חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה אָקוּם לְהוֹדוֹת לָךְ עַל מִשְׁפְּטֵי צִדְקֶךָ (תהילים קי״ט:ס״ב):

חֲצוֹת הוּא מְסֻגָּל כְּמוֹ פִּדְיוֹן, כִּי הוּא הַמְתָּקַת הַדִּינִים. כִּי צֶדֶק – דִּינָא, וּמִשְׁפָּט – רַחֲמֵי.

C*hatzot* is as effective as a redemption, for it mitigates the judgments. This is because “just” is judgment, and “laws” is mercy.

This is the meaning of: **for Your just laws—**That is, [when] justice suppresses law, the way to correct this is: **At chatzot of night I awake** .

וְעִקַּר חֲצוֹת הוּא תָּמִיד אַחַר שִׁשָּׁה שָׁעוֹת מִתְּחִלַּת הַלַּיְלָה, הֵן בַּקַּיִץ וְהֵן בַּחֹרֶף, וְאָז מַתְחִיל זְמַן חֲצוֹת. וְנִמְשָׁךְ עַד גְּמַר אַשְׁמוּרָה שְׁנִיָּה, דְּהַיְנוּ שְׁתֵּי שָׁעוֹת:

And the main time for *Chatzot* is always six hours from nightfall, whether in summer or winter. The time of *Chatzot* begins then, and continues until the end of the second watch—i.e., for two hours.
