## Isaiah Chapter 28

###### Isaiah 28:1

ה֗וֹי עֲטֶ֤רֶת גֵּאוּת֙ שִׁכֹּרֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְצִ֥יץ נֹבֵ֖ל צְבִ֣י תִפְאַרְתּ֑וֹ אֲשֶׁ֛ר עַל־רֹ֥אשׁ גֵּֽיא־שְׁמָנִ֖ים הֲל֥וּמֵי יָֽיִן׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards Efrayim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty which is at the head of the rich valley of those who are overcome with wine!


###### Isaiah 28:2

הִנֵּ֨ה חָזָ֤ק וְאַמִּץ֙ לַֽאדֹנָ֔י כְּזֶ֥רֶם בָּרָ֖ד שַׂ֣עַר קָ֑טֶב כְּ֠זֶ֠רֶם מַ֣יִם כַּבִּירִ֥ים שֹׁטְפִ֛ים הִנִּ֥יחַ לָאָ֖רֶץ בְּיָֽד׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong, as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing; he will cast down to the earth with might.


###### Isaiah 28:3

בְּרַגְלַ֖יִם תֵּרָמַ֑סְנָה עֲטֶ֥רֶת גֵּא֖וּת שִׁכּוֹרֵ֥י אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

The crown of pride of the drunkards of Efrayim shall be trodden under feet:


###### Isaiah 28:4

וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה צִיצַ֤ת נֹבֵל֙ צְבִ֣י תִפְאַרְתּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־רֹ֖אשׁ גֵּ֣יא שְׁמָנִ֑ים כְּבִכּוּרָהּ֙ בְּטֶ֣רֶם קַ֔יִץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִרְאֶ֤ה הָרֹאֶה֙ אוֹתָ֔הּ בְּעוֹדָ֥הּ בְּכַפּ֖וֹ יִבְלָעֶֽנָּה׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and the fading flower of the glorious beauty, which is at the head of the rich valley, shall be as the first ripe fig before the summer; which when one sees, while it is yet in his hand he swallows it up.

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יִֽהְיֶה֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת לַעֲטֶ֣רֶת צְבִ֔י וְלִצְפִירַ֖ת תִּפְאָרָ֑ה לִשְׁאָ֖ר עַמּֽוֹ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, to the residue of his people,


###### Isaiah 28:6

וּלְר֖וּחַ מִשְׁפָּ֑ט לַיּוֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־הַמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט וְלִ֨גְבוּרָ֔ה מְשִׁיבֵ֥י מִלְחָמָ֖ה שָֽׁעְרָה׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and for a spirit of judgment to him that sits in judgment, and for strength to them that turn back the battle to the gate.


###### Isaiah 28:7

וְגַם־אֵ֙לֶּה֙ בַּיַּ֣יִן שָׁג֔וּ וּבַשֵּׁכָ֖ר תָּע֑וּ כֹּהֵ֣ן וְנָבִיא֩ שָׁג֨וּ בַשֵּׁכָ֜ר נִבְלְע֣וּ מִן־הַיַּ֗יִן תָּעוּ֙ מִן־הַשֵּׁכָ֔ר שָׁגוּ֙ בָּרֹאֶ֔ה פָּק֖וּ פְּלִילִיָּֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
But they also reel through wine, and stagger through strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel through strong drink, they are confused by wine, they stagger through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.


###### Isaiah 28:8

כִּ֚י כׇּל־שֻׁלְחָנ֔וֹת מָלְא֖וּ קִ֣יא צֹאָ֑ה בְּלִ֖י מָקֽוֹם׃{פ}

For all tables are full of vomit and filth, so that there is no place clean.


###### Isaiah 28:9

אֶת־מִי֙ יוֹרֶ֣ה דֵעָ֔ה וְאֶת־מִ֖י יָבִ֣ין שְׁמוּעָ֑ה גְּמוּלֵי֙ מֵחָלָ֔ב עַתִּיקֵ֖י מִשָּׁדָֽיִם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Whom shall one teach knowledge? and whom shall one make to understand doctrine? those that are weaned from the milk, and removed from the breasts?


