לפני חדשים אחדים בא אלינו הרב א.מ. פינגרהוט מפריז בשליחות אסיפת רבני צרפת והביא לפנינו את הבקשה של העברת עצמות הטמונים בברגן־בלזן לקבורה מתאימה בפריז.

מאחר שחומר העובדות שהובא לפנינו לא כלל כל ענין הנוגד את הדין וההלכה, לא מצאנו כי יש מקום להתנגד להצעה זו, וסמכנו ידינו עליה.

תוך שבועות אחדים, הפכה בעיה זו לנושא ציבורי ממדרגה ראשונה, ונתגלה שאין דעה אחידה בענין. הופיעו אצלנו משלחות שונות, ביניהן של ארגון שארית הפליטה ועוד, אשר הביעו תרעומת על אפשרות ביצועה של החלטת ממשלת צרפת. הואיל והמצב כזה ושמענו כמה טענות בעלות משקל, החלטנו הרב הראשי הרצוג ואני להקפיא, לפי שעה, את הסכמתנו בענין זה, ובאנו לכלל דעה כי לשם מתן החלטה סופית ומחייבת, עלינו לשמוע את דעותיהם של שני הצדדים זה בפני זה.

הודענו לרבני צרפת החלטתנו זו, וביקשנו מהם שישלחו נציג מוסמך שלהם – אם הם עומדים עוד על דעתם, אולם נציג כזה לא בא.

לפיכך, אף שלא חזרנו בנו מהסכמתנו העקרונית לאפשרות ההעברה, החלטתנו להקפיא את ההסכמה – בעינה עומדת.
