**Sefaria Community Translation:**
My children, come and I will teach you about the virtue of **shame (bushah)**. Know, my children, that the quality of modest shame is an exceedingly important virtue. Anyone who possesses a sense of shame is saved from sins and transgressions. As it is written: *"Moses answered the people, “Be not afraid; for God has come only in order to test you, and in order that the fear of God may be ever with you, so that you do not go astray."* (Shemot 20:17). Our Sages said: *“ that the fear of God may be ever with you”*, this refers to **shame**. *“So that you do not go astray”*, this teaches that **shame leads a person to fear of sin**. From here they said: **A good sign for a person is that he is bashful.** And one wise man said: **A sign of worthy children is the modest shame that appears upon their faces.*

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And this virtue is found only among the pious and those who fear sin, as our Sages said: “Anyone who feels shame does not quickly come to sin.” And whoever has no sense of shame, it is known that his ancestors did not stand at Mount Sinai.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
My children, come and see how great the virtue of shame is before the Omnipresent. Even if a person has committed many transgressions, if he feels ashamed of them and does not repeat them, the Holy One, blessed be He, forgives him for all his sins, as it is said: “Thus you shall remember and feel shame, and you shall be too abashed to open your mouth again, when I have forgiven you for all that you did, declares the Sovereign GOD.” (Yechezkel 16:63). We also find this with King Shaul. When Shmuel was brought up through the woman with the familiar spirit, he said to Saul: “Why have you disturbed me to bring me up?” Shaul replied: “I am greatly distressed; the Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me and no longer answers me, neither through the prophets nor through dreams, so I have called you to tell me what I should do.” However, Shaul was ashamed to mention the Urim and Tumim because he had killed the priests of Nov, and the Holy One, blessed be He, forgave him, as it is said: “Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me,” meaning with me in my portion. Our Sages said that anyone who commits a sin and then regrets it is forgiven immediately, as it is written: “And I will draw near to you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the adulterers, the sorcerers, those who swear falsely, those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow, the orphan, and those who turn aside the stranger and do not fear Me,” implying that if they do fear Me they are forgiven. And so it says: “He who confesses and abandons his sins will obtain mercy.” One wise man said: Be careful with the trait of shame, for shame is visible upon the face of a noble person. Another said: He whom the Creator clothes with the cloak of shame, his faults will be hidden from people.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Great is the trait of shame, for through it a person merits good deeds, and not only that, but he also merits the Garden of Eden, as our Sages said: the brazen-faced are destined for Gehinnom, and the bashful for the Garden of Eden. One wise man said that shame and faith cling together; when one departs, the other departs as well. What is shame? It is that a person should feel ashamed of himself and of his deeds when he is alone with himself, and he should also feel ashamed before other people. He should be modest in all his ways and in all his matters, examining them carefully so that no blemish or disgraceful thing will arise in them, so that if others see or hear of them he will not be put to shame. He should reflect at the beginning of a matter before doing it, so that he will strive to act in a way that will not bring him to shame. He should be modest in eating and drinking so that he will not become disgraceful, degraded, or ashamed before others. He should distance himself from ugliness and from anything similar to it. In summary, he should feel shame before the Creator, and then the virtue of the trait of shame will be complete within him, as one wise man said: when you do something inside your house, be ashamed before the members of your household; when you do something in the marketplace, be ashamed before people; if not, then be ashamed before yourself; and if you are not ashamed before yourself, then be ashamed before your soul; and if you are not ashamed before your soul, then be ashamed before the Creator who sees you.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
My children, be careful with the trait of shame, for when a person is ashamed before people he becomes careful to avoid disgraceful and ugly things and does not stumble in them. All the more so if he is ashamed before the Creator, he will not stumble in sin and transgression. Anyone who has no sense of shame has already come to regard the Torah as something permitted in his eyes, as one wise man said: the final teaching we received from the words of prophecy is that when you are not ashamed, you will do whatever you wish. It is also said that suspicion will not reach the bashful person just as the sound of theft and robbery will not reach the trustworthy one. They asked a wise man, “What is shame?” He answered, “Intellect.” They said to him, “And what is intellect?” He answered, “Shame.” Another said: shame is the path to long life. And another said: the life of a person is sustained first by faith and fear of God for many days, and afterwards his life continues through the traits of shame, humility, and lowliness.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
My children, be careful not to shame your fellow, even when you are alone with him, and all the more so not to shame him in public, for it is one of the most serious transgressions in the Torah. Our Sages said: anyone who whitens the face of his fellow in public is as if he has shed blood, for we see that the redness leaves his face and paleness comes. They also said that anyone who shames his fellow will in the end be shamed himself. Not only that, but the ministering angels push him away and display his disgrace before all who come into the world. They further said that all who descend to Gehinnom descend and later rise again, except for three who descend and do not rise: one who has relations with a married woman, one who gives his fellow a degrading nickname, and one who shames his fellow in public. Know that because they shamed Bar Kamtza in public, the Holy One, blessed be He, allowed the destruction of the Temple.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Even though I have warned you about the virtue of shame, I also warn you that if you have made a mistake in any matter, do not be ashamed to return and admit the truth. For anyone who is ashamed to return and acknowledge the truth is certainly called brazen-faced. And if you have sinned, whether unintentionally or intentionally, in any matter of the Torah and its commandments, do not be ashamed to confess it before the Creator. Likewise, when you are in doubt about something from the words of the Torah, or from the received tradition, or about any commandment, do not be ashamed to ask about it, even from someone lesser than you in rank or in years. Do not be ashamed to say about something you do not know, “We do not know.” And about something you have not heard, say, “We have not heard.” Or if you heard it but do not remember, say, “We heard it but we forgot.” For even Moses our teacher, peace be upon him, admitted and was not ashamed to say, “I have not heard,” as it is said: “And Moses heard, and it was good in his eyes.” Our Sages said: the bashful person does not learn, and the impatient person does not teach. And it was taught in the school of Elijah: a person should ask about a verse even if everyone laughs at him, and about a halachah even if everyone laughs at him. A person should bring himself into the body of the Torah even if he is not proficient in halachah at all, as it is said: “If you have acted foolishly in exalting yourself, or if you have planned evil, put your hand over your mouth.” Likewise, do not be ashamed to warn a person and guide him in a good path, for refraining from doing so is not the way of people who are complete in their character traits, and that kind of shame is worse than brazenness. Therefore, my children, be careful with the trait of shame, so that the fear of God will always be upon your faces and you will not sin. And may our God, in His mercy, grant us success in it.

