## Isaiah Chapter 29

###### Isaiah 29:1

ה֚וֹי אֲרִיאֵ֣ל אֲרִיאֵ֔ל קִרְיַ֖ת חָנָ֣ה דָוִ֑ד סְפ֥וּ שָׁנָ֛ה עַל־שָׁנָ֖ה חַגִּ֥ים יִנְקֹֽפוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Ho Ari᾽el, Ari᾽el, the city where David encamped! add year to year; let the feasts come round.


###### Isaiah 29:2

וַהֲצִיק֖וֹתִי לַאֲרִיאֵ֑ל וְהָיְתָ֤ה תַֽאֲנִיָּה֙ וַאֲנִיָּ֔ה וְהָ֥יְתָה לִּ֖י כַּאֲרִיאֵֽל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Yet I will distress Ari᾽el, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: yet it shall be to me as an Ari᾽el (altar hearth).


###### Isaiah 29:3

וְחָנִ֥יתִי כַדּ֖וּר עָלָ֑יִךְ וְצַרְתִּ֤י עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ מֻצָּ֔ב וַהֲקִימֹתִ֥י עָלַ֖יִךְ מְצֻרֹֽת׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mound, and I will raise siege works against thee.


###### Isaiah 29:4

וְשָׁפַלְתְּ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי וּמֵעָפָ֖ר תִּשַּׁ֣ח אִמְרָתֵ֑ךְ וְֽ֠הָיָ֠ה כְּא֤וֹב מֵאֶ֙רֶץ֙ קוֹלֵ֔ךְ וּמֵעָפָ֖ר אִמְרָתֵ֥ךְ תְּצַפְצֵֽף׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of a medium, out of the ground, and thy speech shall chirp out of the dust.


###### Isaiah 29:5

וְהָיָ֛ה כְּאָבָ֥ק דַּ֖ק הֲמ֣וֹן זָרָ֑יִךְ וּכְמֹ֤ץ עֹבֵר֙ הֲמ֣וֹן עָרִיצִ֔ים וְהָיָ֖ה לְפֶ֥תַע פִּתְאֹֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Yet the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be like chaff that passes away: and it shall be in an instant suddenly.


###### Isaiah 29:6

מֵעִ֨ם יְהֹוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ תִּפָּקֵ֔ד בְּרַ֥עַם וּבְרַ֖עַשׁ וְק֣וֹל גָּד֑וֹל סוּפָה֙ וּסְעָרָ֔ה וְלַ֖הַב אֵ֥שׁ אוֹכֵלָֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Thou shalt be visited by the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.


###### Isaiah 29:7

וְהָיָ֗ה כַּֽחֲלוֹם֙ חֲז֣וֹן לַ֔יְלָה הֲמוֹן֙ כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִ֔ם הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים עַל־אֲרִיאֵ֑ל וְכׇל־צֹבֶ֙יהָ֙ וּמְצֹ֣דָתָ֔הּ וְהַמְּצִיקִ֖ים לָֽהּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ari᾽el, even all that fight against her and her stronghold, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.


###### Isaiah 29:8

וְהָיָ֡ה כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ יַחֲלֹ֨ם הָרָעֵ֜ב וְהִנֵּ֣ה אוֹכֵ֗ל וְהֵקִיץ֮ וְרֵיקָ֣ה נַפְשׁוֹ֒ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר יַחֲלֹ֤ם הַצָּמֵא֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה שֹׁתֶ֔ה וְהֵקִיץ֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה עָיֵ֔ף וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ שׁוֹקֵקָ֑ה כֵּ֣ן יִֽהְיֶ֗ה הֲמוֹן֙ כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִ֔ם הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים עַל־הַ֥ר צִיּֽוֹן׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
It shall even be as when a hungry man dreams, and, behold, he eats; but he awakes, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreams, and, behold, he drinks; but he awakes, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul longs for water: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Żiyyon.


###### Isaiah 29:9

הִתְמַהְמְה֣וּ וּתְמָ֔הוּ הִשְׁתַּעַשְׁע֖וּ וָשֹׁ֑עוּ שָׁכְר֣וּ וְלֹא־יַ֔יִן נָע֖וּ וְלֹ֥א שֵׁכָֽר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Amaze yourselves and be amazed; blind yourselves and be blind; be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not with strong drink.


###### Isaiah 29:10

כִּֽי־נָסַ֨ךְ עֲלֵיכֶ֤ם יְהֹוָה֙ ר֣וּחַ תַּרְדֵּמָ֔ה וַיְעַצֵּ֖ם אֶת־עֵינֵיכֶ֑ם אֶת־הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים וְאֶת־רָאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם הַחֹזִ֖ים כִּסָּֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For the Lord has poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, the prophets, and has covered your heads, the seers.


