דִּבֵּר עִם אֶחָד וְאָמַר לוֹ, שֶׁעִקָּר אֲמִירַת תְּהִלִּים לוֹמַר כָּל מִזְמוֹרֵי תְּהִלִּים עַל עַצְמוֹ, לִמְצֹא אֶת עַצְמוֹ בְּתוֹךְ כָּל מִזְמוֹר וּמִזְמוֹר. וְשָׁאַל אוֹתוֹ זַ"ל: אֵיךְ, וּפֵרֵשׁ לוֹ רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל קְצָת, כִּי כָל הַמִּלְחָמוֹת שֶׁבִּקֵּשׁ דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ, עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם, שֶׁיַּצִּילֵהוּ הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ מֵהֶם – הַכֹּל צְרִיכִין לְפָרֵשׁ לְעַצְמוֹ עַל מִלְחֶמֶת הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע וְחֵילוֹתָיו, וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּזֶה בִּשְׁאָר הַמִּזְמוֹרִים (וְכַמְבֹאָר מִזֶּה לְעֵיל בְּסִימָן קא).

Rebbe Nachman told a person with whom he spoke that the main thing in reciting *Tehillim* is to say all the psalms as referring to oneself, finding oneself in each and every chapter. The man asked the Rebbe, of blessed memory, how one does this, and the Rebbe briefly explained: All the battles from which King David, may peace be upon him, entreated God to save him—a person has to apply them all to himself, as referring to the battle against the evil inclination and its forces. Likewise, with the other chapters (as explicated above, in Lesson #101).

וְשָׁאַל אוֹתוֹ: אֵיךְ יְפָרֵשׁ לְעַצְמוֹ מֵהַפְּסוּקִים, שֶׁדָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם מְשַׁבֵּחַ אֶת עַצְמוֹ, כְּגוֹן: שָׁמְרָה נַפְשִׁי כִּי חָסִיד אָנִי (תהלים פו), וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּזֶה. הֵשִׁיב לוֹ: גַּם זֶה צְרִיכִין לְפָרֵשׁ עַל עַצְמוֹ, כִּי צְרִיכִין לָדוּן אֶת עַצְמוֹ לְכַף זְכוּת, וְלִמְצֹא בְּעַצְמוֹ אֵיזֶה זְכוּת וּנְקֻדָּה טוֹבָה, אֲשֶׁר בִּבְחִינַת הַנְּקֻדָּה טוֹבָה הַזֹּאת הוּא בְּחִינַת חָסִיד, וְכַיּוֹצֵא.

And the man asked him how it was possible to apply to himself those verses in which King David, may peace be upon him, praises himself, for example: “Guard my soul, for I am devout” (Psalms 86:2), and similar such statements. The Rebbe answered him: This, too, one must apply to himself, because a person has to judge himself favorably. He has to find in himself some merit and good point, that in this good point he is considered devout and the like.

וְאָמַר לוֹ רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל: הֲלֹא אֵצֶל יְהוֹשָׁפָט כְּתִיב (ד"ה־ב יז): וַיִּגְבַּהּ לִבּוֹ בְּדַרְכֵי ה', שֶׁבְּדַרְכֵי ה' וַעֲבוֹדָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ הִגְבִּיהַּ לִבּוֹ קְצָת.

The Rebbe, of blessed memory, also said to him: Is it not written of Yehoshaphat that “His heart was elevated in the ways of God” (2 Chronicles 17:6)—that he prided himself a bit in the ways of God and in serving Him?

עוֹד אָמַר לוֹ רַבֵּנוּ זַ"ל: הֲלֹא בַּבֹּקֶר אָנוּ אוֹמְרִים בַּתְּחִלָּה: מָה אָנוּ מֶה חַיֵּינוּ וְכוּ', וְאָנוּ מַקְטִינִים עַצְמֵנוּ מְאֹד, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ אָנוּ אוֹמְרִים: אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ עַמְּךָ בְּנֵי בְרִיתֶךָ וְכוּ', שֶׁאַחַר־כָּךְ אָנוּ מְחַזְּקִים עַצְמֵנוּ וּמְרִימִים אֶת עַצְמֵנוּ, וְאָנוּ מְסַפְּרִים אֶת גְּדֻלָּתֵנוּ, וּמִתְפָּאֲרִים שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ עַמּוֹ בְּנֵי בְרִיתוֹ זֶרַע אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב וְכוּ', כִּי כָּךְ צְרִיכִין לְהִתְנַהֵג בַּעֲבוֹדַת הַשֵּׁם כַּנַּ"ל.

The Rebbe, of blessed memory, further said to him: Do we not say at the start of the morning: “What are we? What is our life?…” We belittle ourselves a great deal, but then say: “Nevertheless, we are Your people, members of Your Covenant…” That is, afterwards we encourage and boost ourselves, and speak of our greatness. And we pride ourselves in being His people, members of His Covenant, the offspring of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov…. This is how we need to conduct ourselves in the service of God.
