ו"לא נתפרש כאן אם היא מצות דורות או לשעה למשה במדבר" (רמב"ן שם) בשעת מפקד העם, ורק בשעת מפקד. אבל כבר סופר דברי הימים (דהי"ב כד ו ואילך) אומר: ויקרא המלך (יואש) ליהוידע הראש ויאמר לו מדוע לא דרשת על הלוים להביא מיהודה ומירושלים את **מַשאת משה** עבד ה' והקהל לישראל **לאהל העדות** וגו'. ויתנו קול ביהודה ובירושלם להביא לה' **משאת משה** וגו'. מכאן נראה ש"משאת משה מצוה לדורות להביא לבדק הבית אע"פ שלא ימנם" (רמב"ן). כך פירשו כבר בימים ההם את הכתוב בתורה, ודרשו את הכתוב במלכים ב' (יב ה ואילך): כסף **עובר**¹, איש כסף נפשות ערכו – כתרגומו: כסף **תקליא** דעבר על מנין גבריא, כסף פורקן נפשתא וכו', "שׁני כספים יש כאן: כסף עובר הוא **כסף** **השקלים שבכל שנה** שנאמר בו כל העובר על הפקודים ואיש שיתנדב ערך נפשו האומר ערכי עלי" (רש"י).

"**שלישית** השקל", מפני שהמטבע של אותו זמן היה מטבע **פרסי**, והשקל הבבלי־פרסי **אינו** מתחלק לחצאים ורבעים אלא **לשלישית** וששית, ובכלל לא היתה לשקלים "קצבה" כעדותו של **ר' יהודה**: שכשעלו ישראל מן הגולה² היו שוקלים דרכונות, חזרו לשקול סלעים (ארבעה דינרין) חורו לשקול טבעין (=חצי סלע, ה"שקל" של המשנה) ובקשו לשקול דינרין³, ולא קיבלו מהן מן הדא והעמדנו עלינו מצות לתת שלישית השקל בשנה וכו'⁴. ה"שקל" של המשנה הוא כאמור חצי סלע, שני דינרי־כסף⁵, δίδραχμον ביונית⁶, ובהתאם למצב המטבק של הזמן הזה תירגמו השבעים כל "שקל" שבתנ"ך ע"י δίδραχμον, אע"פ שה"דידרכמון" הוא באמת "**מחצית** השקל" של התנ"ך.

השקלים **שמבבל** נזכרים גם במשנה (פ"ג מ"ד): תרם את הראשונה ("תרומה ראשונה") לשם א"י ושניה לשום כרכים המוקפין לה והשלישית לשום **בבל** ולשום מדי ולשום מדינות הרחוקות. ובתוס' פ"ב ד' (וירוש' שם) שנינו: זו היתה עשירה מכולן שהיו שם ("בה") איצטראות של זהב ודרכונות של זהב.
