לאחר שבאתי בע"ה בקשרי שדוכין עם משפחת הכלה (בתשרי תשל"א), נפטרה סבתי (אם אמי) ע"ה (בכסלו), ועקב זה נדחו האירוסין לחודש שבט, ואעפ"כ נמנעה אמי שתחי' מלבוא לבית הכלה ביום האירוסין (מצערה, ומגזרת שנים עשר חודש), וזה גרם לי לצער רב, ועגמת נפש מרובה, ועתה לבי נוקפני אם נכון הדבר לדחות את מועד החתונה עד לאחר שנים עשר חודש (אעפ"י שהתכוננתי לעשותה עוד לפני פסח, ומפאת זה שוב דחיתי אותה לחודש סיון), וכל זה כי חוששני שמא אמי שתחי', וכן משפחתה (אחיה ואחיותיה), ימנעו מלבוא ביום החתונה (מפאת גזרת שנים עשר חודש), ואז במקום שמחה שתשרה, יהיה לי צער רב, והרבה עגמת נפש. לזאת יורנו מורנו, מה נעשה בדבר, האם מדינא אסור לאמי להשתתף בשמחתי, וכן למשפחתה, או שמא חומרא היא שהחמירו על עצמם, וכן כיצד עליהם להתנהג בתוך שבעת ימי המשתה, ואם חלוק הדין בשבת שבתוכם.

כב' הרב הראשי שליט"א הורני להודיעך כי ענין שנים עשר חודש הוא לענין חתונה של זרים, אך אין לנהוג בחומרה לגבי חתונת בנים. ואמך שתחיה יכולה להשתתף בחתונתך ללא פקפוק, אבל לא בשעת ריקודים וכלי־זמר אם יהיו. לפיכך, אם טרם נקבע מועד חופתך – תוכלו לקבוע אותו לפני תום שנים עשר חודש¹³².
