פונה אל כבודו ילדה אשר בעוד שלשה שבועות תקבל עליה עול מצוות, והתעוררה לפני בעיה אשר כבודו ידע לפתור אותה.

הבעיה היא חגיגת "בת־מצווה". נהוג היה בישראל בכל הדורות לחגוג לילד "בר־מצווה" –וחשיבות מיוחדת יחסו "לבר־מצווה" זה. בעוד שלילדה לא ציינו מאורע זה כלל, ואף כיום אני נתקלת בהתנגדות קלה מצד סבי לעריכת חגיגה זו אשר אני עומדת לחגוג.

ותמהה אני מאוד, ידוע הרי שאת דמות הבית והמשפחה מעצבת האשה, פי כמה מהבעל, והרי גם ברור שחינוך הילדים – הדור הבא – מוטל בעיקר על האשה. אם כן למה לא ציינו ולא חגגו את יום היכנסה של האשה – שהיא אם האומה – לעול מצוות? והעדיפו על פניה את הבן. והרי גם רבותינו למדונו "שמע בני מוסר אביך ואל תיטוש תורת אמך", ואם היתה הצדקה לכך לפני שנים רבות שאז היתה "כבוד בת המלך פנימה", האשה ישבה בביתה. כיום האשה מעורה בכל שטחי־החיים, כמעט ואין מקצוע שבו לא שולטת האשה, ואף הצבא הוא מנת חלקה. לאור עובדת חיים זו, לא יהיה מן הנכון לעודד דווקא את חגיגת "בת־המצווה"? האם לדעת אדוני לא צריך היה לעודד את "בת־המצווה", ולהשאיר עליה רושם בל־ימחה לקראת הכניסה למצוות? ואם אמנם צריך באמת לעודד את הילדה לקראת תפקידה הנעלה, מה דמות כדאי לתת לחגיגת "בת־המצווה"?

קיבלתי מכתבך מיום י"ב באייר ש"ז, בו עוררת את השאלה אם יש לערוך חגיגת "בת־מצווה" לילדה שהגיעה לשתים עשרה שנה ויום אחד.

מצאתי כמה דברי טעם במכתבך. הסיבה שלילד עורכים מתמיד בכל קהילות ישראל חגיגת בר־מצווה, היא משום שמיום שבו נכנס לעול המצוות נוספה לו מצווה מידית והיא מצוות הנחת תפילין, בעוד אשר הילדה אמנם נכנסת לעול המצוות אולם אין עומדת בפניה מצווה מיוחדת מיידית.

אך אין זאת אומרת שאין הבת צריכה לשמוח ביום כניסתה למצוות. אדרבא ראוי ורצוי לערוך חגיגה לכבוד מאורע זה בחייה¹²⁸.

את החגיגה יש לערוך בבית, בחברת קרובים וידידים ובהשתתפות של רב. הרב ישא דברים לכבוד המאורע הזה וידבר במעלת החובה לשמור את המצוות ובשכר של מקיימיהן.
