על פיסקא זו כותב רש"י: "אם מצאום הרוגים עם מתי ישראל". והר"ן פירש את דבריו: "עם מתי ישראל", לאו דוקא, שהדין הוא כך אף אם מצאו מתי נכרים לבד "שמתעסקין בהן ובקבורתן מפני דרכי שלום".

והרמב"ם פסק בהלכות מלכים, בפרק י', הלכה י"ב: "ציוו חכמים לבקר חוליהם ולקבור מתיהם... מפני דרכי שלום. הרי נאמר טוב ה' לכל ורחמיו על כל מעשיו ונאמר דרכיה דרכי נועם וכל נתיבותיה שלום". וכן הוא דעת מרן ר"י קארו בשולחן ערוך יו"ד, סי' שס"ז, סע' א', וב"בית יוסף" בסימן זה הביא את דברי ה"כלבו" שכתב: הרואה את המת חייב לעמוד מפניו ולנהוג בו כבוד ואפילו מת נכרי חייב ללוותו 4 אמות.

אינני יודע מה היו נימוקיו של הרב אונטרמן בעת הספד חללי המטוס הי"ד ובודאי יסביר לכב' נימוקיו. אך אני מתפלא על אותו מעיר שחשב לתלות בוקי־סריקי בדת ישראל. אדרבא אנו רואים עד כמה הקפידה תורה לגמול חסד עם כל נברא, כי תורת חסד היא.
