בעייתנו היא כדלהלן: אוניברסיטה חדשה, בשם "מונש אוניברסיטה" נוסדה במלבורן לפני כמה שנים ע"י הממשלה של מדינת ויקטוריה, (Commonwelth) קהלית אוסטרליה. נמצאים בה כ 3500 סטודנטים ו 250 מהם יהודים.

עכשיו, לפני שבועיים, מועצת האוניברסיטה החליטה לבנות, בשטח האוניברסיטה, בניין "מיועד לכל האמונות, בשביל סטודנטים מכל הדתות באוניברסיטה מונש". יהיו שני בתי תפילה. אחד גדול ואחד קטן. בתי התפילה יהיו בשביל טכסים דתיים, והיעוד "בית תפילה בינדתי" יקרא שמו משום שכל האמונות השונות הנוצריות כגון רומן־קטולק, אנגליכאן, פרסביטריאן, מטודיסט וכו' הסכימו להשתתף בבתי התפילה ביחד, ולקיים הטכסים הדתיים שלהם בהם, אף על פי שהטכסים יתקיימו בזמנים שונים ולא ביחד.

בהתחלתו של מכתב זה, אני צינתי שאתה טפלת בבעיה דומה, בהזדמנות אחרת. הבעיה הדומה הזו מתוארת במאמר ב"ז'ואיש כרוניקל" של לונדון מתאריך 4.2.66, צילום רצו"ב. כפי שתוכל לראות, המאמר אומר שאתה נתת את ברכתך לבית כנסת "ברוזרהוד" שהשתמשו באותו מקדש עם הכנסיה הפרסביטרית, באיזה מקום בארה"ב.

כמובן שאנו שואלים את שאלותינו רק מנקודת מבט דתית, מפני שאנו נמנעים לעשות מה שנגד רוח דתנו הקדושה. מנקודת מבט חברתית, בכל אופן, אני רוצה לציין שהקהילה היהודית היא ביחסים טובים עם הקהילה הכללית. יש כבוד הדדי והבנה משני הצדדים, וליחס זה לא נעים לפגוע בכל דרך של השתתפותינו או אי־השתתפותינו בתוכנית של בתי התפילה הבינדתיים.

אם הבנין העומד להיבנות יכלול, בכל שטח משטחו, צלבים, פסלים, תמונות שמנהג העכו"ם לקבוע בבתי־תפילה שלהם וכיו"ב – אין להיות שותפים בהקמתו בכל צורה שהיא. בין בממון, בין בהזדהות מוסרית, בין בתעמולה וכל כיוצא בזה¹⁶⁷.

באשר לשאלה אם מותר ליהודים לקחת חלק בועדים ציבוריים, לתת תרומות כספיות וכיו"ב, הרי אם ההימנעות מליטול חלק כאמור, תצמיח איבה שיש עמה סכנה ליהודים, הדין הוא שאפשר לתת תרומות וכיו"ב לקופת האוניברסיטה עצמה ולא למען המטרה המיוחדת של הקמת הבנין הנדון, אף אם כספי התרומות הללו יעברו בסופו של דבר למטרת הקמת הבנין הזה¹⁶⁸.

אם בית־התפילה הבינדתי העומד לקום יכלול פסלים, צלבים וכיו"ב כאמור לעיל – אסור לסטודנטים יהודים להתפלל בבית־תפילה זה, גם לא בנפרד, ואסור אף לקיים בו פגישות למטרות לא דתיות.
