###### Joshua 8:1

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ אַל־תִּירָ֣א וְאַל־תֵּחָ֔ת קַ֣ח עִמְּךָ֗ אֵ֚ת כׇּל־עַ֣ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְק֖וּם עֲלֵ֣ה הָעָ֑י רְאֵ֣ה**׀** נָתַ֣תִּי בְיָדְךָ֗ אֶת־מֶ֤לֶךְ הָעַי֙ וְאֶת־עַמּ֔וֹ וְאֶת־עִיר֖וֹ וְאֶת־אַרְצֽוֹ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the Lord said to Yehoshua, Fear not, nor be dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to ῾Ay: see I have given into thy hand the king of ῾Ay: and his people, and his city, and his land:


###### Joshua 8:2

וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ לָעַ֜י וּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤יתָ לִּֽירִיחוֹ֙ וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ רַק־שְׁלָלָ֥הּ וּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּ תָּבֹ֣זּוּ לָכֶ֑ם שִׂים־לְךָ֥ אֹרֵ֛ב לָעִ֖יר מֵאַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and thou shalt do to ῾Ay and her king as thou didst to Yeriĥo and her king: only its spoil and its cattle, shall you take for a prey to yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

וַיָּ֧קׇם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ וְכׇל־עַ֥ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה לַעֲל֣וֹת הָעָ֑י וַיִּבְחַ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁ֠עַ שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים אֶ֤לֶף אִישׁ֙ גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֔יִל וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֖ם לָֽיְלָה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
So Yehoshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against ῾Ay: and Yehoshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

וַיְצַ֨ו אֹתָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר רְ֠א֠וּ אַתֶּ֞ם אֹרְבִ֤ים לָעִיר֙ מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י הָעִ֔יר אַל־תַּרְחִ֥יקוּ מִן־הָעִ֖יר מְאֹ֑ד וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם נְכֹנִֽים׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And he commanded them, saying, Behold, you shall lie in wait against the city, behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be all of you ready:


###### Joshua 8:5

וַאֲנִ֗י וְכׇל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֔י נִקְרַ֖ב אֶל־הָעִ֑יר וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יֵצְא֤וּ לִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
and I and all the people that are with me, will approach the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,


###### Joshua 8:6

וְיָצְא֣וּ אַחֲרֵ֗ינוּ עַ֣ד הַתִּיקֵ֤נוּ אוֹתָם֙ מִן־הָעִ֔יר כִּ֣י יֹֽאמְר֔וּ נָסִ֣ים לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
(for they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.


###### Joshua 8:7

וְאַתֶּ֗ם תָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ מֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔ב וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הָעִ֑יר וּנְתָנָ֛הּ יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Then you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.

וְהָיָ֞ה כְּתׇפְשְׂכֶ֣ם אֶת־הָעִ֗יר תַּצִּ֤יתוּ אֶת־הָעִיר֙ בָּאֵ֔שׁ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ רְא֖וּ צִוִּ֥יתִי אֶתְכֶֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And it shall be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall you do. See, I have commanded you.


###### Joshua 8:9

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֶל־הַמַּאְרָ֔ב וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֣ם לָעָ֑י וַיָּ֧לֶן יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַה֖וּא בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Yehoshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bet-el and ῾Ay, on the west side of ῾Ay: but Yehoshua lodged that night among the people.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד אֶת־הָעָ֑ם וַיַּ֨עַל ה֜וּא וְזִקְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם הָעָֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Yehoshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Yisra᾽el, before the people to ῾Ay.

וְכׇל־הָעָ֨ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֗וֹ עָלוּ֙ וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ נֶ֣גֶד הָעִ֑יר וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעַ֔י וְהַגַּ֖י בֵּינָ֥ו וּבֵין־הָעָֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And all the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of ῾Ay: now there was a valley between them and ῾Ay.

וַיִּקַּ֕ח כַּחֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיָּ֨שֶׂם אוֹתָ֜ם אֹרֵ֗ב בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֥ם לָעִֽיר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bet-el and ῾Ay on the west side of the city.

וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ הָעָ֜ם אֶת־כׇּל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־עֲקֵב֖וֹ מִיָּ֣ם לָעִ֑יר וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַה֖וּא בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעֵֽמֶק׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And when they had set the people, even all the encampment that was on the north of the city, and their ambush party on the west of the city, Yehoshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

וַיְהִ֞י כִּרְא֣וֹת מֶלֶךְ־הָעַ֗י וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ וַיֵּצְא֣וּ אַנְשֵֽׁי־הָעִ֣יר לִקְרַֽאת־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵ֠ל לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה ה֧וּא וְכׇל־עַמּ֛וֹ לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הָעֲרָבָ֑ה וְהוּא֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּֽי־אֹרֵ֥ב ל֖וֹ מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י הָעִֽיר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And it came to pass, when the king of ῾Ay saw it, that they hastened and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Yisra᾽el to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he knew not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

וַיִּנָּ֥גְע֛וּ יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ וְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Yehoshua and all Yisra᾽el made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

וַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּ כׇּל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר (בעיר) [בָּעַ֔י] לִרְדֹּ֖ף אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַיִּנָּתְק֖וּ מִן־הָעִֽיר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And all the people that were in ῾Ay were called out to pursue after them: and they pursued after Yehoshua, and were drawn away from the city.

וְלֹא־נִשְׁאַ֣ר אִ֗ישׁ בָּעַי֙ וּבֵ֣ית אֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יָצְא֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ אֶת־הָעִיר֙ פְּתוּחָ֔ה וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And there was not a man left in ῾Ay or Bet-el, that went not out after Yisra᾽el: and they left the city unguarded, and pursued after Yisra᾽el.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ נְ֠טֵ֠ה בַּכִּיד֤וֹן אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ אֶל־הָעַ֔י כִּ֥י בְיָדְךָ֖ אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה וַיֵּ֧ט יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּכִּיד֥וֹן אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָד֖וֹ אֶל־הָעִֽיר׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the Lord said to Yehoshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward ῾Ay; for I will give it into thy hand. And Yehoshua stretched out the javelin that he had in his hand toward the city.

וְהָאוֹרֵ֡ב קָם֩ מְהֵרָ֨ה מִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹ וַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙ כִּנְט֣וֹת יָד֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ הָעִ֖יר וַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָ וַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּ וַיַּצִּ֥יתוּ אֶת־הָעִ֖יר בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the ambush rose quickly out of their place, and they ran when he stretched out his hand: and they entered the city, and took it, and hastily set the city on fire.

וַיִּפְנ֣וּ אַנְשֵׁי֩ הָעַ֨י אַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם וַיִּרְא֗וּ וְהִנֵּ֨ה עָלָ֜ה עֲשַׁ֤ן הָעִיר֙ הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה וְלֹא־הָיָ֨ה בָהֶ֥ם יָדַ֛יִם לָנ֖וּס הֵ֣נָּה וָהֵ֑נָּה וְהָעָם֙ הַנָּ֣ס הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר נֶהְפַּ֖ךְ אֶל־הָֽרוֹדֵֽף׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And when the men of ῾Ay looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to the sky, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ וְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל רָא֗וּ כִּֽי־לָכַ֤ד הָאֹרֵב֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וְכִ֥י עָלָ֖ה עֲשַׁ֣ן הָעִ֑יר וַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּ וַיַּכּ֖וּ אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָעָֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And when Yehoshua and all Yisra᾽el saw that the ambush party had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned and slew the men of ῾Ay.

וְאֵ֨לֶּה יָצְא֤וּ מִן־הָעִיר֙ לִקְרָאתָ֔ם וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ אֵ֥לֶּה מִזֶּ֖ה וְאֵ֣לֶּה מִזֶּ֑ה וַיַּכּ֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם עַד־בִּלְתִּ֥י הִשְׁאִֽיר־ל֖וֹ שָׂרִ֥יד וּפָלִֽיט׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the others issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Yisra᾽el, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

וְאֶת־מֶ֥לֶךְ הָעַ֖י תָּ֣פְשׂוּ חָ֑י וַיַּקְרִ֥בוּ אֹת֖וֹ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃

And the king of ῾Ay they took alive, and brought him to Yehoshua.