My children, know that the trait of brazenness is a quality greatly despised in the eyes of the Omnipresent, because it is like a branch of idolatry. Not only that, but because of brazen people the heavens are restrained from sending dew and rain, as it is said: “Therefore the showers have been withheld, and the latter rain has not come; yet you had the forehead of a harlot, you refused to be ashamed.” (Yirmiahu 3:3). Our Sages also said that Jerusalem was destroyed only because they had no sense of shame toward one another, as it is said: “Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not ashamed at all, nor did they know how to blush.” (Yirmiahu 6:15). This disgraceful trait is not found among the pious and people of good deeds, but rather among the wicked, as it is said about them: “They have made their faces harder than rock.” (Yirmiahu 5:3). Our Sages further said that anyone who possesses brazenness may be called a wicked person to his face, as it is said: “A wicked man hardens his face.” (Mishlei 21:29). Anyone who has brazenness will in the end fall and be broken. And it was taught in the school of Elijah that the intimidating, the arrogant boasters, the brazen-faced, and the strong-armed, about them the verse says: “For the arms of the wicked shall be broken.”

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
My children, come and see how severe the trait of brazenness is, for once a person has brazenness he comes to wickedness, as it is said: “A wicked man hardens his face.” Not only that, but anyone who has brazenness is known to have stumbled in sin, as it is said: “You had the forehead of a harlot.” It does not say “you will have,” but “you had already.” Our Sages said in the Aggadah that four are called wicked: one who raises his hand against his fellow to strike him, even if he did not strike him, is called wicked, as it is said: “And he said to the wicked one, ‘Why will you strike your fellow?’” It does not say “why did you strike,” but “why will you strike.” One who borrows and does not repay, as it is said: “The wicked borrows and does not repay.” One who has brazenness, as it is said: “A wicked man hardens his face.” And one who is a man of dispute, as it is said: “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men.” Both of these traits were found in Dathan and Abiram, brazenness and dispute. There is no brazen person who does not have some flaw in his lineage, as our Sages said: a brazen person, Rabbi Eliezer says he is a mamzer; Rabbi Yehoshua says he is the son of a woman in a state of niddah; Rabbi Akiva says he is both a mamzer and the son of a niddah. What is brazenness? One who commits a sin in front of other people and is not ashamed is called brazen-faced. One who commits a sin and repeats it, and walks with an upright posture and a brazen forehead without shame, is like an idol worshipper, as it is said: “They were ashamed because they committed abomination, yet they were not ashamed.” The end of brazenness is dispute, and after dispute comes regret. It is also said that brazenness is a great sickness, and its cure is found in a person equally bold in opposing it.

However, to stand with boldness against the wicked and those who abandon the Torah in order to discipline them and rebuke them is very good, as it is said: “Behold, I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a wall of bronze.” For this reason Solomon commanded and said: “Answer a fool according to his folly.” Therefore, my children, be careful of this disgraceful trait and distance it from yourselves, and do not make use of it so that it will not overcome you, for anyone who possesses this disgraceful trait will find that people distance themselves from him and turn away from him. May God save us from disgraceful and base traits and raise us to the highest virtues through His mercy and abundant kindness. Amen.
