## Isaiah Chapter 9

###### Isaiah 9:1

הָעָם֙ הַהֹלְכִ֣ים בַּחֹ֔שֶׁךְ רָא֖וּ א֣וֹר גָּד֑וֹל יֹֽשְׁבֵי֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ צַלְמָ֔וֶת א֖וֹר נָגַ֥הּ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shone.


###### Isaiah 9:2

הִרְבִּ֣יתָ הַגּ֔וֹי (לא) [ל֖וֹ] הִגְדַּ֣לְתָּ הַשִּׂמְחָ֑ה שָׂמְח֤וּ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ כְּשִׂמְחַ֣ת בַּקָּצִ֔יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָגִ֖ילוּ בְּחַלְּקָ֥ם שָׁלָֽל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Thou hast multiplied the nation, and increased their joy: they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.


###### Isaiah 9:3

כִּ֣י**׀** אֶת־עֹ֣ל סֻבֳּל֗וֹ וְאֵת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה שִׁכְמ֔וֹ שֵׁ֖בֶט הַנֹּגֵ֣שׂ בּ֑וֹ הַחִתֹּ֖תָ כְּי֥וֹם מִדְיָֽן׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For Thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midyan.


###### Isaiah 9:4

כִּ֤י כׇל־סְאוֹן֙ סֹאֵ֣ן בְּרַ֔עַשׁ וְשִׂמְלָ֖ה מְגוֹלָלָ֣ה בְדָמִ֑ים וְהָיְתָ֥ה לִשְׂרֵפָ֖ה מַאֲכֹ֥לֶת אֵֽשׁ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For every shoe of the stormy warrior and every garment rolled in blood shall be burnt as fuel of fire.


###### Isaiah 9:5

כִּֽי־יֶ֣לֶד יֻלַּד־לָ֗נוּ בֵּ֚ן נִתַּן־לָ֔נוּ וַתְּהִ֥י הַמִּשְׂרָ֖ה עַל־שִׁכְמ֑וֹ וַיִּקְרָ֨א שְׁמ֜וֹ פֶּ֠לֶא יוֹעֵץ֙ אֵ֣ל גִּבּ֔וֹר אֲבִי־עַ֖ד שַׂר־שָׁלֽוֹם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given: and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name is called Pele-yo῾eż-el-gibbor-avi-῾ad-sar-shalom,


###### Isaiah 9:6

(לם רבה) [לְמַרְבֵּ֨ה] הַמִּשְׂרָ֜ה וּלְשָׁל֣וֹם אֵֽין־קֵ֗ץ עַל־כִּסֵּ֤א דָוִד֙ וְעַל־מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ לְהָכִ֤ין אֹתָהּ֙ וּֽלְסַעֲדָ֔הּ בְּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּבִצְדָקָ֑ה מֵֽעַתָּה֙ וְעַד־עוֹלָ֔ם קִנְאַ֛ת יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת תַּעֲשֶׂה־זֹּֽאת׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
for the increase of the realm and for peace without end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice: from henceforth for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts performs this.


###### Isaiah 9:7

דָּבָ֛ר שָׁלַ֥ח אֲדֹנָ֖י בְּיַעֲקֹ֑ב וְנָפַ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
The Lord sent a word against Ya῾aqov, and it will descend upon Yisra᾽el.


###### Isaiah 9:8

וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ הָעָ֣ם כֻּלּ֔וֹ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וְיוֹשֵׁ֣ב שֹׁמְר֑וֹן בְּגַאֲוָ֛ה וּבְגֹ֥דֶל לֵבָ֖ב לֵאמֹֽר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And all the people shall know, Efrayim and the inhabitant of Shomeron, that say in pride and arrogancy of heart,


###### Isaiah 9:9

לְבֵנִ֥ים נָפָ֖לוּ וְגָזִ֣ית נִבְנֶ֑ה שִׁקְמִ֣ים גֻּדָּ֔עוּ וַאֲרָזִ֖ים נַחֲלִֽיף׃

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them for cedars.