###### Joshua 8:24

וַיְהִ֣י כְּכַלּ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל לַהֲרֹג֩ אֶת־כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֨י הָעַ֜י בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר רְדָפ֣וּם בּ֔וֹ וַֽיִּפְּל֥וּ כֻלָּ֛ם לְפִי־חֶ֖רֶב עַד־תֻּמָּ֑ם וַיָּשֻׁ֤בוּ כׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָעַ֔י וַיַּכּ֥וּ אֹתָ֖הּ לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And it came to pass, when Yisra᾽el had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of ῾Ay in the field, in the wilderness into which they had pursued them, and when they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that then all Yisra᾽el returned to ῾Ay, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

וַיְהִי֩ כׇל־הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ מֵאִ֣ישׁ וְעַד־אִשָּׁ֔ה שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר אָ֑לֶף כֹּ֖ל אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָעָֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And so it was, that all that fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand, all the men of ῾Ay.

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ לֹא־הֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָטָ֖ה בַּכִּיד֑וֹן עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶחֱרִ֔ים אֵ֖ת כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָעָֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
For Yehoshua did not withdraw his hand, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of ῾Ay.

רַ֣ק הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה וּשְׁלַל֙ הָעִ֣יר הַהִ֔יא בָּֽזְז֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖ה אֶת־יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Yisra᾽el took for plunder to themselves, according to the word of the Lord which he commanded Yehoshua.

וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ אֶת־הָעָ֑י וַיְשִׂימֶ֤הָ תֵּל־עוֹלָם֙ שְׁמָמָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Yehoshua burnt ῾Ay, and made it a perpetual mound, a desolation to this day.

וְאֶת־מֶ֧לֶךְ הָעַ֛י תָּלָ֥ה עַל־הָעֵ֖ץ עַד־עֵ֣ת הָעָ֑רֶב וּכְב֣וֹא הַשֶּׁ֩מֶשׁ֩ צִוָּ֨ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ וַיֹּרִ֧ידוּ אֶת־נִבְלָת֣וֹ מִן־הָעֵ֗ץ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤יכוּ אוֹתָהּ֙ אֶל־פֶּ֙תַח֙ שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֔יר וַיָּקִ֤ימוּ עָלָיו֙ גַּל־אֲבָנִ֣ים גָּד֔וֹל עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the king of ῾Ay he hanged on a tree until evening: and as soon as the sun was down, Yehoshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones, to this day.

אָ֣ז יִבְנֶ֤ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לַֽיהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְּהַ֖ר עֵיבָֽל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Then Yehoshua built an altar to the Lord God of Yisra᾽el in mount ῾Eval,

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּה֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה עֶֽבֶד־יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כַּכָּתוּב֙ בְּסֵ֙פֶר֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִזְבַּח֙ אֲבָנִ֣ים שְׁלֵמ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־הֵנִ֥יף עֲלֵיהֶ֖ן בַּרְזֶ֑ל וַיַּעֲל֨וּ עָלָ֤יו עֹלוֹת֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה וַֽיִּזְבְּח֖וּ שְׁלָמִֽים׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
as Moshe the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Yisra᾽el as it is written in the book of the Tora of Moshe, an altar of whole stones, over which no man lifted up any iron instrument: and they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

וַיִּכְתׇּב־שָׁ֖ם עַל־הָאֲבָנִ֑ים אֵ֗ת מִשְׁנֵה֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּתַ֔ב לִפְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the Tora of Moshe, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Yisra᾽el.

And all Yisra᾽el, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, both stranger, and native born; half of them over against mount Gerizzim, and half of them over against mount ῾Eval; as Moshe the servant of the Lord had commanded that they should first bless the people of Yisra᾽el.

There was not a word of all that Moshe commanded, which Yehoshua read not before all the congregation of Yisra᾽el with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that went amongst them.