###### Isaiah 29:11

וַתְּהִ֨י לָכֶ֜ם חָז֣וּת הַכֹּ֗ל כְּדִבְרֵי֮ הַסֵּ֣פֶר הֶחָתוּם֒ אֲשֶֽׁר־יִתְּנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ אֶל־יוֹדֵ֥עַ (הספר) [סֵ֛פֶר] לֵאמֹ֖ר קְרָ֣א נָא־זֶ֑ה וְאָמַר֙ לֹ֣א אוּכַ֔ל כִּ֥י חָת֖וּם הֽוּא׃

And the vision of all this is become to you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he says, I cannot; for it is sealed:


###### Isaiah 29:12

וְנִתַּ֣ן הַסֵּ֗פֶר עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹא־יָדַ֥ע סֵ֛פֶר לֵאמֹ֖ר קְרָ֣א נָא־זֶ֑ה וְאָמַ֕ר לֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי סֵֽפֶר׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he says, I am not learned.


###### Isaiah 29:13

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲדֹנָ֗י יַ֚עַן כִּ֤י נִגַּשׁ֙ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה בְּפִ֤יו וּבִשְׂפָתָיו֙ כִּבְּד֔וּנִי וְלִבּ֖וֹ רִחַ֣ק מִמֶּ֑נִּי וַתְּהִ֤י יִרְאָתָם֙ אֹתִ֔י מִצְוַ֥ת אֲנָשִׁ֖ים מְלֻמָּדָֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the Lord said, Since this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear towards me is as a commandment of men learned by rote;


###### Isaiah 29:14

לָכֵ֗ן הִנְנִ֥י יוֹסִ֛ף לְהַפְלִ֥יא אֶת־הָעָם־הַזֶּ֖ה הַפְלֵ֣א וָפֶ֑לֶא וְאָֽבְדָה֙ חׇכְמַ֣ת חֲכָמָ֔יו וּבִינַ֥ת נְבֹנָ֖יו תִּסְתַּתָּֽר׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.


###### Isaiah 29:15

ה֛וֹי הַמַּעֲמִיקִ֥ים מֵיְהֹוָ֖ה לַסְתִּ֣ר עֵצָ֑ה וְהָיָ֤ה בְמַחְשָׁךְ֙ מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מִ֥י רֹאֵ֖נוּ וּמִ֥י יֹֽדְעֵֽנוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Woe to them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? and who knows us?


###### Isaiah 29:16

הַ֨פְכְּכֶ֔ם אִם־כְּחֹ֥מֶר הַיֹּצֵ֖ר יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב כִּֽי־יֹאמַ֨ר מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה לְעֹשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ לֹ֣א עָשָׂ֔נִי וְיֵ֛צֶר אָמַ֥ר לְיֹצְר֖וֹ לֹ֥א הֵבִֽין׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
O your perverseness! shall the potter be esteemed as the clay? for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?


###### Isaiah 29:17

הֲלוֹא־עוֹד֙ מְעַ֣ט מִזְעָ֔ר וְשָׁ֥ב לְבָנ֖וֹן לַכַּרְמֶ֑ל וְהַכַּרְמֶ֖ל לַיַּ֥עַר יֵחָשֵֽׁב׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Is it not yet a very little while, and Levanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?


###### Isaiah 29:18

וְשָׁמְע֧וּ בַיּוֹם־הַה֛וּא הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים דִּבְרֵי־סֵ֑פֶר וּמֵאֹ֣פֶל וּמֵחֹ֔שֶׁךְ עֵינֵ֥י עִוְרִ֖ים תִּרְאֶֽינָה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And on that day shall the deaf hear the words of a book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.


###### Isaiah 29:19

וְיָסְפ֧וּ עֲנָוִ֛ים בַּֽיהֹוָ֖ה שִׂמְחָ֑ה וְאֶבְיוֹנֵ֣י אָדָ֔ם בִּקְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יָגִֽילוּ׃

The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poorest among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Yisra᾽el.


###### Isaiah 29:20

כִּי־אָפֵ֥ס עָרִ֖יץ וְכָ֣לָה לֵ֑ץ וְנִכְרְת֖וּ כׇּל־שֹׁ֥קְדֵי אָֽוֶן׃

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:


###### Isaiah 29:21

מַחֲטִיאֵ֤י אָדָם֙ בְּדָבָ֔ר וְלַמּוֹכִ֥יחַ בַּשַּׁ֖עַר יְקֹשׁ֑וּן וַיַּטּ֥וּ בַתֹּ֖הוּ צַדִּֽיק׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
that make a man an offender for a word, and ensnare the mentor in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.


###### Isaiah 29:22

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר פָּדָ֖ה אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם לֹֽא־עַתָּ֤ה יֵבוֹשׁ֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב וְלֹ֥א עַתָּ֖ה פָּנָ֥יו יֶחֱוָֽרוּ׃

Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Avraham, concerning the house of Ya῾aqov, Ya῾aqov shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now grow pale;


###### Isaiah 29:23

כִּ֣י בִ֠רְאֹת֠וֹ יְלָדָ֞יו מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדַ֛י בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ יַקְדִּ֣ישֽׁוּ שְׁמִ֑י וְהִקְדִּ֙ישׁוּ֙ אֶת־קְד֣וֹשׁ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וְאֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, sanctifying my name; for they shall sanctify the Holy One of Ya῾aqov, and shall reverence the God of Yisra᾽el.


###### Isaiah 29:24

וְיָדְע֥וּ תֹֽעֵי־ר֖וּחַ בִּינָ֑ה וְרוֹגְנִ֖ים יִלְמְדוּ־לֶֽקַח׃{ס}

They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
