ומה שאמרו שריבוי אחר ריבוי בא למעט ומיעוט אחר מיעוט בא לרבות הוא מיוסד בחכמת ההגיון, ויש בזה כמה כללים. אולם כל המקומות שמצאתי כלל זה בספרא בנוים על יסוד אחד, והוא הנודע בהגיון ששני שמות הבאים זה אחרי זה, השם השני מגביל את הראשון, ואם היקף שם השני כולל יותר מן הראשון בא לרבות; ובהפך בא למעט (כמו שכתבנו ויקרא ס' לח בהבדל בין "בני אהרן הכהנים" ובין "הכהנים בני אהרן").

And when the sages say that an amplificatory expression after an amplificatory expression comes to restrict and a restrictive expression after a restrictive expression comes to amplify, this is founded upon the wisdom of logic, and there are in this several rules. However, all of the places where I found this rule in *Sifra* are based upon one foundation - it is known in logic that whenever two nouns come one after the other, the second noun restricts the first, and if the scope of the second noun includes more than the first, it comes to amplify; and whenever the order is reversed, it comes to restrict (as when we wrote in Rule 266 about the difference between בני אהרן הכהנים (Aaron’s sons, the priests) and הכהנים בני אהרן (the priests, Aaron’s sons)).
