אֵיכָה֩ יָעִ֨יב בְּאַפּ֤וֹ׀אֲדֹנָי֙ אֶת־בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן הִשְׁלִ֤יךְ מִשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֶ֔רֶץ תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹא־זָכַ֥ר הֲדֹם־רַגְלָ֖יו בְּי֥וֹם אַפּֽוֹ׃{ס}

**The Metsudah Five Megillot, Lakewood, N.J., 2001:**
How can it be that God, in his wrath, has cast a gloom upon the city of *Tzion,* that He flung from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, and did not remember His footstool on the day of His wrath?

How has the Lord covered the daughter of Żiyyon with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven to earth the beauty of Yisra᾽el, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!

How the L-rd has beclouded in His wrath the daughter of Zion! He has cast down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel and not remembered His footstool [(the Temple)] in the day of His wrath.

בִּלַּ֨ע אֲדֹנָ֜י (לא) [וְלֹ֣א] חָמַ֗ל אֵ֚ת כׇּל־נְא֣וֹת יַעֲקֹ֔ב הָרַ֧ס בְּעֶבְרָת֛וֹ מִבְצְרֵ֥י בַת־יְהוּדָ֖ה הִגִּ֣יעַ לָאָ֑רֶץ חִלֵּ֥ל מַמְלָכָ֖ה וְשָׂרֶֽיהָ׃{ס}

God swallowed up mercilessly every residence of Ya’akov. He smashed, in His fury, the fortifications of the province of Yehudah, razing them to the ground. He desecrated the kingdom and its princes.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
The Lord has swallowed up without pity all the habitations of Ya῾aqov: he has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Yehuda; he has brought them down to the ground: he has profaned the kingdom and its princes.

The L-rd has swallowed up without pity all the habitations of Jacob. He has destroyed in His wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom [(Israel, "a kingdom of priests")] and its princes.

גָּדַ֣ע בׇּֽחֳרִי־אַ֗ף כֹּ֚ל קֶ֣רֶן יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵשִׁ֥יב אָח֛וֹר יְמִינ֖וֹ מִפְּנֵ֣י אוֹיֵ֑ב וַיִּבְעַ֤ר בְּיַעֲקֹב֙ כְּאֵ֣שׁ לֶֽהָבָ֔ה אָכְלָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃{ס}

He tore down, in his wrath, all the power [lit. horn] of Israel. He withheld His right arm in the face of the enemy. He ignited Ya’akov like a blazing flame which consumes on every side.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
He has cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Yisra᾽el: he has drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he has burned against Ya῾aqov like a flaming fire, which devours round about.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
He has cut off in burning wrath all the glory of Israel. He has drawn back His right hand [(from the defense of Israel] from before the foe; and He has burned against Jacob as a flaming fire, devouring roundabout.

דָּרַ֨ךְ קַשְׁתּ֜וֹ כְּאוֹיֵ֗ב נִצָּ֤ב יְמִינוֹ֙ כְּצָ֔ר וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֔ג כֹּ֖ל מַחֲמַדֵּי־עָ֑יִן בְּאֹ֙הֶל֙ בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן שָׁפַ֥ךְ כָּאֵ֖שׁ חֲמָתֽוֹ׃{ס}

He arched His bow like an enemy, set His right arm like an oppressor, and slew everyone that was a delight to behold. In the tent of the city of *Tzion* He poured His fury like fire.

He has bent his bow like an enemy: with his right hand set like an adversary, he has slain all that were pleasant to the eye: in the tent of the daughter of Żiyyon, he has poured out his fury like fire.

He has drawn His bow as an enemy; He has set His right hand as an oppressor, and He has slain all that delighted the eye in the tent of the daughter of Zion. He has spilled out His fire-like wrath.

God was like an enemy—He swallowed up Israel, He swallowed up all her palaces, He destroyed its fortifications. He magnified, in the community of Yehudah, suffering and lamentation.

The Lord was like an enemy: he has swallowed up Yisra᾽el, he has swallowed up all her palaces: he has destroyed his strongholds, and has increased in the daughter of Yehuda mourning and lamentation.

The L-rd has become like an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel; He has swallowed up all its palaces; He has destroyed its strongholds; and He has increased in the daughter [i.e., the congregation] of Judah affliction and wailing.

He cut down His dwelling place like a garden, He destroyed His place of communion, Adonoy caused to be forgotten in *Tzion* the Festivals and Shabbos. He scorned, in the fury of His wrath, the king and the *kohein.*

And he has stripped his tabernacle, as if it were a garden: he has destroyed his place of assembly: the Lord has caused the appointed seasons and sabbaths to be forgotten in Żiyyon, and has spurned in the indignation of his anger both king and priest.

And He has cut off His abode [(the Temple)] as [(one cuts the vegetables of)] a garden. He has destroyed His meeting place [(the holy of holies)]. The L-rd has caused to go forgotten in Zion festival and Sabbath; and He has cast out in the raging of His wrath, king [(Tzidkiyahu)] and [high-] priest [(Serayahu)].

זָנַ֨ח אֲדֹנָ֤י׀מִזְבְּחוֹ֙ נִאֵ֣ר מִקְדָּשׁ֔וֹ הִסְגִּיר֙ בְּיַד־אוֹיֵ֔ב חוֹמֹ֖ת אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ ק֛וֹל נָתְנ֥וּ בְּבֵית־יְהֹוָ֖ה כְּי֥וֹם מוֹעֵֽד׃{ס}

God abandoned His altar, nullified His Sanctuary, delivered, into the enemy’s hand, the walls of its palaces. They sounded a shout, in the House of Adonoy, like that of a festival day.

