וקדמוני הלשון קראו לבנין **פֻּעַל והָפְעַל** "בנינים שלא נזכר שם פועלם" מפני שבנינים אלה לא יציינו לעולם פעולת פועל, רק הפעולה לבדה, מבלי השקף על הפועל. וכן דעת חז"ל. (ויקרא רסג)

And the ancient linguists called the conjugations **פֻּעַל** and **הָפְעַל**
"בנינים שלא נזכר שם פועלם" (conjugations in which the subject is not mentioned), because these conjugations do not always indicate the subject, only the action alone, without focusing on the subject. And moreover, this is the understanding of the sages of blessed memory.

*Linguists today call* **פֻּעַל** *conjugation “passive voice intensive”, while they call* **הָפְעַל** *conjugation “passive voice causative”.*
