מנהג זה שבנות ישראל כשמגיעות לי"ב שנה ויום אחד לעשות אותו ליום שמחה על שנכנסות לעול המצוות שהנשים מחוייבות בהן, נזכר בכמה פוסקים, ולא הוקבעה לו תכנית מפורטת.

ברם, ראוי לקיים את יום בת־המצוה לפי סדר זה:

ביום מלאת 12 שנה ויום אחד לבת, תיערך לעת ערב מסיבה לכבודה ושבה יודיעו לה על שנכנסה לעול המצוות המחייבות את האשה, כגון שמירת שבת, כשרות, וכדו'. כמו־כן יקראו לה את הפסוק: "ויברכו את רבקה ויאמרו לה אחותנו את היי לאלפי רבבה ויירש זרעך את שער שונאיו" (בראשית כ״ד:ס׳ פסוק 60) וכן את "אשת חיל", במשלי פרק ל"א מפסוק 10 ועד הסוף. לאחר מכן יכולים לשיר שירי מסורת ולהשמיע מנגינות מוסיקה וכו', והכל ברוח המסורת.

ביום השבת הסמוך, יברך הרב או חזן בית־הכנסת את בת־המצוה לאחר קריאת התורה, והקהל ישירו לכבודה. כמובן שאין להעלותה לתורה.