###### Isaiah 28:10

כִּ֣י צַ֤ו לָצָו֙ צַ֣ו לָצָ֔ו קַ֥ו לָקָ֖ו קַ֣ו לָקָ֑ו זְעֵ֥יר שָׁ֖ם זְעֵ֥יר שָֽׁם׃

For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:


###### Isaiah 28:11

כִּ֚י בְּלַעֲגֵ֣י שָׂפָ֔ה וּבְלָשׁ֖וֹן אַחֶ֑רֶת יְדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּֽה׃

for with stammering lips and another tongue shall one speak to this people.


###### Isaiah 28:12

אֲשֶׁ֣ר**׀** אָמַ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם זֹ֤את הַמְּנוּחָה֙ הָנִ֣יחוּ לֶעָיֵ֔ף וְזֹ֖את הַמַּרְגֵּעָ֑ה וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּא שְׁמֽוֹעַ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
When he said to them, This is the rest; cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing: they would not hear.


###### Isaiah 28:13

וְהָיָ֨ה לָהֶ֜ם דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֗ה צַ֣ו לָצָ֞ו צַ֤ו לָצָו֙ קַ֤ו לָקָו֙ קַ֣ו לָקָ֔ו זְעֵ֥יר שָׁ֖ם זְעֵ֣יר שָׁ֑ם לְמַ֨עַן יֵלְכ֜וּ וְכָשְׁל֤וּ אָחוֹר֙ וְנִשְׁבָּ֔רוּ וְנוֹקְשׁ֖וּ וְנִלְכָּֽדוּ׃{פ}

Therefore the word of the Lord was to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.


###### Isaiah 28:14

לָכֵ֛ן שִׁמְע֥וּ דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אַנְשֵׁ֣י לָצ֑וֹן מֹֽשְׁלֵי֙ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, scornful men, that rule this people which is in Yerushalayim.


###### Isaiah 28:15

כִּ֣י אֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם כָּרַ֤תְנֽוּ בְרִית֙ אֶת־מָ֔וֶת וְעִם־שְׁא֖וֹל עָשִׂ֣ינוּ חֹזֶ֑ה (שיט) [שׁ֣וֹט] שׁוֹטֵ֤ף כִּי־[יַֽעֲבֹר֙] (עבר) לֹ֣א יְבוֹאֵ֔נוּ כִּ֣י שַׂ֧מְנוּ כָזָ֛ב מַחְסֵ֖נוּ וּבַשֶּׁ֥קֶר נִסְתָּֽרְנוּ׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with She᾽ol are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come to us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:


###### Isaiah 28:16

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה הִנְנִ֛י יִסַּ֥ד בְּצִיּ֖וֹן אָ֑בֶן אֶ֣בֶן בֹּ֜חַן פִּנַּ֤ת יִקְרַת֙ מוּסָ֣ד מוּסָּ֔ד הַֽמַּאֲמִ֖ין לֹ֥א יָחִֽישׁ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Żiyyon for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believes shall not make haste.


###### Isaiah 28:17

וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י מִשְׁפָּט֙ לְקָ֔ו וּצְדָקָ֖ה לְמִשְׁקָ֑לֶת וְיָעָ֤ה בָרָד֙ מַחְסֵ֣ה כָזָ֔ב וְסֵ֥תֶר מַ֖יִם יִשְׁטֹֽפוּ׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Judgment also will I lay by a line, and righteousness by a plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters shall overflow the hiding place.


###### Isaiah 28:18

וְכֻפַּ֤ר בְּרִֽיתְכֶם֙ אֶת־מָ֔וֶת וְחָזוּתְכֶ֥ם אֶת־שְׁא֖וֹל לֹ֣א תָק֑וּם שׁ֤וֹט שׁוֹטֵף֙ כִּ֣י יַֽעֲבֹ֔ר וִהְיִ֥יתֶם ל֖וֹ לְמִרְמָֽס׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with She᾽ol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then you shall be trodden down by it.


###### Isaiah 28:19

מִדֵּ֤י עׇבְרוֹ֙ יִקַּ֣ח אֶתְכֶ֔ם כִּֽי־בַבֹּ֧קֶר בַּבֹּ֛קֶר יַעֲבֹ֖ר בַּיּ֣וֹם וּבַלָּ֑יְלָה וְהָיָ֥ה רַק־זְוָעָ֖ה הָבִ֥ין שְׁמוּעָֽה׃

As often as it goes forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and the mere understanding of the report shall bring terror.

