הממשלה הנוכחית תנהיג בקרוב חוק נשואין מונוגמיים אשר תאסור נשואין פוליגמיים חוץ למוסלמים שדתם מתירה פוליגמיה, והמוסד היהודי האחראי יהיה אסיר תודה עבור עצתם בענין זה, כי הם מרגישים כי זוהי שאלה דתית הדורשת הוראה החלטית מהמוסדות המוסמכים.

בעבר, כאשר היה לנו מעמד של מושבה, הממשלה לא היתה מתערבת בחוקי הנשואין של התושבים, התושבים היהודים, אף כי לפי הדין והמנהג היהודי היה מותר להם לשאת יותר מאשה אחת, היו למעשה מונוגמיים. היו רק מקרים מספר בהם יהודי נשא אשה שניה מחוץ לביהכ"נ ע"י נשואין בטקס אחר. היו שלשה מקרים כאלה תוך עשר השנים האחרונות.
