**עבדים היינו לפרעה במצרים.** היא תשובת למה נשתנה בשאלת האחרונה שהלילה הזה כלנו מסובין שבכלל תשובה זו כל שאר הדברים שלפיכ' נשתנה הלילה הזה באכילת מצה ומרור מכל שאר הלילות. ואם תאמ' מאי דהוה הוה ומה לנו לספר במה שעבר לכך אנו אומר' שאלו לא הוציא הקדוש ברוך הוא את אבותינו ממצרים הרי אנחנו ובנינו ובני בנינו עדין היינו משועבדים.

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan:**
**We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt:** This is an answer to last of the questions about leaning; but it serves an answer for the other questions as well. This night is different from other nights; we eat matzah and maror. If one were to respond, "Whatever happened, happened; why do we have to bother telling what happened," we would say to him, "If the Holy One had not taken our ancestors out of Egypt, we and our children and our children's children would still be subjugated in Egypt."

**ואפי' כלנו חכמים וכו'.** כדאמרי' ואפילו שני ת"ח הבקיאים בהלכות הפסח שואלים זה את זה כדי לקיים מצות ההגדה. כמו שמספר והולך.

**Even if we were all wise:** As was quoted earlier, "Even two who are knowledgeable in the laws of Passover should ask one another," in order to fulfil the obligations of telling the story of the Exodus, as the Haggadah goes on to illustrate.
