והנה לפי הנראה יש בזה ה׳ מדריגות זו למעלה מזו, וכל אחד על מקומו יבוא ולא יטעה הטועה כו׳.

Now, apparently there are five levels here, one above the other, each one of which will be explained in its place, so that no one should err etc.

הא׳ הגרוע שבכולם והוא שכל עיקר חפצו אינו רק להיות מתפעל בלבד ויהיה לו מזה חיות,

The first level is the worst one of all. This is when a person’s principal desire in Divine contemplation, is wholly just to become excited, in order to feel alive.

שזהו בערך המדרגה הפחותה שבכולם עד שקרוב לערך ענין התפעלות לב בשר החיצוני הנזכר לעיל בהרגשת עצמו לבד,

In comparison to the other levels, this is the least of them, so much so, that it can almost be compared to the above-mentioned external excitement of the heart of flesh brought about solely through intentional self-arousal of feeling, [totally divorced from Godliness].

כי אינו רוצה ומכוין לבחינת אלקות כלל ואין כוונתו ומגמתו שיהיה אלהות שוכן בנפשו, או שתהיה נפשו קשורה באלהות כו׳, רק שיהיה לו חיות דבר מה להיות בבחינת יש וכו׳.

This is not Divine excitement at all, because he does not desire or intend any aspect of Godliness whatsoever. His intention and goal is not that Godliness dwell in his soul or that his soul be bound to Godliness etc., but rather to have something of a thrill, so that he can be aware of his self-existence.

אך אף על פי כן איזה תערובות טוב יש בזה בהעלם והוא מבחינת אהבה המסותרת דהיינו שנעלמת בלבוש זר שלו שהוא רוצה,

Nonetheless, there is some hidden admixture of good here, which comes from the aspect of the concealed love of *HaShem*-יהו"ה within his heart. That is, it is hidden within the alien garment of his revealed desire.

רק עם כל זה בהעלם עיקר רצונו שיהיה לו התפעלות לה׳ דוקא ובלתי לה׳ לא היה רוצה כלל בכל זה,

Nevertheless, all this notwithstanding, in a hidden way, his essential desire is specifically to become excited about *HaShem*-יהו"ה and if it would not be about *HaShem*-יהו"ה, he would have no desire to pursue it altogether.

הגם שבגילוי אין הענין כן, כי לא יעלה על לבו תוכן הענין שהוא להיות בחינת גילוי אלהות בנפשו ולא מצד הנאות עצמו רק מצד חפצו באלהות,

This is so, even though, in a revealed way, this is not the case. Rather, the inner content of the matter (that there should be a revelation of Godliness in his soul because he really only desires Godliness, rather than just pleasuring himself), never consciously enters his mind.

שעל זה אמר קרבת אלהים לי טוב וכידוע.

About this true, underlying desire, the verse states,¹ “And as for me, closeness to God is good for me,” as known.
