## Job Chapter 18

###### Job 18:1

###### Job 18:2

עַד־אָ֤נָה**׀** תְּשִׂימ֣וּן קִנְצֵ֣י לְמִלִּ֑ין תָּ֝בִ֗ינוּ וְאַחַ֥ר נְדַבֵּֽר׃

How long will you make a perversion of words? consider, and afterwards we will speak.

How long will you [(the friends)] put an end to words? [i.e., How long will you interrupt the words of Iyyov?]


###### Job 18:3

מַ֭דּוּעַ נֶחְשַׁ֣בְנוּ כַבְּהֵמָ֑ה נִ֝טְמִ֗ינוּ בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

Why are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight?

Why should we be looked upon as beasts? We are obtuse in your eyes.


###### Job 18:4

טֹרֵ֥ף נַפְשׁ֗וֹ בְּאַ֫פּ֥וֹ הַֽ֭לְמַעַנְךָ תֵּעָ֣זַב אָ֑רֶץ וְיֶעְתַּק־צ֝֗וּר מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
He tears himself in his anger. Shall the earth be forsaken for thee? or shall the rock be removed out of his place?

[You Iyyov,] who tears his spirit in his anger, shall the [ordinance of the] earth be abandoned for your sake, and the Rock be removed from His place [i.e., from His ordinance]?


###### Job 18:5

גַּ֤ם א֣וֹר רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִדְעָ֑ךְ וְלֹא־יִ֝גַּ֗הּ שְׁבִ֣יב אִשּֽׁוֹ׃

Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

Verily, the light of the wicked will dart away, and the spark of his fire will not light.


###### Job 18:6

א֭וֹר חָשַׁ֣ךְ בְּאׇהֳל֑וֹ וְ֝נֵר֗וֹ עָלָ֥יו יִדְעָֽךְ׃

The light shall be dark in his tent, and his candle over him shall be put out.

The light of his tent will grow dark, and the light of his lamp will dart away.


###### Job 18:7

יֵ֭צְרוּ צַעֲדֵ֣י אוֹנ֑וֹ וְֽתַשְׁלִיכֵ֥הוּ עֲצָתֽוֹ׃

The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

The steps of his might will be constricted, and his counsel will cast him away.


###### Job 18:8

כִּֽי־שֻׁלַּ֣ח בְּרֶ֣שֶׁת בְּרַגְלָ֑יו וְעַל־שְׂ֝בָכָ֗ה יִתְהַלָּֽךְ׃

For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks on a pitfall.

For he will be sent into the net with his [own] feet, and he will walk upon the lattice-work [i.e., the net].


###### Job 18:9

יֹאחֵ֣ז בְּעָקֵ֣ב פָּ֑ח יַחֲזֵ֖ק עָלָ֣יו צַמִּֽים׃

The trap shall take him by the heel, and the snare shall prevail against him.

The trap will hold him by the heel, and thirst will grow upon him.


###### Job 18:10

טָמ֣וּן בָּאָ֣רֶץ חַבְל֑וֹ וּ֝מַלְכֻּדְתּ֗וֹ עֲלֵ֣י נָתִֽיב׃

The noose is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

His rope [i.e., the rope which will snare him] is hidden in the ground; his trap lies upon the path.


###### Job 18:11

סָ֭בִיב בִּעֲתֻ֣הוּ בַלָּה֑וֹת וֶהֱפִיצֻ֥הוּ לְרַגְלָֽיו׃

Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall chase him at his heels:

Around him, demons affright him, and they beat him [down] to his feet.


###### Job 18:12

יְהִי־רָעֵ֥ב אֹנ֑וֹ וְ֝אֵ֗יד נָכ֥וֹן לְצַלְעֽוֹ׃

his first born shall he plagued with hunger, and his wife beset with calamity.

His son will hunger and calamity awaits his wife.


###### Job 18:13

יֹ֭אכַל בַּדֵּ֣י עוֹר֑וֹ יֹאכַ֥ל בַּ֝דָּ֗יו בְּכ֣וֹר מָֽוֶת׃

He will devour the limbs of his skin: the firstborn doomed to die will devour his own limbs.

He will consume the branches of his skin [(his other sons and daughters)]. The prince of death will consume his branches.


###### Job 18:14

יִנָּתֵ֣ק מֵ֭אׇהֳלוֹ מִבְטַח֑וֹ וְ֝תַצְעִדֵ֗הוּ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ בַּלָּהֽוֹת׃

He shall be cut off from the tent of his security; and shall he brought to the king of terrors.

He will be cut off from his tent [i.e., his wife], who trusts to him, and she will dispatch him to the king of the demons.


###### Job 18:15

תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן בְּ֭אׇהֳלוֹ מִבְּלִיל֑וֹ יְזֹרֶ֖ה עַל־נָוֵ֣הוּ גׇפְרִֽית׃

In his tent dwells that which is none of his: brimstone is scattered on his habitation.

She will live in his tent [(a widow)] without him, [and, in the end,] his habitation will be overspread with brimstone.


###### Job 18:16

מִ֭תַּחַת שׇׁרָשָׁ֣יו יִבָ֑שׁוּ וּ֝מִמַּ֗עַל יִמַּ֥ל קְצִירֽוֹ׃

His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch wither.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Beneath, his roots [i.e., what took root] will dry up, and above, his boughs will be cut away [(without his deriving any benefit from them)].


###### Job 18:17

זִֽכְרוֹ־אָ֭בַד מִנִּי־אָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־שֵׁ֥ם ל֝֗וֹ עַל־פְּנֵי־חֽוּץ׃

His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

His remembrance will vanish from the land; he will have no name in the thoroughfares.


###### Job 18:18

יֶ֭הְדְּפֻהוּ מֵא֣וֹר אֶל־חֹ֑שֶׁךְ וּֽמִתֵּבֵ֥ל יְנִדֻּֽהוּ׃

He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

[(From heaven)] they will thrust him from light into darkness, and they will remove him from the world.


###### Job 18:19

לֹ֘א־נִ֤ין ל֣וֹ וְלֹא־נֶ֣כֶד בְּעַמּ֑וֹ וְאֵ֥ין שָׂ֝רִ֗יד בִּמְגוּרָֽיו׃

He shall have neither son nor offspring among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

There will remain to him neither a son nor a grandson among his people, and no trace [of him will remain] in his dwelling places.


###### Job 18:20

עַל־י֭וֹמוֹ נָשַׁ֣מּוּ אַחֲרֹנִ֑ים וְ֝קַדְמֹנִ֗ים אָ֣חֲזוּ שָֽׂעַר׃

They who come after him shall be astonished at his day, as they who went before were affrighted.

The later ones will be astounded at his day [(of destruction)], and the early ones [(who knew him previously)] will be seized [as with] a tempest.


###### Job 18:21

אַךְ־אֵ֭לֶּה מִשְׁכְּנ֣וֹת עַוָּ֑ל וְ֝זֶ֗ה מְק֣וֹם לֹֽא־יָדַֽע־אֵֽל׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him who knows not God.

This alone [is the lot of] the abodes of iniquity, and this [is the lot of] the place that G d did not know [i.e., that He rejected].