כִּֽי־קָצַ֥ר הַמַּצָּ֖ע מֵהִשְׂתָּרֵ֑עַ וְהַמַּסֵּכָ֥ה צָ֖רָה כְּהִתְכַּנֵּֽס׃

For the bed is too short for a man to stretch himself; and the covering too narrow for him to wrap himself up.


###### Isaiah 28:21

כִּ֤י כְהַר־פְּרָצִים֙ יָק֣וּם יְהֹוָ֔ה כְּעֵ֖מֶק בְּגִבְע֣וֹן יִרְגָּ֑ז לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת מַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ זָ֣ר מַעֲשֵׂ֔הוּ וְלַֽעֲבֹד֙ עֲבֹ֣דָת֔וֹ נׇכְרִיָּ֖ה עֲבֹדָתֽוֹ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perażim, he shall be full of anger as in the valley of Giv῾on, that he may do his work, though strange be his work; and bring to pass his act, though strange be his act.


###### Isaiah 28:22

וְעַתָּה֙ אַל־תִּתְלוֹצָ֔צוּ פֶּֽן־יֶחְזְק֖וּ מֽוֹסְרֵיכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־כָלָ֨ה וְנֶחֱרָצָ֜ה שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי מֵאֵ֨ת אֲדֹנָ֧י יֱהֹוִ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת עַל־כׇּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃{פ}

Now therefore be not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts that destruction is decreed upon the whole land.


###### Isaiah 28:23

הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ וְשִׁמְע֖וּ קוֹלִ֑י הַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ וְשִׁמְע֖וּ אִמְרָתִֽי׃

Give ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.


###### Isaiah 28:24

הֲכֹ֣ל הַיּ֔וֹם יַחֲרֹ֥שׁ הַחֹרֵ֖שׁ לִזְרֹ֑עַ יְפַתַּ֥ח וִֽישַׂדֵּ֖ד אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃

Does the plowman all day plow to sow? open and harrow his ground?


###### Isaiah 28:25

הֲלוֹא֙ אִם־שִׁוָּ֣ה פָנֶ֔יהָ וְהֵפִ֥יץ קֶ֖צַח וְכַמֹּ֣ן יִזְרֹ֑ק וְשָׂ֨ם חִטָּ֤ה שׂוֹרָה֙ וּשְׂעֹרָ֣ה נִסְמָ֔ן וְכֻסֶּ֖מֶת גְּבֻלָתֽוֹ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
When he has prepared a smooth surface, does he not then scatter the black seeds, and cast the cummin, and throw in wheat by rows, and barley in the marked spot, and spelt along its border.


###### Isaiah 28:26

וְיִסְּר֥וֹ לַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט אֱלֹהָ֥יו יוֹרֶֽנּוּ׃

And he strictly raises it according to the method prescribed; his God instructs him.


###### Isaiah 28:27

כִּ֣י לֹ֤א בֶחָרוּץ֙ י֣וּדַשׁ קֶ֔צַח וְאוֹפַ֣ן עֲגָלָ֔ה עַל־כַּמֹּ֖ן יוּסָּ֑ב כִּ֧י בַמַּטֶּ֛ה יֵחָ֥בֶט קֶ֖צַח וְכַמֹּ֥ן בַּשָּֽׁבֶט׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For the black seeds are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the black crop is beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.


###### Isaiah 28:28

לֶ֣חֶם יוּדָ֔ק כִּ֛י לֹ֥א לָנֶ֖צַח אָד֣וֹשׁ יְדוּשֶׁ֑נּוּ וְ֠הָמַ֠ם גִּלְגַּ֧ל עֶגְלָת֛וֹ וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו לֹ֥א יְדֻקֶּֽנּוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Is the bread corn crushed? No, he will not ever be threshing it; and when he drives the wheel of his cart and his horses over it, he does not crush it.


###### Isaiah 28:29

גַּם־זֹ֕את מֵעִ֛ם יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת יָצָ֑אָה הִפְלִ֣א עֵצָ֔ה הִגְדִּ֖יל תּוּשִׁיָּֽה׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
This also came from the Lord of hosts. He is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.
