## Job Chapter 42

###### Job 42:1

(ידעת) [יָ֭דַעְתִּי] כִּי־כֹ֣ל תּוּכָ֑ל וְלֹֽא־יִבָּצֵ֖ר מִמְּךָ֣ מְזִמָּֽה׃

I know that Thou canst do everything, and that no purpose of Thine can be thwarted.

I have [always] known that You are omnipotent, and that no thought is withheld from You.


###### Job 42:3

מִ֤י זֶ֨ה**׀** מַעְלִ֥ים עֵצָ֗ה בְּֽלִ֫י־דָ֥עַת לָכֵ֣ן הִ֭גַּדְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אָבִ֑ין נִפְלָא֥וֹת מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי וְלֹ֣א אֵדָֽע׃

Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore I have uttered that which I did not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

Who would deny counsel [(and the working of wonders to the L rd)]? Therefore, I have related [(what was known to me)]. But I did not understand [certain things] which are removed from me, which I do not know.


###### Job 42:4

שְֽׁמַֽע־נָ֭א וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃

Hear, I beseech Thee, and I will speak: I will demand of Thee, and declare Thou unto me.

Listen, now, and I will speak. I will ask You, and You will give me knowledge.


###### Job 42:5

לְשֵֽׁמַע־אֹ֥זֶן שְׁמַעְתִּ֑יךָ וְ֝עַתָּ֗ה עֵינִ֥י רָאָֽתְךָ׃

I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees Thee.

[Before,] I heard of You with my ears, but now my eyes have seen You [(i.e., the Shechinah)].


###### Job 42:6

עַל־כֵּ֭ן אֶמְאַ֣ס וְנִחַ֑מְתִּי עַל־עָפָ֥ר וָאֵֽפֶר׃{פ}

Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

Therefore, I despise [my life]. And I would be consoled [if I could return] to dust and ashes.


###### Job 42:7

וַיְהִ֗י אַחַ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶל־אִיּ֑וֹב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־אֱלִיפַ֣ז הַתֵּימָנִ֗י חָרָ֨ה אַפִּ֤י בְךָ֙ וּבִשְׁנֵ֣י רֵעֶ֔יךָ כִּ֠י לֹ֣א דִבַּרְתֶּ֥ם אֵלַ֛י נְכוֹנָ֖ה כְּעַבְדִּ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃{ס}

And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words to Iyyov, the Lord said to Elifaz the Temanite; My anger burns against thee, and against thy two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, like my servant Iyyov.

And it was, after G d had spoken these words to Iyyov, that the L rd said to Elifaz the Temanite: I am angry with you and with your two friends [Bildad the Shuchite and Tzofar the Na'amathite], for you did not speak rightly to Me [(i.e., you did not present a cogent claim)] as (did) my servant Iyyov. [Iyyov did not speak offensively to Him, but only plaintively (viz. Chapter 9) and in the throes of affliction, but they offended in branding Iyyov as wicked and not consoling him (as Elihu did), and taunting him even beyond his suffering.]


###### Job 42:8

וְעַתָּ֡ה קְחוּ־לָכֶ֣ם שִׁבְעָֽה־פָרִים֩ וְשִׁבְעָ֨ה אֵילִ֜ים וּלְכ֣וּ**׀** אֶל־עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּ֗וֹב וְהַעֲלִיתֶ֤ם עוֹלָה֙ בַּעַדְכֶ֔ם וְאִיּ֣וֹב עַבְדִּ֔י יִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֧י אִם־פָּנָ֣יו אֶשָּׂ֗א לְבִלְתִּ֞י עֲשׂ֤וֹת עִמָּכֶם֙ נְבָלָ֔ה כִּ֠י לֹ֣א דִבַּרְתֶּ֥ם אֵלַ֛י נְכוֹנָ֖ה כְּעַבְדִּ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃

Therefore take for yourselves now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Iyyov, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Iyyov shall pray for you: for to him I will show favour in doing you no disgrace, although you have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Iyyov.

And now, take for yourselves seven bullocks and seven rams and go to My servant Iyyov and bring up a burnt-offering for yourselves, and Iyyov My servant will pray for you; for I will show favor to him not to do anything vile to you. For you did not speak rightly to Me as (did) My servant Iyyov.


###### Job 42:9

וַיֵּלְכוּ֩ אֱלִיפַ֨ז הַתֵּימָנִ֜י וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֗י צֹפַר֙ הַנַּ֣עֲמָתִ֔י וַיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיִּשָּׂ֥א יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃

So Elifaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuĥite and Żofar the Na῾amatite went, and did as the Lord commanded them: the Lord also accepted Iyyov.

And Elifaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuchite and Tzofar the Na'amathite went, and did as the L rd had spoken to them, and the L rd showed favor to Iyyov [(and accepted his prayer for them)].


###### Job 42:10

וַיהֹוָ֗ה שָׁ֚ב אֶת־[שְׁב֣וּת] (שבית) אִיּ֔וֹב בְּהִֽתְפַּֽלְל֖וֹ בְּעַ֣ד רֵעֵ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֧סֶף יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְאִיּ֖וֹב לְמִשְׁנֶֽה׃

And the Lord restored the fortunes of Iyyov, when he prayed for his friends: and the Lord gave Iyyov twice as much as he had before.

And the L rd returned what had been taken from Iyyov, because of his praying for his friend, and the L rd increased all that Iyyov owned to double [its former amount].

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אֵ֠לָ֠יו כׇּל־אֶחָ֨יו וְכׇל־אַחְיֹתָ֜יו וְכׇל־יֹדְעָ֣יו לְפָנִ֗ים וַיֹּאכְל֨וּ עִמּ֣וֹ לֶ֘חֶם֮ בְּבֵיתוֹ֒ וַיָּנֻ֤דוּ לוֹ֙ וַיְנַחֲמ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ עַ֚ל כׇּל־הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵבִ֥יא יְהֹוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו וַיִּתְּנוּ־ל֗וֹ אִ֚ישׁ קְשִׂיטָ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת וְאִ֕ישׁ נֶ֥זֶם זָהָ֖ב אֶחָֽד׃

Then all his brothers came to him, and all his sisters, and all they who had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a qesita, and everyone an earring of gold.

And there came to him all of his brothers and all of his sisters and all of his former acquaintances [(all who had been his good friends before the afflictions)], and they ate bread with him in his house, and they nodded to him [in sympathy] and consoled him for all of the suffering that the L rd had brought upon him, and each of them gave him one kesita [(a coin)], and each, a golden nose-ring.


###### Job 42:12

וַיהֹוָ֗ה בֵּרַ֛ךְ אֶת־אַחֲרִ֥ית אִיּ֖וֹב מֵרֵֽאשִׁת֑וֹ וַֽיְהִי־ל֡וֹ אַרְבָּעָה֩ עָשָׂ֨ר אֶ֜לֶף צֹ֗אן וְשֵׁ֤שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֙ גְּמַלִּ֔ים וְאֶלֶף־צֶ֥מֶד בָּקָ֖ר וְאֶ֥לֶף אֲתוֹנֽוֹת׃

So the Lord blessed the latter end of Iyyov more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

And the L rd blessed Iyyov's latter days more than [He had blessed] his beginning. And he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand pairs of cattle, and a thousand she-asses.


###### Job 42:13

וַֽיְהִי־ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥נָה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ בָּנֽוֹת׃

He had also seven sons and three daughters.

###### Job 42:14

וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵׁם־הָאַחַת֙ יְמִימָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית קְצִיעָ֑ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית קֶ֥רֶן הַפּֽוּךְ׃

And he called the name of the first, Yemima; and the name of the second, Qeżi῾a; and the name of the third, Qeren-happukh.

He called the first Yemimah [(sun)]; the second, Ketziah [(spice)]; and the third, Keren Hapuch [("the puch [cosmetic] horn")].


###### Job 42:15

וְלֹ֨א נִמְצָ֜א נָשִׁ֥ים יָפ֛וֹת כִּבְנ֥וֹת אִיּ֖וֹב בְּכׇל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֧ם אֲבִיהֶ֛ם נַחֲלָ֖ה בְּת֥וֹךְ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Iyyov: and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers.

And there were no women as beautiful as the daughters of Iyyov in the whole land, and their father [(because of their distinctiveness and beauty)] gave them an inheritance together with their brothers.


###### Job 42:16

וַיְחִ֤י אִיּוֹב֙ אַחֲרֵי־זֹ֔את מֵאָ֥ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה (וירא) [וַיִּרְאֶ֗ה] אֶת־בָּנָיו֙ וְאֶת־בְּנֵ֣י בָנָ֔יו אַרְבָּעָ֖ה דֹּרֽוֹת׃

After this Iyyov lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

###### Job 42:17

וַיָּ֣מׇת אִיּ֔וֹב זָקֵ֖ן וּשְׂבַ֥ע יָמִֽים׃

So Iyyov died, being old and full of days.