###### Isaiah 9:10

וַיְשַׂגֵּ֧ב יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־צָרֵ֥י רְצִ֖ין עָלָ֑יו וְאֶת־אֹיְבָ֖יו יְסַכְסֵֽךְ׃

Therefore the Lord sets up the adversaries of Reżin against him, and goads his enemies;

אֲרָ֣ם מִקֶּ֗דֶם וּפְלִשְׁתִּים֙ מֵאָח֔וֹר וַיֹּאכְל֥וּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּכׇל־פֶּ֑ה בְּכׇל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Aram before, and Pelishtim behind; and they devoured Yisra᾽el with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

וְהָעָ֥ם לֹא־שָׁ֖ב עַד־הַמַּכֵּ֑הוּ וְאֶת־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֹ֥א דָרָֽשׁוּ׃{ס}

For the people turned not unto him that smote them, neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.


###### Isaiah 9:13

וַיַּכְרֵ֨ת יְהֹוָ֜ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֗ל רֹ֧אשׁ וְזָנָ֛ב כִּפָּ֥ה וְאַגְמ֖וֹן י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃

Therefore the Lord cut off from Yisra᾽el, head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.


###### Isaiah 9:14

זָקֵ֥ן וּנְשֽׂוּא־פָנִ֖ים ה֣וּא הָרֹ֑אשׁ וְנָבִ֥יא מֽוֹרֶה־שֶּׁ֖קֶר ה֥וּא הַזָּנָֽב׃

The elder and the honourable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.


###### Isaiah 9:15

וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ מְאַשְּׁרֵ֥י הָֽעָם־הַזֶּ֖ה מַתְעִ֑ים וּמְאֻשָּׁרָ֖יו מְבֻלָּעִֽים׃

For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led by them are destroyed.


###### Isaiah 9:16

עַל־כֵּ֨ן עַל־בַּחוּרָ֜יו לֹא־יִשְׂמַ֣ח**׀** אֲדֹנָ֗י וְאֶת־יְתֹמָ֤יו וְאֶת־אַלְמְנוֹתָיו֙ לֹ֣א יְרַחֵ֔ם כִּ֤י כֻלּוֹ֙ חָנֵ֣ף וּמֵרַ֔ע וְכׇל־פֶּ֖ה דֹּבֵ֣ר נְבָלָ֑ה בְּכׇל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for everyone is a flatterer and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.


###### Isaiah 9:17

כִּֽי־בָעֲרָ֤ה כָאֵשׁ֙ רִשְׁעָ֔ה שָׁמִ֥יר וָשַׁ֖יִת תֹּאכֵ֑ל וַתִּצַּת֙ בְּסִֽבְכֵ֣י הַיַּ֔עַר וַיִּֽתְאַבְּכ֖וּ גֵּא֥וּת עָשָֽׁן׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For wickedness burns like the fire: it devours the briers and thorns, and kindles in the thickets of the forest, and they mount up in a billow of smoke.


###### Isaiah 9:18

בְּעֶבְרַ֛ת יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת נֶעְתַּ֣ם אָ֑רֶץ וַיְהִ֤י הָעָם֙ כְּמַאֲכֹ֣לֶת אֵ֔שׁ אִ֥ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֖יו לֹ֥א יַחְמֹֽלוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people are as the fuel of the fire: no man spares his brother.


###### Isaiah 9:19

וַיִּגְזֹ֤ר עַל־יָמִין֙ וְרָעֵ֔ב וַיֹּ֥אכַל עַל־שְׂמֹ֖אול וְלֹ֣א שָׂבֵ֑עוּ אִ֥ישׁ בְּשַׂר־זְרֹע֖וֹ יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And he snatches on the right hand, and is hungry; and he eats on the left hand, and they are not satisfied: they eat every man the flesh of his own arm:


###### Isaiah 9:20

מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה אֶת־אֶפְרַ֗יִם וְאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶת־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה יַחְדָּ֥ו הֵ֖מָּה עַל־יְהוּדָ֑ה בְּכׇל־זֹאת֙ לֹא־שָׁ֣ב אַפּ֔וֹ וְע֖וֹד יָד֥וֹ נְטוּיָֽה׃{ס}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Menashshe against Efrayim; and Efrayim against Menashshe: and they together are against Yehuda. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