The Lord has cast off his altar, he has abhorred his sanctuary, he has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the Lord, as in the day of a solemn assembly.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
The L-rd has voided His altar; He has abolished His sanctuary. He has handed over to the enemy the walls of her palaces. A shout did they raise in the house of the L-rd as on a festival day.

חָשַׁ֨ב יְהֹוָ֤ה׀לְהַשְׁחִית֙ חוֹמַ֣ת בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן נָ֣טָה קָ֔ו לֹא־הֵשִׁ֥יב יָד֖וֹ מִבַּלֵּ֑עַ וַיַּֽאֲבֶל־חֵ֥ל וְחוֹמָ֖ה יַחְדָּ֥ו אֻמְלָֽלוּ׃{ס}

Adonoy determined to destroy the wall of the city of *Tzion.* He set the course [of judgement], and did not withdraw His hand from destroying. He caused the fence and the wall to mourn they were joined in misery.

The Lord has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Żiyyon: he has stretched out a line, he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languish together.

The L-rd had [long] thought to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He stretched out a line [(of judgment)]; He did not draw back His hand from swallowing up. And He cast into mourning rampart and wall; together did they languish.


###### Lamentations 2:9

טָבְע֤וּ בָאָ֙רֶץ֙ שְׁעָרֶ֔יהָ אִבַּ֥ד וְשִׁבַּ֖ר בְּרִיחֶ֑יהָ מַלְכָּ֨הּ וְשָׂרֶ֤יהָ בַגּוֹיִם֙ אֵ֣ין תּוֹרָ֔ה גַּם־נְבִיאֶ֕יהָ לֹא־מָצְא֥וּ חָז֖וֹן מֵיְהֹוָֽה׃{ס}

Her gates sank into the ground, He demolished and shattered her bolts. Her king and nobles are among the Gentiles, without guidance. Her prophets, also, have not found vision from Adonoy.

Her gates are sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the nations: there is no Tora; her prophets also find no vision from the Lord.

Her gates are sunk in the ground. He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her kings and her princes [are] among the nations devoid of instruction. Her prophets, too, have not found a vision from the L-rd.


###### Lamentations 2:10

They sit silently on the ground, the elders of the city of *Tzion,* they lift the dust to their heads, gird themselves with sackcloth. they lower their heads to the ground, the maidens of Jerusalem.

The elders of the daughter of Żiyyon sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Yerushalayim hang down their heads to the ground.

They have sat upon the ground; they have been silent, the elders of the daughters of Zion. They have cast dust upon their heads; they have donned sackcloth. They bent their heads to the ground, the virgins of Jerusalem.

My eyes are consumed with tears, my gut is shrivelled, my liver has spilled to the ground, over the disintegration of my people, when infants and nursing babies faint in the streets of the city.

My eyes fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the breach of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the broad places of the city.

My eyes have failed with tears; my innards have shriveled up; my liver is poured upon the ground over the breaking of the daughter of my people, over the languishing of child and suckling in the streets of the city.

To their mothers they say, ‘Where’s grain [bread] and wine?’, as they lie, passed out like corpses, in the streets of the city, when their soul is poured out in their mothers’ laps.

They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swoon like wounded men in the broad places of the city, when their soul is poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

To their mothers they say: Where is corn and wine, expiring as a slain one in the streets of the city, spilling out their souls at their mothers' bosom.

Your prophets envisioned, for you, falsehood and stupidity, and did not expose your transgressions, to bring you back from your waywardness. They envisioned, for you, prophecies of falsehood and deception.

Thy prophets have seen for thee vain and foolish visions: and they have not exposed thy iniquity, to restore thy captivity; but have prophesied for thee burdens of falsehood and deceit.

Your prophets prophesied for you vanity and folly, and they did not expose [and chastise you for] your iniquity to turn back your backsliding. And they prophesied for you burdens of vanity and recalcitrance [(against the L-rd)].

They clap their hands over you—all those who travel along the way; they hiss and shake their heads over the city of Jerusalem. Is this the city of which it was said, “The perfection of beauty, delight of all the earth?”

All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Yerushalayim, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

All the wayfarers clapped their hands over you. They whistled [in astonishment] and shook their heads over the daughter of Jerusalem: Is this the city of which it was said: "the sum of beauty, the joy of all the earth"?

They opened their mouths wide concerning you—all your enemies—they whistled, gnashed their teeth, and exclaimed, “We swallowed them up? This is precisely the day we hoped for! We’ve experienced it! We’ve seen it!”

All thy enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we have looked for; we have found it, we have seen it.

God acted as planned. He fulfilled His word as decreed in the days of old—He destroyed without pity He gave joy to the enemy concerning you, and enhanced the power of your oppressors.

The Lord has done that which he devised; he has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old: he has thrown down without pity: and he has caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, he has raised up the horn of thy adversaries.

The L-rd has wrought what He devised. He consummated His word which He pronounced in days of yore [viz. Leviticus 26:18]. He has destroyed and not pitied. And He has caused the foe to rejoice over you; He has lifted the horn of your oppressors.

Their hearts cried out to God. O Rampart of the city of *Tzion,* pour forth a river of tears day and night. Allow yourself no respite, nor the pupil of your eye silence.

Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Żiyyon, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thy eye cease.
