשות שדרש **הלל** ("ודרש והסכים ועלה וקיבל הלכה") **עד שלא עלה** לא"י, היא: כתוב אחד אומר וזבחת פסח לי"י אלהיך צאן ובקר (דב' טז ב). וכת' אחד או' מן הכבשים ומן העזים תקחו (שמ' יב ה). הא כיצד צאן לפסח, **וצאן** ובקר **לחגיגה**⁴, או: צאן לפסח **ובקר** לחגיגה⁵ ור' ישמעאל אומר⁶: בחגיגה הבאה **עם** הפסח⁷ הכתוב מדבר.

התורה אמרה: ועשית חג שבועות לה' אלהיך **מסת נדבת ידך אשר** תתן כאשר יברכך ה' אלהיך **ושמחת** לפני ה' אלהיך וגו' (דב' טז י–יא), חג הסכות וגו' **ושמחת** בחגך וגו' שבעת ימים תָחֹג לה' אלהיך וגו' והיית אך **שמח** (שם יג–טו). ואמרו בספרי¹²: **ר' יוסי הגלילי אומר** שלש מצות נוהגות ברגל ואילו הם חגיגה וראייה **ושמחה**, יש בראייה מה שאין כן בשתיהן ויש בחגיגה מה שאין כן בשתיהן, ויש בשמחה מה שאין בשתיהן. ראייה כולה לגבוה מה שאין כן בשתיהן, חגיגה נוהגת לפני הדבֵר ולאחר הדבר מה שאין כן בשתיהן, שמחה נוהגת באנשים ובנשים (בתוס' עוד: ונוהגת כל שבעה) מה שאין כן בשתיהן, ובירוש' שם שנינו: וכשמחה מה שאין כן בשניהן, שהשמחה נוהגת **בין בדבר שהוא משלו בין בדבר שהוא משל אחרים, בין בדבר שדרכו לכן** ("שראוי לקרבן") **בין בדבר שאין דרכו לכן**, ואילו אינן נוהגין אלא משלו ובלבד מדבר שדרכו לכן¹³, ואמרו (שם): רבי יהושע בן לוי אמר ושמחת אפילו **ממקולין**; אבל בספרי שם שנינו¹⁴: ושמחת לפני הי אלהיך נאמר כאן שמחה ונאמר להלן (דב' כז ז) שמחה מה שמחה האמורה להלן שלמים ("וזבחת שלמים ואכלת שם ושמחת לפני ה' אלהיך") אף שמחה האמורה כאן שלמים. ושם¹⁵ שנינו: ושמחת בכל מיני שמחות יבול אף בעופות ובמנחות וכו'.

אבל "קודם **עד שלא גזרו** רביעי בקודש"²³ שאל חגי הנביא את הכהנים תורה (חגי ב יב–יג): הן ישא איש בשר קדש בכנף בגדו ("הטמא לקודש") ונגע בכנפו ("**או** נגע בכנפו") אל הלחם ואל (כלומר: **או** אל) הנזיד ("נזיד הקודש", טהרות שם) ואל היין ואל שמן ואל כל מאכל היקדש ("היפסל") ויענו הכהנים ויאמרו לא. ויאמר חגי אם יגע טמא נפש ("טמא מת") **בכל אלה** (בשר – לחם וגו') היטמא ויענו הכהנים ויאמרו יטמא.
